Schools: JHU vs Brown
Intended major: Mechanical Engineering
Similarities: Already like both schools vibes and environment, school size is good for me,
JHU
School 1 Pros:
⦁ Cheaper by about $3k by college board's estimations
⦁ Couple friends already there, can help me ease into college
⦁ Higher chance to get in (my school has a very good history with JHU where at least 1 person gets in each year)
⦁ Get decision earlier so I don't have to stress about it.
⦁ Better known for my major
⦁ Probably better engineering programs than Brown
⦁ Heard dorms are decent
⦁ More strict on the course
⦁ More academically rigorous than Brown? (not completely sure on this)
School 1 Cons:
⦁ Kinda dangerous outside of JHU
⦁ Compared to Brown, much stricter on music practice room entry policies (open 12/7 during academic years)
⦁ Heard food isn't the best here either
Brown
School 2 Pros:
⦁ I rank this school as my #1 choice and JHU as #2
⦁ I love the Open Curriculum
⦁ I genuinely prefer this environment a bit more. Seems warm and welcoming to me.
⦁ Has research that I'm interested in
⦁ Pretty good Engineering programs in my opinion
⦁ Has very accessible music practice rooms (almost 24/7 during academic years)
⦁ City outside of campus is much safer
⦁ Allows me to explore topics outside of my major much more freely
⦁ I love the campus
School 2 Cons:
⦁ Harder to get in when considering my schools history
According to my college counselor at school, only 1 person got in in the history of the school (at least a few decades). And apparently there were even 2 Brown legacies who didn't make it either.
⦁ Apparently terrible food
⦁ A bit more expensive
⦁ Heard dorms aren't the best
Tiebreaking considerations:
Student life, research and academic opportunities, accessibility to music practice rooms, dorm quality, safety inside and outside campus
JHU seems like a safer option
Seems like you have to decide if it’s worth the risk
If you like taking a bigger risk if it means getting a bigger award, RD both
Or, if you’re more into smaller risk smaller reward, RD to Brown and ED2 to JHU
Remember, JHU is by no means a small reward, just smaller
hypothetically if u got into both schools and jhu was 3k cheaper, if u would choose brown dont ed2 jhu, if u would choose jhu do ed2
I would do JHU. Personally, this may sound a bit outlandish, but I think Hopkins is more prestigious than brown. I had never heard of brown until last year. Granted I’m from Maryland, so I’ve know Hopkins my whole life, however I think any prestigious Ivy League school should be something I have known of prior. I knew all of the ivies besides brown most of my life. That could just be me though.
At least based on what I’m reading, I think you’re more interested in brown because of its acceptance rate being lower. I understand that, but I think Hopkins is overall a better, more prestigious school.
Interesting take. I actually agree with you on JHU being more prestigious than brown. Similarly, I knew about JHU for a decent chunk of my life because my uncle went there. But to me, the level of prestige doesn't really matter when both are t20s. They are both great schools and I love them both, but the reason why I'm more interested in brown isnt because of the acceptance rate being lower, but rather most of the pros I listed earlier.
I appreciate your response, but when it's between JHU and Brown, I'm not really taking the prestigiousness of both schools into consideration while deciding my application status between the 2 schools.
