Hello guys, I am currently deciding where to commit. I am really confused between the University of Richmond and the University of Rochester. I'd be grateful if you could give some suggestions on where to commit.

Intended Major: Physics if Richmond; Physics or Mechanical Engineering if Rochester; I feel that I am more inclined towards Engineering than Physics.

Richmond (I was selected as a Richmond Scholar):-
Pros
:- financial aid better; don't need to pay money to university's direct costs; and will receive $1,100 annually from university towards my personal expenses or books (GPA 3 required to retain scholarship)

:- as a U of Richmond student, at least $5000 guaranteed for summer research or internships... it's also possible that i can get this $5000 two or three times.. one time is guaranteed

:- as a richmond scholar, additional $4000 guaranteed for the same

:- priority in most things from housing to class registrations, almost everything...

:- Special Attention/support/care from college

:- Study Abroad upto 1 year in Oxford, Cambridge, or Edinburgh

:- Research opportunities maybe available from freshman year; But less research areas; Is there any kind of bias against research in LACs?

Cons

• Liberal Arts College; no engineering; will have to take general education requirements (i hate this)

• Scholarship doesn't cover winter/summer break living expenses; will have to manage it by on-campus employment

• too small Physics community (only 8-9 majors per year) .. there's not much science presence/community in richmond... most science majors are on pre-med track

:- maybe there won't be a challenging environment.. I heard from current Richmond Scholars that Richmond Scholars are the only ones speaking up in most classes in U of Richmond. so it's likely that i won't be surrounded by people better than me outside the Richmond Scholars community.

University of Rochester
pros:-
R-1 national research university; better research going on; some of the research centers are the best in the world; excellent research opportunities available for juniors and seniors but not much for freshman and sophomores

More research areas

can take graduate level courses; more courses available; courses advanced than at Richmond

it has engineering + open curriculum (so no general education requirements)

Challenging environment; will be surrounded by people better than me

larger physics community (30-35 majors per year) or mech engineering (50-60 majors); has a separate library for Physics, Astronomy, and Optics

will get a refund of $826 in first year which can be used towards books and personal expenses

Cons

• will have to pay ≥$850 to university for direct costs from second year as well as cover my indirect costs by myself... (Rochester expects first year students to save some portion of their income from on-campus employment to pay for their second year's cost)

• no aid for winter/summer break living expenses; will have to manage it by on-campus employment

• 0 guaranteed funding for research or sth. but in richmond, $9,000 is guaranteed

yes and not that common but duable

it’s p easy to maintain high gpa here

i maintained a 3.9 first semes with 10ish hours in clubs every week

and could’ve gotten 4.0

i like the size and also i’m kinda a hippie

i visited uvm last week for te first time and i was like damn. deciding just got a lot harder

i applied to lasp too so i’m waiting on that and that would help their cause

also they gave me their top oos merit scholarship 👀

this is why i always tell the juniors PICK GOOD SAFETIES because you can get hella scholarships

i’m going to a ur admitted students thing next weekend which is also around when i’ll hear back if i got into lasp so then i’ll get to decide

i live like a 5 hour drive from rochester and 10 from vermont which kinda sucks and i can’t fly direct to burlington

but that doesn’t really matter

if i get into a lasp thing i want i’d probably choose uvm with the cost and everything

my parents are always like cost doesn’t matter we’re paying but at the same time i’d rather have the option to have my grad school paid for jf i want it 👀

i also lowkey like the city of burlington a lot better than the city of rochester

weather is a big thing though i hate the cold and rochester is moderately less cold

same here I got a full tuition scholarship at a state school and it's basically free for the first year compared to ur's cost that will increase after the first year and I may not get the same aid which will significantly increase costs... ur is such an amazing school and my dream school but idk how I'm gonna afford it so I may just have to not go for undergrad 😔

Also!! This reminded me that if you don’t have enough aid from Rochester get one of your parents to call them and negotiate. I did that and they gave me more money
