Mathematica is the most diverse, but python to a huge extent works out for me

R is easy to grasp in terms of syntax so if you want to learn something quick, R is useful

If you are doing numerical computation(which I assume, given you are referring to optimizing exhaust nozzles), I would recommend Matlab. But, if you are doing more symbolic computation, perhaps look into Maple(it worked well when I used it for differential geometry and some topology simulations). Of course, Mathematica or python(with necessary packages) could be options, but others have already mentioned them.

Matlab is free if you are registered for the MathWorks math modeling challenge or have an email address at a supported institution(college). I got the complete suite of products with an academic license for free using my community college email address(which you can often get without having to even take/pay for a class).

They read a lot of the mid tier possible acceptances afaik, (WARNING: PERSONAL SPECULATION) so it's mostly just providing context on people who have done research to determine if it's actual research or just "research". Basically, admissions checks to see if the profile is legit, and if some research or scientific thing would tip you over to admitted, they bring in some faculty readers to verify this

It's not like faculty are doing the grunt work of checking that your grades are good

i kinda feel like i cheated myself out of achieving more because none of the guidance in my life was ever really beneficial in regards to helping me find opportunities

The reasons that I have for wishing to go to Caltech are several. I feel that Caltech can give me a better background and a better STEM education than any other university.
I have always wanted to go there, as I have felt that it is not just another college, but is a university with something definite to offer. Then too, I would like to go to the same college as my father.
To be a "Caltech man" is an enviable distinction, and one that I sincerely hope I shall attain.

I also had physics research + LOR from that(but no published papers at that time), and other ECs(like robotics team lead and math club president)

Nah, you need to do well on the admission test in order to get the interview, oxbridge interviews are 90% math problems not like US colleges where they ask you about your hobbies and passions. You are there to solve problems and they wanna see if their way of teaching matches you. (some students with like 89-90% on the test get rejected after the interview)
