the answer is: yes. my travel expenses in the CoA are $600 (intl, from UK) and are covered as they're unbilled costs factored into the cost of financial aid. realistically, though, i spend more than $600 on travel.

however, this is where it gets odd. if you re an international, yale gives you a $1500 "vacation allowance" to support housing, meals etc. during off-term times, but realistically - most people will use this for travel. and so, i guess yeah, it works out to be $2100 of non-term funding which i mostly spend on travel.

yale also covers tax liabilities for internationals - non-tuition scholarships for internationals are taxable, though it depends on what country you are from. it's not exactly logical either - they're taxable for people from the UK, but people from Malta get $9k in untaxed scholarships. The 14% withholding rate most universities - including ivies/MIT/etc - expect you to pay is covered by Yale, which is nice.
