The boston schools (BU/Northeastern/Tufts/BC) are waitlisting most applicants that are more likely to get into T10 schools, while NYU is flat out rejecting them. Waitlist mainly means either A. You'll get into a different T20 but they don't know or B. You're slightly below their range of accepted students but have shown that NYU is your top choice

This is how I saw it phrased differently for NYU: If you have credentials that are far below (NYU is a hard reach) = rejection

OR

Below the range but demonstrate very clear interest (NYU is top choice) = waitlist

Credentials that fit their range = acceptance

Credentials above the range = waitlist

Credentials far above (T10 worthy) = rejection/waitlist

I spoke with a family friend who's an AO for BU and they confidently said that this is what colleges are doing this year since so many students are applying to so many schools.
