This is fewer than the 33,796 who applied last year, before we reinstated our testing requirement, but more than the 20,075 who applied for entry to the MIT Class of 2024, which was the last class selected before we suspended our requirement for the first two years of the pandemic. Ever since our application opened last August, our dedicated team has carefully considered them all, subject to our standard of attentive, empathetic, holistic review.

Of those 26,914 applicants, we have offered admission to 1,259 students (this is the fewest students we have ever admitted, due primarily to our significantly increased yield in recent years, while our target class size has remained the same, 1,100) who will have the opportunity to climb the mountain that is MIT. They hail from all 50 states, 63 countries, and nearly 900 different high schools. Though they all do different things — linguistics and lacrosse, cartography and Catan, topology and tango — they are united by a shared standard of rigorous academics, high character, and a strong match with MIT’s mission to use science, technology, and the useful arts to make the world a better place. yeah and honestly i think this is a case where the holistic in holistic admissions really shines through. im low income and go to a really non competitive public school where most people never bother applying to t20s. its not considered bad but theres def a lack of ambition in the culture around here. my and one other person my grade got in but we were the only ones to actually apply (we also had very similar ecs - like same speech catagory, math contests - and same classes, demographics (as in not white), and even lors from the same 2 teachers. we joked mit accepted 2 of the same person). only other person from our school who got into mit was sometime in the early 2000s. my counselor def wrote about how i continually pushed them to give me the aps and opportunities they had and how i was a lot more active in my academic decisions than the majority of other students
also my mit essays were probably the best out of all my apps

i also edited the essays of the other person in my grade who got it.

i think the individual matters a lot more than the culture in this case. again im a hs senior so take everything i say with a grain of salt but my general impression was that mit seemed more interested in the academic side of "what can you accomplish" compareed to pther t20s who might put a bit more weight on your potential social/leadership impact and history. my interviewer went into detail about the academic opportunities he had at mit and how everyone had their unique goals about what they wanted to invent or discover or create. all my other interviewers were like "yeah its a great school people are friendly theyll help you"

I would definitely agree with you. Compared to Stanford, MIT certainly focuses heavily on academics. My Stanford interviewer was much more interested in my initiatives than MIT’s. If you have certain academic achievements and want to heavily focus on academics and research opportunities, MIT would be your best-fit. On the other hand, Stanford has entrepreneurial scene. It has lots to do with what your present in your application.
