Well Caltech is smaller and you have more opportunities specially in research, also california is bussin so it's not so far fetched. If you are really looking for a career as a scientist and doing research for the rest of your life and perhaps move to the Institute for advanced study after your PhD, I dont see why you wouldnt choose Caltech over MIT. It feels like Caltech is more focused on pure academia but MIT is more fun and practical.
