#Williams College (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
Yeah
do they give merch at previews
they give a williams shirt
oh i think i saw that in the preview form
But also easier to just buy merch around Williams campus rather than getting it shipped
gotcha
wait does it come for international students
could u dm me the groupme link too?
Yep yep go for it!!
During previews i believe they will come and pick u up from albany airport, atleast thats that they did for me
You can view it yeah, the weird thing is tho that the information that people have on theirs changes from person to person
Like one of my friends had acronyms on hers describing her and another had nothing
For me and other transfer students they send out a note saying why we got in
wait can international students attend previews?
I am extremely interested in that, the only issue I had was like missing an year of your stay at williams? is it difficult like integrating into a new college environment and stuff?
Im not to sure on whether they have the same programming for international students but i definetly know you can come to previews!
Its pretty easy to come back, most people study abroad their junior regardless so integrating back is not a concern for the most part
Also feel free to dm if you have any specific questions regarding the WEPO program, my one thing I will mention is that you shouldnt come to williams just for the program however. This year was super competitive and i know someone who was super disspointed about no gettinf it because it was a major reason for them to go to williams in the first place
hey do any of you know current williams students that are from alaska
and if so is it possible for one of you to connect me?
If it makes anyone on the waitlist feel better I can’t go bc of cost so hopefully you will get my spot 💪
twolf asks: which?
1⃣: reed
2⃣: grinnell
hey bestie
exactly
I’m going to try and appeal the financial aid but it probably still won’t be enough
💔
Looks like Harvard tbh
deluding myself
yesterday around this time my heart was in pieces </33
i don’t think so at all, it’s all about what you want out of your college experience
they feed you, house you, and i’m fine with being on campus most of the time
yeah I agree with you on that
i think spring street is charming kinda norman rockwell vibe
I just don't think spring street or transportation is a strength
yeah my dads worried about that
he said the programs at Williams sound intriguing but the town is so small and it’s hard to get to
especially since I’m from Alaska lol
i also have hopkins so I’m trying to consider that
@carmine anvil do you know anyone at Williams from Alaska ?
I do but I don't know them well
what would be the best way for me to connect?
Sorry I have no idea of their contact
If you are on fin aid the school should pay for flights I thought
im full pay
That's fair
like i have to go on a ton of flights then drive 😭
For breaks Williams has motorcoach buses to Boston, New York or Albany and then you would have to fly from there probably
congrats on amherst btw i'm so happy for you
thank you!
is that an elliott smith reference in bio
tysm!!
my dad
anthony fantanocore
is amherst your top choice for now
yep
has to be because it's the only acceptance i have 😭
it's not like have options
W option to have though
i have my state schools+williams
lucky you have a great state school
gatech right?
im international so the only colleges ive applied to are t20s
amherst will likely be my only acceptance
yes!! oh extra congrats then!! intl admissions are rough
yeah 😭 got rejected from all but one of the WASP lacs
outright rejected from the other 3
crazy
what do you want to study?
cool=) environmental studies/environmental engineering for me
depending on the school
slayy
i'm not super sure yet, need to figure out if engineering is right for me
i think the ideal job for me right now would be like. climate research or something
but not in academia since that's so cutthroat
that's really cool
ooo im super into academia
as of now
might be different four years down the road
ahaha understandable
fr lmao
some random kids saying "rate my AP schedule" on reddit will lead the exploration of knowledge
lmaoo 😭
do you people know if williams flies you in for previews cause I heard that somewhere-
😭 by that I mean if williams pays for it
have any accepted kids gotten their package yet
nope I think some have recieved them
I am also intl so idk if they even send it
for us
Waitlisted
mines coming on Tuesday
How can I find out when my package arrives
if you have USPS informed delivery it will show you!
mine is also expected monday ahhh
do you guys know if math/cs/econ/stats students tend to feel limited by course offerings?
my bestie so pretty
so is there a discord or instagram chat yet because i don’t have groupme😜and have no storage on my phone😜
thats what im sayin
From what I know math and econ people have a tonnnnn of courses to choose from and are never limited to any degree. Stats is a newer department however so i think their course offerings are a little more limited. CS Is getting larger and larger and is getting revamped in order to provide more elective courses for students
@proven grotto
Also econ people can take grad level classes over at the CDE fr fr
if anyone has pictures of their admitted student merch i will kiss the ground you walk on
you’ll literally get it tomorrow no?
Lol
Idt there is
Let's make one?
if y’all make pls send the link 🙏🏻
Wait do insta groups work with links? We can make a discord server too yea
i feel like a disc server cld handle the most amnt of ppl
omg my package is coming today!!
SAME SO EXCITED
mine says today but it didn’t come with regular mail ?
these socks r perf for school tmrw actually
SEND PICTURES @raw monolith
what’s in the package
socks and beanie?
omg I need to see
it is LMFAO
They give transfer students a personalized letter saying why they got in
my parents don’t understand liberal arts colleges
but yes no blanket fr
my dad just told me i won’t get a job if i go to williams because it’s an extended summer camp…
he’d never heard of it before friday when i told him i got in
Mine too 😭all my friends are going to Mckinsey next year tho which i consider worse
all my classmates when I told them I was considering Williams over hopkins
“What’s Williams”
“I can’t believe you would give up both hopkins and umich”
if my parents were gonna force me to go to my state school they shouldve told me freshman year so i didn’t sweat so hard😭
bro lives in alaska and got his before me
LMFAO
@lapis bear wya
I’m surprised it came today
it was originally indicating for tomorrow delivery
mb ..
LMAOO i got the same “why would you choose williams over ucla” talks today
i heard the beanie looks like an M pls confirm or deny 🤞
Got my package today😭🫶🏾
LMAOO kidding my dad said the williams beanie looks like an M not a W
no literally same
i live in georgia
ok tbh the patterns rly cute ngl
The socks are so cute
😭
extended summer camp is funny
If any of you are going to previews I could probably show you around campus with my friend (if I'm not too busy)
@carmine anvil i might take you up on that
Same here
got my acceptance package today 🥳
I didn’t apply but how are y’all feeling about Williams T7? https://www.forbes.com/top-colleges/
Our annual review of America’s best colleges spotlights schools that deliver a top-notch education for an affordable price, funnel graduates into high-paying careers and propel students to become successful entrepreneurs and influential leaders in their fields. Whether a school is in the Top 10 or near the bottom, these 500 schools showcase the ...
Should be T1 🥰
One list as Williams as the 12th ranked LAC so idk
All arbitrary
i feel like shit
malding and seething
wish williams had a grad school
i'll come back as a professor :((
is anyone familiar with the maths program at Williams? how does it compare to other top universities like MIT or Princeton?
Williams has in my opinion one of the best math programs out there. However, MIT and Princeton are just the best at Math point blank. The program itself is super flexible, after you take the core you can choose what you specialize in pretty quickly and everyon in the department does research directly with faculty
thanks so much for your response
very helpful
what do you think about the postgraduate/job opportunities coming out of Williams as an international student, compared to these other big-name top universities? is it a dealbreaker?
my package got lost in the mail hello
Its absolutely not a dealbreaker from what ive seen. Everyone in my immediate friend group at williams whos graduating got into a top graduate program (mostly Stanford) or is going to a pretty good entry job if they wanted to go into industry right away. This includes my international friends. I will say however that most of my international friends after their 4 years dont want to stay in the US for work due to the working culture
Not because they get less opportunuties to do so however
All my teachers act like Williams is nothing when I ask for their thoughts ):
I feel like I lean towards williams but I feel so conflicted between it and hopkins
what's your major"?
I would choose williams anyday, the people who are important and worth it like recruiters and grad schools know williams
and thats what matters
math or more specifically applied math
applied math is housed in the engineering school at hopkins
while I’d be getting a BA at Williams
I definitely like the atmosphere and types of opportunities at Williams better
but I like the size of hopkins better and also the range of courses in my major
The size is something you can't change about Williams and is a huge part of the expirience, so I would be a little careful if you prefer larger sized unis
For math though, I feel Williams is the best choice because it has one of the best math programs in the country. It hosts SMALL which is a math conference and the math education and opportunities are really good
I am not too sure about the engineering aspect of Hopkins, but both are great schools and you cant go wrong
BA vs BS doesn't really matter
For what it's worth, the catalog for Williams for last math semester isn't representative of all the electives because some profs choose to rotate the electives they teach
Williams math catalog is good for its size, but of course you can't really beat a large school in course selection
I agree, size is pretty important to consider. Williams is a small school, no way to escape it.
How much did the financial aid offers vary between the two schools?
You should contact the financial aid to renegotiate your aid, once you contact them they have you fill out a form ircc
Ohh right
Sorry I remember you saying this
Yeah both schools are quite expensive sticker price 😭
Williams is a bit cheaper
but that’s just off the website coa and not a personalized breakdown
hopkins is 87k bruhh
Huh how did they make it 87k 😭
Williams at 81k is already so expensive
Honestly I enjoy Williams but I don't know if any school is 80k per year good, state school is definitely valid option
there aren't any great schools in alaska
at least state schools
i mean theres university of alaska fairbanks but its literally in the middle of no where and gets to like -40 F
OH 😭
before i got into these two i was just planning on going umich
-40F
72k 😭
Umich is 72k??
yeah I agree with that lol
@vivid junco do you still need help finding the contact of someone from Alaska at Williams?
yeah
I can DM you their email
that would be great
well if you would think they would be open to that
lol
i think im like 80% commited to williams
now if i got brown plme in some other world
im not sure but
chances of that are near 0
are you premed?
if you had to choose
between williams and ucla
which one would you choose
(for political science)
i feel like
both r probably similarly good for the field
but they’re so different as colleges
i’d choose based on fit
like which school u think matches u better
i see
my fit would def be williams
but i live in cali so it's gonna be a huge decision if i move
most of the graduate schools that know abt williams are on the east soooo
hmm yeah that’s p big
is the price for williams similar to in state ucla for u?
williams is a little bit cheaper actually, but i'd imagine that flight costs will rack up
my parents have a steady income tho so i should be able to afford both
i feel like if yk u want to go to graduate school
williams is the way to go
it’s just so good for feeding into grad school
a lot of people on the east coast have told me that
- i think generally polisci is more of a east coast thing tbh
i’m from the west coast and i still think williams tbh
as a person that hadn't even heard of williams until last year i wanna be careful before i make a huge decision to move yk; especially since i'm considering law school
that's fair
there aren't a lot of people on the west coast that know about williams
i’m a law school hopeful too tbh
i think williams is better
ucla is such a giant public i think it’d be difficult to get opportunities
ik a girl who turned down stanford for williams even
bruh 😭 😭
that's the thing
like ill go on reddit
and ill see people turning down cornell dartmouth and a bunch of other ivies for williams
and then i feel hella dumb bc i still can't make up my mind
same so real bro
idk
i think grad schools on west coast will still know abt williams
maybe
imma prob ask more people
bc i've heard a lot of positive things about the school but they've mostly been from people on the east
ty for your help
I got into Williams but I withdrew bruh
ty and gl on duke!
damn why
same haha
that’s kinda funny
They socks ugly as hell bro ngl
right???
Their normal merch lowk fire tho
lmfao
their graphic design majors must be crying at that card tbh
Tbf it’s hard to make a good sock with yellow and purple
i guess they cld just do a solid purple w a yellow band or smthn
but it’s just a very bold set of colors
Actually if you are on fin aid, Williams pays for a roundtrip every year
they covered like 99% of my tuition and fees
but everything else still racks up to about $23K
Right
Though even if it isnt mentioned on your document, I think they cover travel, books and insurance costs for EVERYONE getting aid. Not completely sure though
I have travel expenses listed as indirect costs, which are not covered by financial aid
either ways, money is expungable so aid is aid yk
Ohhh okay
yup 😭 i’m also from california and not a lot of people from west coast know about williams
here in alaska -- everyone now thinks im choosing like a community college over hopkins
LITERALLY
The amount of “why aren’t u going to ucla” i got
actually williams is one of the best at getting their kids into the top grad schools! if ur considering that 🙏
lol yep
it’s really satisfying when somebody knows the school though
my dad is obsessed with williams cause he’s from the east coast
so true they’re so humble
the ones i’ve met have been super nice and they’re always like “i go to this small school you’ve probably never heard of :))” and it’s williams
I was telling one of my teachers that I like Williams over hopkins
and he kinda gave me a look
but it’s okay
i will make it known at my hs
be the change you want to see in the world !
Bruh but my dad was comparing the average sat of Williams to hopkins
and the % of students in the top 10% of their hs class
and he’s like
are the hopkins kids better than Williams
😭
I’ve never met anyone who’s gone to Williams
HELLO?? my teacher who went to MIT applauded me so just pretend he applauded u too
YESS build ur legacy >>
it’s also only undergrad.. you’ll never have the chance to go again
may not have the chance to attend hopkins again 😭
also true 😭 you really can’t go wrong either way but i hope u choose williams!! :)) i’m sure you’ll be happy at both
Do y’all know what the social scene is like at Williams
Sounds pretty good to me
Hopkins has 99% for top ten percent, i think both princeton and williams are around 95-93% on there thing. I think its more that williams is more established (cause its older) so it has less to prove while hopkins wants to boost its numbers to maintain its t10 position.
Hopkins priority is more about raw numbers and clearly shooting for high scores. I think williams is lookign more holistically but like to be honest the difference is so marginal 💀
but they didn’t have supplements until this year lol
The personal statement matters a lot to AOs at williams, even tho they didnt have a supp i believe
deleted 😭
it wss a whole thing about like school priorities and stuff but honestly this is so semantic it dont matter 😭
o
Excited for preview day literally making my packing list
WOO i’ll be there too !!
Can’t wait to meet you guysss we should meet up at some spot discord live🤭🙌🏾
who’s going to the thing at 8 eastern
I think I’ll join in
me too
Do we have to register for the Williams event
Which one the zoom or preview?
Zoom
Na you just clink the link in ur acceptance letter
yea i got it thank u
Aww man I just reached home from school
I’ll see ya guys on campus if I end up attending lmao
If anyone here has not gotten the Williams ‘27 discord yet you can dm and I’ll send an invite
it’s fuckijg hilarious to have an a2c and williams crossover
i was an ED admit so i just kind of was quiet on a2c
and now all of the sudden a good amount of the RD admits are a2c people
LMAO
is that not typical
not at least in the ED group but i didn’t expect the crossover at all, i know a2c is huge but it was a surprise that there were members at the small liberal arts college i’m going to
for food/isolation, i recommend watching videos from current students. search up GenuinelyGwyn for an honest review of food and student life
on Youtube
we need more Williams YouTubers lol
i have a playlist of my favorite videos i’ll send it soon!
Im friends with Andrew oh and im lab partners with gwyn 😭
That’s so cool
Gwyns rlly nice fr fr, also rlly smart. Id die for andrew fr fr
Just to emphasize how tight knit everyone is here lmfao
Pog
i never understood why she starts her videos not facing the camera 😭
It's okay. Not ideal and depends on the day. Sometimes there is good food and sometimes there isn't.
It has people socialize more and do things around campus that can be more accessible to other students
The isolation itself can be tough depending on the person. I think first semester was a lot more tiring than I realized at the time.
Did you guys get to choose ephventures/Woolf trips yet?!
oh man ☹️ are there any chances to go out into boston/nyc during long weekends or breaks?
What’s that?
that’s crazy williams is so small
both of them are great
not yet idts, which one do you recommend though?
@carmine anvil @dim arrow any suggestions for traveling to previews alone?
For me it was a bit different since williams books rooms for transfers but I would say make friends with your fellow preview peeps and just explore campus as much as you can. Ill be trying to help out a bunch of the preview people when i have time off class so you might see some other upperclassmen showing their preview buddies around
For the trip youll have a student mentor so theyll find you accomodations and how to get around but for the most part theyll have events for all the preview people to go to
Ah I meant more logistical like shuttle and housing
since Williams isn’t paying for my ticket (I think) not sure if those things would be provided
I believe williams pays for the ticket lemme check
even if not on financial aid?
actually i dont think they fly out students who are not on financnial aid but email your dean (as shown in your admissions letter) and ask whether its possibke for your ticket to be paid for
and also email about a shuttle
alright tysm!
If u ask there is a good chance theyll pay fr fr
rly? they’d do that?
Si si
wait lmk if u email and they say yes !
too bad I don’t think I’m actually able to go so I’m not gonna email 😭sorry
noo
i might just email and see what happens but lol i don't wanna be on bad terms with the dean before i even enroll 😭
Hello everyone! So at the moment, Williams College is my first choice, but I'm concerned about the academic rigor, especially since I'm going to do pre-med. Would you say that Williams College prepares extremely well for grad school and you still have time to relax outside of class?
Absolutely. It helps especially for having good rec letters
Have you been able to pursue courses you're interested in that are outside of the pre-med requirements? Also, is it difficult to maintain a high GPA?
I’m also a class of ‘27 admit but that is just what I heard, can’t say from experience
Gotcha
I mean, I heard that those in pre-med at Williams felt that medical school was easier for them because of the academic rigor they faced at Williams.
But I still would like to have a social life outside of academics, lol.
What schools are you comparing to?
So at the moment, my top two are Williams and Amherst, but if I get into Brown as well as their PLME, then it'll be a competition between Williams and Brown.
Oh I’m sorry I misread your question
Yeah Williams is academically rigorous but you’re gonna find that’s the case for all top LACs/t20/t30s
I think you will have plenty of time to socialize
I think most of the time you hear about kids being under time crunch from the workload because they want to do so many other things (clubs, socialize, work, other hobbies, etc)
Yeah, but from what I've heard, it's one of the most, if not the most academically rigorous out of all the LACs. I'm fine with that, but I would definitely like to have time to do the things I enjoy.
True, that might be me, lol.
Anyways, I'm like 95% sure I'm going to Williams. I'm just waiting for Ivy Day.
Sounds just like me! Waiting for brown PLME as well but doubt I’d get in since didn’t really demonstrate commitment to medicine
Samee, I couldn't get any clinical experience during high school because of COVID-19. Also, I come from a small town with very little diversity and opportunities.
I seriously doubt that I got into PLME.
Is Williams your top college at the moment?
Yeah I mean the acceptance rate is like 2.8% or something for PLME so most people won’t get in lol
^^
Yeah, I also have Johns Hopkins but I think Williams is the place 4 me
I got rejected from there, lmao. It's my only rejection 🤣
Wow
But yeah, in my opinion, Johns Hopkins is overrated 😛
I’ve been rejected from Stanford, mit, northeastern, Pomona and Harvey mudd lol
Did not apply to any of those, lol
I would personally say that williams does extremely well for premed placement and preparation. Ive heard from majority of people that while they had to pull allnighters at williams they never had to at med school so take that as you will lol
I've heard similar things!
A bunch of people i know are getting into stanford and harvard med from williams this year, either that or theyre taking a gap year and working at harvard med school lol
its weird idk why this happens 😭
Crazy
Damn, that's insane. I guess you could say that I'm worried about the academic rigor and the learning curve, lol
I think swarthmore and williams are like neck and neck fron what ive seen fr fr
I never applied there, but I heard that Swarthmore is slightly easier than Williams
But not so much
Someone said they're pretty much the same in terms of academics, though I might be wrong.
Trust me yall will be fine if you choose to come here, its a lot but its an environment thats made to try and help u succeed, also like if u got in the learning curve will be manageable
I think the biggest learning curve was time management
Gotcha
I think that will be my biggest issue
I'm lowkey slacking this semester due to senioritis, lol
Also i was choosing between amherst and williams as well congrats lol!!
Thank you!
Amherst flop tho 🙄🫶
Lmaoo, I'm visiting both schools in April, so we'll see!
I most likely will go with Williams tho 👀
Same
Amherst campus is more traditional but williams campus is a lit more like…. Unique
It has its ups and downs 😵💫
are there any Williams hoodies that are a must have
^^
si si we have a store here
I need a hoodie, lol
I was considering the cow spotted one and the purple Williams one
Wait does someone have a link
i myself dont have a hoodie, i needs to buy one
I was literally thinking about purchasing one last night
People wear that at the football games fr fr
😂
Yassss williams slay, whatre u planning on majoring in btw i think thats the big distinction between the two schools
they are exactly the same in my opinion
I'm thinking of majoring in Psychology or English with a concentration in Neuroscience. I intend on going to med school after college, so...
I know Amherst has a Neuroscience program, but Williams seems like a better fit for pre-med in general
I think youll be successful at either, i personally like that professors are more intense here tho but amhersts do what you wanna do mentality also helps when making ur schedule
True true, but personally, I would prefer to have the smaller classes, winter study, and closer relationships with the professors.
And the tutorials seem really appealing!
you also get to be an ephman
Lmao, true
omg do u have the link
THANK UUU
u buying it? 😂
r u committed?
not yet but likely will be !
There are so many sweatshirt/hoodie options for men, but not for women ;-;
I'm just gonna purchase a couple of men's sweatshirts/hoodies, lol
Which one are you guys thinking of purchasing?
Omg, there's stuffed animals
I'm getting the cow
No questions abt it
The cow one and then the purple Williams one from the Williams bookstore
Nice nice
hey! i’m a current junior. dm me if you have any questions or wanna talk about williams
congrats on getting in! and if you didn’t, I wish you the best wherever you go! college is really what you make of it
im in but i hate when people say that from a perspective of being in a top school
it's a true statement but it doesn't make people feel better 😭
i would offer ben and jerry if I could
what made you choose williams over other choices?
i ed so I didn’t have a choice
but really it’s the people, fin aid, and post-grad options
I also attended WOW and that really helped inform my decision
would you say there’s a sufficient variety of food options at Williams?
for special diets, less so but overall it’s not too bad
ik there's the blue mango thai place but how's the asian cuisine at williams?
it’s a hit or miss, sometimes it’s pretty decent
they have sriracha so I sometimes just put a bunch on my food lol
there’s also chopsticks and meng’s
which both do delivery
if time gets desperate
When do i need to accept waitlist by?
april 15th i think
To be fair, how academically rigorous a class is really depends on the class itself and prof
All nighters are generally avoidable with better time management I feel like
Cause workload can be like waves during semester, so if you find a way to lessen the workload during exam season it becomes a lot more managable
Something I feel like that's good about intro premed courses is that it feels like Williams profs aren't intentionally trying to weed out people
Apparently Harvard medical school matriculate average GPA is like a 3.96, hard to believe many people can have that GPA here 😭
what's the average gpa at williams ?
Not sure. I remember reading like about 3.5-3.6
Premed in general is stressful worrying about grades though 😭
My choice to try to be math major as premed is probably not the smartest choice...
Some math courses do be pretty difficult
i was thinking about that too lol
of doing that *
i like applied math but i would like to keep med school open as option, but not sure if that's wise or not
Hmm if you are confident about math it could be fun
well, i don't have any olympiad background nor proof based experience
am currently taking diffeq but thats about it lol so def not a math genius
That doesn't necessarily mean you aren't good at math
sure yeah lol but we'll see
do alot of the freshmen math majors have aime/usamo/etc experience and have already taken graduate level analysis courses
not really
I feel like Williams math doesn't have that many competition math background people
I know some people who started off in upper level math courses, but isn't the majority
What math courses have you taken?
but isn't williams math pretty good
calc ab (got Bs in both semesters but 5 on exam (jhu cty 😭 )) calc bc (5) calc 3 (A+) but not very rigorous at all and currently diff eq (again not very rigorous)
okay you will be placed into linear algebra probably
well i am worried that i forgot alot already
esp alot of the calc 2 series stuff and already forgetting calc 3 stuff
so im thinking i should just study up over summer break
but idk if it would be wise to retake some of those just to get a better foundation
Hmm if you wanted to take calc 3 again then Math 150 is pretty superb and covers series and sequences at the end
not sure though
If Colin Adams teaching math 150 again, I would choose it over math 151 with loepp (harder grader, both are fantastic teachers)
I would just take Math 250 tbh, Williams is lenient with letting people skip up and not have to retake courses
Well im more concerned with having a weak foundation
Lol I didn't take a math class this semester because of premed reqs and prof choice
Valid
my math up to now has not been rigorous at all so if i do end up skipping i'll study a ton over summer
For what it's worth, my math IB score was so bad and they placed me into calc 3, when I should've retaken all of calc prob
what does that mean lol
like a 3 on an AP exam?
Not sure how it translates into AP
But think like someone with only AP AB calc with mediocre score getting placed into calc 3
haha okay will do
Hoping it is loepp even though she is difficult grader
lmao I struggle in math
U know way more than I did lol don't worry
have you viewed your admission file?
currently in ap chem
okay if you can place into chem 156 with a high ap chem score, I would suggest caution depending on prof
For example, I've heard Lee Park was pretty difficult last semester for Chem 156
On the other hand, I took chem 153 and was really pleased with my prof.
In general, if there is an easier version of the class with a good prof then I don't see a reason to needlessly take a harder version of the class. Of course, there are times where harder class can also be the better choice.
Also something interesting is that Williams has orgo for second semester chem instead of gen chem 2
the thing is
whenever people say something is rigorous idk how rigorous it actually is
cause everyone said on the forums that ap chem is super hard and ive breezed through it so /shrug
cap
ap chem is the devils class
well okay
my class only is graded on tests
and we only do ap style q's
so idk if that makes it easier
also we get a slight curve
Thats pretty standard, the fact that ur class is only graded on tests already makes is much harder then majority of highschools lol
everyone on reddit says its hard asf so
but when I look at amc / aime problems I have no idea lmao
so
it’s hard for me to pick a school cause I don’t know what I want and I’m interested in too many fields
U gots that liberal arts education mindset
but they’re all stem fields 😭
Liberal arts just means “broad intellectual fields”, thats why LACs make u take bio and math and english fr fr
liberal arts education would mean u wanna take a bunch of stuff in different subjects

Man I’m so bipolar
yesterday night I was like hard commited to Williams and this morning I wasn’t so sure
What other schools do u have
Johns Hopkins
Damn that’s tough. Atleast u rlly cant go wrong
sorry just reading this convo LOL! potential stats major here— I was reading the major requirements and for math it needs a math 150 calc 3 + linalg but I’ve already taken calc 3 as dual. would I retake it again (which I am totally ok with) or it sounds like as you’re saying they might just let skip it entirely and go direct to 250?
sorry that sounds a lil messy
Go direct to 250
I recommended STAT 201 next semester cause Prof. Plantinga will be teaching it
Thats perfectly normal fr fr dw
whichever you choose will be good fr
How difficult is it to double major in applied math and cs at Williams?
Idk abt those majors specifically but double majoring is super easy at williams
Most students do it i think
Some people even triple major
if you're not premed it is fine
If you're premed, it would be difficult to fit in both majors on top of premed reqs
sorry random question but is taking the AP tests worth it for williams?
If you want advanced placement then yes
only for a few courses
Williams College Class of 2026 Make sure to reference individual department notes cited below. Test Score Major Course Credit Eligible to Enroll Art History All No advanced placement Art Studio All No advanced placement Biology 5 Department assigns Chemistry All Department assigns Department assigns Chinese All Department assigns Classics Latin ...
perfect thank u !
np
How’s the depth of the machine learning/ai courses at Williams? Hard for me to gauge simply from the course offerings
is it easy to double major+pre med? I’m looking to be a stats major and potentially doubling in econ and LOL my parents want me to be premed and I might as well as it’s just a couple extra chem courses
are you me
Hahah no way what are you looking to do
Williams has applied math pathway
those four majors are literally my choices
Yooo, a fellow pre-med!
Nice to meet you 🙂
i think i might opt for stats -- a little easier i feel 💀
nice to meet you!!
Hmm. It is easier with econ + stats compared to the previous math + cs because stats is a div 2 which helps with prereq
You might (probably?) have to fifth course to double major on top of premed reqs
That being said, econ is nice because it is div 2 and from what I've heard, it isn't a hard major
I know someone premed who is taking econ as a fifth course for GPA boost
Btw if you are gonna major in econ, make sure you take the standard econ first semester class unless you place out of it of course
Because econ has a lot of required courses for major, you need to start early. You could start 2nd semester with econ 110, but worse prof and gets stressful with planning with study abroad.
Uhh tentatively math as premed?
I'm thinking of majoring in Psych with a concentration in Neuroscience because I'm interested in both fields, and I think it'll also help fulfill the pre-med requirements
Gotcha
How are the math courses at Williams?
I've only taken one course, but from my experience and from what I have seen very good teachers and department.
That's good. I'm currently taking AP Calculus AB and I'm wondering if I should try and get a good score so that I can opt out of the intro courses
But on the other hand, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't opt out because it might serve me better if I take an intro course at Williams
Lol I think even if you don't do the best in AB they still place you in multivariable but not sure abt this
I think that multi is a good intro class to start with though
A lot of first years take it, and if it is Colin Adams teaching it first semester then he is very excellent teacher (I took with him).
Lol besides multi first semester he teaches tiling or knot theory.
His expertise is knot theory mainly.
Gotcha gotcha
Also the way calc 3 is taught, it's not like you need a strong foundation of calc 1 or 2 because their focus is different.
I see
what's the focus?
Extending calculus to another variable. Like for example finding the bounds for a triple integral, but not focusing on integrating complex integrals.
LMAO I’m no where near knowledgeable for that
Im taking one rn its pretty good!! Pretty theoretical but i still get a lot of skill development in the labs
The prereq for finishing the math major is doing putnam

Do you have to score high or smth lol
Also i saw a previous thing about this but i do know a few math olympiad people at williams, super smart guy and hes going to cmu grad for computer science fr fr
Dang
i think its just that most of the olympiad people dont talk it about it
Humble fr
yeah I feel like there's not really an Olympiad culture
theres a bug culture here about being super quiet abiut the stuff u do 😭
Def yeah, theres not a lot of competition stuff here that people continue here.
I think the olympiad math stuff is starting back up next year tho! One of my friends wants to start it back up or start a diff one
Interesting !
i have to talk to him to confirm tho 🙏
Bro u know everyone lol
I think putnam studying was the only Olympiad related thing before
It's a small school and some people just know a lot of other people
i think its more just i have a weird amount of friends who are math/science people
Its not a good thing
lol
Are you CS major?
im anthro and geos but i do cs stuff on the side
Have you two met irl
nope
Prob not
Ah
I dont hang with the williams freshman plebs
A2c meet up 😭
would be so cringe 😭 saying we met from a2c
Downbad behavior
imagine meeting ur wife from a college decision mega thread
Someone at Williams figured out who I am on discord...
I know the person too, she did the same with me lmfao
😭
Well my irl name is Ben so…

Looks like I’m getting doxxed
Yeah we are thinking of the same person I think
Based on your edit

what does your discord handle mean
what’s a scythner
Its weird, basically the scythe username was used on wizard101.com so i used scythner instead
get on rn
Ben do you play league of legends?
Cursed days
😡😡
Nah ow/cs
Good no league
Please dont, this is supposed to be a safe space

Gaming club at Williams is basically league club
Cringe
I’m starting w101 club
we making it through arc 4 it’s time
Trust me i know, i can tell by the smell in jesup when i walk in for lab
LOL
TRUEE
the Jesup smell
I opened all the windows on the 2nd floor before and it kept smelling
they need to knock that ugly ass building down and do some urban renewal on it

it gives me a sense of rundowness
why is it pink tho
lmao true
Like it stands out so much from the rest of the quad 😭
The gaming club is trying to expand, it just becomes difficult with OIT and installing different games on the PC
Jesup is 😳
Humanities quad is sexier def
jfskdbjss
Gaming club is pretty casual
The gis class kicked yall out
what's gis
we should start a four square club
@dim arrow how’d you choose W over UPenn
oh btw do you know anything about the debate team?
I've heard mixed things about them but Scynther probably knows more
interesting
I know more about the mock trial team
I've only heard people's first impressions of the debate team, which I don't think are probably that accurate.
also- I have pretty much graduated and now I have 5 months of nothing lined up and I was wondering if I should just do calc 3 so I can skip it or would you recommend just doing it in college instead-
oh how is that?
Great people
that makes sense!
What's your tentative major again?
i have no idea, maybe math with a neuro concentration? maybe double with anthro?
but math is probably going to be sneak in anyway
Honestly, I would try to enjoy your time before college!
fair enough 😭
But if you are finding yourself bored, then studying for multi won't hurt either 🙂
In what sense like what made me so delusional or 😭
I think the freshmen are starting somethin, its okay but i thibk mock trial is better
It fit me more and also gave me more aid, i also think academically it was gonna prepare me better for a phd and has better phd placement overall fr fr. The academics are much more tailored to each student snd theres a bigger academic culture here, upenn was just way too preprofessional for me and the people i found at williams i just liked more
a lot of other stuff too but williams just seemed to have better professor student interactions and atleast for my department was a lot more rigorous which i preffered
upenn is a great school no doubt about it but it was just too big for me and the people are like hopkins level competitive there which i wasnt too into
More or less competitive than hopkins ?
About the same just differently, people competing to get into mckinsey rather then jhu med school if that makes sense
jhu and upenn are super similar in my opinion, its just that everything at upenn is geared towards business and consulting while jhu everything is geared towards medical research no matter the department
Makes sense
theres more of a student body focus, williams has a lot more academic diversity which has its pros and cons
The problem for me is that I want to do something engineering/ai related w medicine and I’m just interested in too many fields and want to combine them
even the venture capital at jhu is medical oritented 😭
so idk if hopkins would be better for the former
oop On my way!
omw*
autocorrect 😭
Hmmmm well you can def do that at jhu, you can do that at williams as well but itl be through different means. Its gonna be down to what you want to do
yeah the thing is idk yet lol
im super experienced in equity trading, but interested in engineering and ai solutions in healthcare so
ahhh I spread myself too thin
I promise im not entirely a finance bro 😭😭😭
Hmmmm
idk what I want to do as a career path yet that’s why I’m not sure
sure as hell not something like finance that’s not beneficial to society
this is definetly difficult, i think if you go jhu youll def be funneled in that direction real quick but it will be harder to get yourself out of it while in it while at williams you can definetly explore it but itl be more up to independent research grants and professor support that you get rather than the venture capital stuff that jhu does. Williams will give you more time to try out and stuff and more leeway to step into diff things but jhu will give u that research focus
Yeah my parents think Williams a better fit
Engineering at hopkins is a commitment point blank, if you do it youll have to decide to major in it really quickly and youll only be able to take one class per semester outside of the major itself. Its a different experience but worthwhile if you feel like its something you wanna do
Williams has a materials science pathway but its defiently not as confined fr fr
but also not as structured lol
well they said that applied math is a p light weight major and easy to double major at hopkins
but Williams to me gives me more of the home vibes so
oooo if ur doing ams then its easier to double major, if u were doing chem be that would be difficult lmfao
Starting something as in?
After covid everything went to hell but i think they are trying to piece the club back together
Oh oops
Is the food better now that covid restrictions are getting a bit lessened
How's the difficulty of the chem major 👀 I'm slightly interested
its difficult def, its one if the harder majors at willy
I can not stand chem at this point in my life
Its okay, i think williams is hiring new people for the dining and revamping stuff but its not back to normal standards yet
You can def try it out! Dont knock it till you try it
Chems fun
I loved chem until orgo oof
Omg chem besties
Orgo is the only chem I like 💀
Lmaoo

Chem feels so intuitive and logical to me
I liked a lot of the physical chem stuff more then orgo but i self taught that to myself, i cant say too much bout the class itself
Idk it feels so disconnected to me, like a million half true theories with weird exceptions and so much useless memorisation
Physical is better for sure, inorganic sucks though
Really off topic, but do you know how easily Williams provides disability accommodations?
As for the sciences, I love anything chem, but hate physics
With a passion
For some reason, physics doesn't click in my head
what kind of accommodations do u need ?
From what I read on their website, I think you can mail the student services or something and request specific accommodations
Yeah I saw that too, I'll prob ask someone at the Previews as well
if you feel comfortable saying I realized I shouldn’t have asked 😭
The accomodations office is super lenient and a lot of the students atleast have absolute support when it comes to anxiety, extra time on tests, taking less classes per semester etc etc. i cant say too much for the physical disability stuff however
Omg not linky den
Gotcha, I do have a physical disability, but I'm not in a wheelchair or anything. Thanks for letting me know though! The extra time accommodation is def going to come in handy
I had my whole efc in my username once it was so bad

Stopp, that's so bad 💀
weirdChamp
😭
alr well now that I’m committed (at least until tmr morning) I can buy merch !
im too bipolar on this decision
falling under peer pressure to chase the t10 prestige 😭
and the 5 year bs + ms in AMS
and hopkins as a medical institution
The ams masters is useless from what ive been told, engineering masters 🙄
Come back to the light
jk if u become a hopkins baddie thatl be so slay but no cow petting for you
LMAO
Trust me when i say this, there are no cows at jhu
nah im like 85%
sure
im going to williams
my parents are telling me to go to williams
go to amherst
my dad wasn't sure until his doctor friend he looks up to said that williams is a top 1% school lol
then he was like yep def williams
LMAO
sorry i don't apply to extinct mammal schools

We have a dinosaur skeleton thats slay
Stanford rea is the bane of everyones existence it seems
stanford enrolls the highest number of kids from alaska out of any t20/tlac
and so it hought i was *for sure gonna get in
come dec 16 2022
dear ben we are very sorry to inform you
so glad i wasnt ever a stanford simp haha (i wanted yale so bad)
startup simp
simp for northeast uni
williams pr needs to put out new youtube videos for me to binge watch
need some inspirational videos 🙏
^^
definitely did not watch the cornell 150 video like 7 times last semester
and the into the columbia blue
williams has a weird policy that they dont like to boast about themselves or publish any accomplishments. Like williams was the only top producing fullbright school that didnt make a post about it on their social media channels

Trust me, they work in the dark dark.
i told andrew to make more videos just for you
dumb mf works at the library front desk and i harass him everytime i see him
sadge
the library staff got mad at me cause i was standing there for thirty minutes roasting the shit out of him for being from LA

I watch the oxford ones all the time, ive actually got tired of the school already
unfortunately, i think oxford is prettier fr fr
well you're gonna have to be there for a year next year so
its like the williams equivalent of the UK, amherst is cambridge
LMAO
