my personal story here:
over quarantine, i had to take care of my sister and my grandmother while doing online school because my parents were working, and then my mom was unemployed and my dad lost his job. didn’t get an adequate foundation in lower level math bc we were insanely stressed about finances so when it came time to take the one free sat my school provides, i had been studying for it but i was also occupied after school most of the time w/ this stuff. i’m middle class and although my sat was decent i don’t think my circumstances or others’ financially are the biggest role in scores, as opposed to the knowledge “divide”
in rural/low income areas it’s hard to be made aware of opportunities even locally because there’s the social perception that you’re just naturally going to be low achieving, and as someone who literally gets mocked for my area anytime i talk about it, it’s really defeating
i’m lucky to have gotten the opportunities i have, but i had to come across a youtube video by chance to be made aware that i can do research in high school. i’ve met with counselors in the past and met with my counselors a lot this year and they couldn’t help me at all because “most people just don’t go to college or go to a 2y”
like 21% of people in my area actually go to college at all and most of the people in advanced classes are middle class+ or have parents who own businesses because people are perturbed by that stuff
