#CMU (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 14 of 1
Oh my bad
Idts
Idk if I would even like CS I don’t have much experience
I’ll probably try to get a minor and Ill either drop it if I don’t like it, get a minor if I’m fine with it, or double major if I really like it
Try to get a double major at least
Can you send a loci to cmu
can you appeal cmu decision?
No
There’s an update form
When you accept waitlist spot
Alright thanks
Pretty standard tbh
@earnest timber Have you checked out the CS courses that one would take during freshman year? I'm kinda curious about them but don't know where to look 😭
I think CMU's Bachelors in CS page has a sample schedule for all 4 years
if you took AP CSA and got a 5: fall: 15122 (basically data structures + C), spring: 15150 (functional programming), 15213 (if you want to, this is intro to systems)
this is the path i took/am taking
👀 this is kinda brutal to take 150 and 213 at the same time
brutal, but (imo) easier than 150 and 251 cuz i suck at concepts LOL
i am marginally better at programming
not a lot of people take 251 fresh fall, do they?
that's quite an introduction to cmu haha
I don't think you can do that with very very few exceptions
I think the best you can do is 150 and 213 fall
you can skip 122?
How long do you guys think it’ll take for CMU to create a financial aid package for me, the last of my financial aid documents were just received by them today
Like according to their portal
stress
How'd it go
I'm gonna accept now lol, i don't want to wait for other schools lol
$1000
gotta pay for every action you do in the US I guess? 😵💫
stay strong 🫡
#💵-financial-aid soon 😢
#✨-celebration-station message
will i join you @vapid canopy ? :0
maybe😝😝😝 im still deciding bc the stress and workload stories are lowk scaring me😭
🫡 im not. the best at math
you hesitate between cmu and what other schools ?
nah im between cmu and UF (for a yr, in state) and then transfer to georgia tech (transfer pathway)
oh sorry got. confused
too complicated for me
yeah if cost isnt an issue, id go cmu @vapid canopy
its no prob i snoop around uiuc thread despite getitng rejected hahahah
bigger and better things now
so i got admitted to a Master in my country, and it costs me less than 1000€ a year
and... there is CMU with a 1000$ deposit
gah damn
usually theyre like $200 or smth but its $800 for me to accept cmu😵
can u afford cmu comfortably?
ive got some scholarships (need based) so it shouldnt be like too bad
depends how much the loans are
u chilling
ikkkkk im more concerned with surviving the. actual classes over the years LOLLL
id go cmu over gt
they are
im not studious
but yk
just. put thee work in
youll survive
theres this s aying my friend sent
1 sec
i agree
The possibility of failure is necessary in order for an accomplishment to be valuable.
Carnegie Mellon is harsh. Built amongst the foreboding gothic towers of a once-great Steel City in the Pittsburgh climate of endless wind and rain, Carnegie Mellon (or CMU, as its grim, studious denizens call it) gives no quarter.
If you arrive as a freshman and find that the courseload or subject matter is too difficult, you will simply begin to fall behind, until you start to fail your courses, and once you fail out of too many, you will be placed on probation and eventually, you will leave. During the first year of every student, if you're not the one who is failing out, you will inevitably know someone who does. It doesn't happen loudly - someone you know will just... disappear. Usually after the first winter break, or some make it through the first year but don't return for the second. Eventually you hear through the grapevine that they transferred to another school, always an easier one (not that there are harder ones). The university has no mercy. You are there to learn and study - the harsh weather and humdrum city life ensure that you do - and if you can't keep up, you will be pitilessly and efficiently removed. Those who survive emerge stronger, hardened, capable.
Carnegie Mellon is Pittsburgh's last steel factory.
i would just feel bad begging my parents to go and then moving far from home just to fall flat on my face hahaha
you won't fall
just gotta put the hours in
i was waitlisted, i sent this to all people who were admitted, and now i got admitted
what's the steel if it's a steel factory
it's actually spelled as s-t-e-a-l factory
😭
Referring to the sticker price
Oh well then it should be a rob factory smh
Yes? (Although everyone I seen do it so far took 151 and 122 in Highschool so...)
you kinda have to remember that the classes are doable, tons of people before have done it, and tons of people after you will also do it, it will suck for everyone of them but it's not impossible, if they were impossible they wouldn't be a class, they'd probably be an active field of research or something (but you can do that too, join a lab here)
it's really fucking hard but it's apparently possible, according to anish
and he took fucking 18240 and 18213 freshman spring, but didn't get out of 15122
man's a menace
Ngl CMU’s acceptance package sucked
CONGRATULATIONS!
2 local pittsburghians did it my year (mainly cos they took 122 in HS but still)
Planning is like 80% of the battle. You need to spread out your hard classes (people take 213 and 251 simultaneously and wonder why they're dying)
Preferably no more than 2 technical classes per sem 3 easier ones may be required some semester
technical classes include like math/science/(any combo of those in elective form) ?
I just realized that you are in high school lol, that may explain why you are afraid lol
don't worry, classes are not thaaat hard if you work seriously, imo
hahahaha 🫡 yep also applied and didn't think i would actually make it in, so im like, lowk double shocked LOL
I am applying for a MS at CMU, at there is no way someone would hesitate between CMU and UF (in computer science)
this is why I was shocked to see your hesitation lmao
triple shocked
hahahahaha i appreciate everyones help ive lowk been a broken record the past few days just like. asking ppl around
we need help and love in this world 🥰
How many of your think you’re committing here
Assuming I don’t get in anywhere else (I only have Harvard and penn) up I’m p sure I’m coming here
If I don’t get in anywhere else, it’s either CMU cs or JHU Hodson
Which I’m really not sure what I should choose
you'll regret it either way 😉
💀
what is this
a MS program
ah ok
is there a date when they'd release their decisions from ppl on waiting list for fall 2023
how tough is it to get off the priority waitlist
i mean, i got waitlisted one month ago, and got admitted yesterday
i don't know how it works
but i thought it would be : if someone drops out, then the university sends an update to the first person of the waiting list?
i think this might be different for masters vs undergrad
for undergrad, there are multiple cycles of offers to get off the waitlist in April (I believe), I was offered a position in the second cycle, and i think they choose based on which type of person they still need in a grade
so it's really just luck
waitlist buddies! congratulations 😄
although i'm an undergrad haha
haha i don't how different it is lol
but it seems undergrads suffer the same anxiety as grad admissions
our deposit was $800, and i was only given 3 days to confirm 😭
otherwise the offer would be sent to someone else
thank god my parents supported me 100% otherwise financially this would be a problem
for undergrads ?????????????????
yea i have to deposit $800 to accept hahahah
this is so different with my country...
your deposit for undergrad is more expensive than a master i applied in my country
it would be even free for highschoolers to secure your spot for post secondary schools
so weird
having parents like this is so >>>
consider yourself lucky!
i survived so why not you :p
There's no way I'm going to survive
It genuinely isn't that bad lol
nothing is that bad when working enough and having a good environment of work
Honestly the scariest thing is falling into the I take more classes than you/get less sleep than you mindset
Just manage your time well
O lol forgot who this was
🫡 i am extremely non-competitive so hopefully i wont fall into this mindset
why does one need to take more classes in undergrad?
You don't. Ppl just do
its a sort of bragging rights that you have so much work/so little sleep in cmu scs
I’ve done that. Taking 4 AP and 2 classes are Purdue this semester
And writing a research paper
also some ppl try to rush through college (eg. Undergrad+Master's in 3 years instead of 5)
😭 ooo thats crazy
as long as you dont end up in this gang you should be fine
on the other hand, this gang generally gets really good results for jobs out of college
Looking at you Janestreet
well is that just because they graduate earlier or just. more experience or what
The quant mindset fr
more experience & theoretically more knowledge
Since you taken more breadth and depth in classes by kinda killing yourself
*note this isn't saying that you won't get into FAANG without this mindset
Imo a work hard play hard get sleep mindset is usually the best
yeaa i understand the grindset mentality but also if i do not sleep my eyes will like 💀 HURT LIKE HELL
did anyone who got into CMU get a welcome email, i'm thinking my accpetance was a mistake...
lemme look
no not like really
the only thing i got was a "join the april kick-off"
No, but I got a letter in the mail
yea i got that only yesterday
ok, I assume those are being sent out, cuz seeing the people here who are cracked, kinda shocked
its ok mehulg hahhahahah i felt that way as well
My 1440 SAT ass got in
yup im 1450 i went test optional
ig its just a dice roll then
its okay, theres always a few really cracked ppl
also i dont have any awards and my activities are like. pretty mid lowk (im a shut-in 😂 hahahaha)
just don't try to outcompete them by working extra hours
yup
Also CMU has really good class support systems (for example Concepts, a hard freshman course will have lots of office hours and tutoring (some even in dorms))
i got one, but i am in a master lol
Office hours are a W Lfg
🫡 the ppl here the only thing keeping me from folding from all the doompost cmu posts i see when i search the name up
it genuinely isn't that bad as long as you decide it won't be that bad
aka don't expect all A's
don't sign up for OS/Compilers without knowing what you are getting into
nahh nah i dont LOL
OS 🥰
👀
Compilers 🤨😡🤮
Theres a saying about OS. Pick your partner for the semester because you will be spending most waking hours with them
that class takes 40+h/week
It’s a partner class?!?!
Like yes
classes at cmu are
starting to feel glad I got waitlisted
Well unless you are actually cracked and decide to tackle it by yourself
how come that class is super sought after
because it essentially teaches you how to build an Operating System from scratch
basically if you want to work in systems, having this class will help you get a job a lot
while (1) {}
OS
riight so no more than 2/3 technical classes per semester.. cs electives (such as this one) count as one of those yes?
if your taking OS you are taking 1 technical class
Even Microsoft couldn’t make one this good
and preferably the easiest most bullshit geneds or even Student classes you can find
are there required classes every year? ik theres some real hard ones at the beginning (i always see the same 5 numbers listed for this one hahah)
112 or 122 or something
112 is intro to programming
You can get out of it thru AP CS
Its pretty chill if you know programming previously and hell otherwise
🫡 hell for me then
my school didnt offer ap csa so i cant skip it hahaha (had csp tho)
Probably reasonably simple then
first weeks are like ints, loops, strings etc
😂 ehhh im unsure.. the language that csp was in was a little weird even i could tell
it was on code.org and like... i think i searched it up and its like really old javascript or smth? 😭
yea its fine
As long as you understand what a for loop is
and like what integers, strings are
you have a head up
and its python
my friend used to do tons of stuff on python it was real cool
Like take a look if you want
wow people are actually revising before getting admitted lol
ooooo cool
I mean since admission came out i think you already know whats up
yes true
😂 hahahhaha i just want to know what im getting into since im not 100% confident in my abilities
do you choose the courses ?
after the first semester yes
For the first semester for CS, its usually pretty standard
Is it hard to get into CS courses from MCS
some variation of 15122 or 15112, Calc 1/2/Linear algebra depending on credit, Concepts, English,
which ones?
and no
well not the ones that its not hard as a regular CS major to get in anyway
Also how much do you feel that professors care about undergrads at CMU
Any class for a minor you should never not get in
A lot
esp for your earlier classes
CMU does this thing where theres Professors, Teaching Professors and Research Professors
admidral, are you still in CMU ?
yea
what year ?
I've graduated from undergrad last year and I'm doing a 5th year masters
oh nice, master in what ?
CS

Which btw in case ppl were thinking about it does not make financial sense
What are the differences
😭
Teaching Professors are hired for teaching ability
Diff program. 5th year CS (basically you dun goofed if you don't get in)
dun goofed ?
its exclusive for SCS undergrads though
ohh
Do have anything lined up after graduating from your masters?
you were in CMU since undergrad
yea
I believe the acceptance rate is 100%
or somewhere close to that
backend engineer for a startup focusing on AI
meanwhile for us
Wait isn’t Facebook meta?

what is the difference between enrolled and accepted ?
“Enrolled” means that the accepted individual has decided to attend that school, which is also called matriculation.
Like I got in several schools
But I can only enroll at one school, especially given I can’t split into two Rynox’s to attend two schools at the same time.
So looking at MSCS you would say the yield is 35/111 = 31.5%
makes sense, but isn't there a limited number of seats ?
This is where yield rates (and essentially overbooking) comes in
If they expect 30ish % of people to accept then they would accept 100 people for a class size of say 40
So they admit a certain number of applicants, of which that figure is contingent on past years’ “yield rates.”
and then accept the rest off the waitlist to account for mistakes
oh ok
learning so much through this discord than googling lol
so how does the waitlist work ?
It’s always good to leave it to the professionals 👍
However, like airlines overbooking, this can cause problems
They want a class size of 40. Accepts 100 people, of which 35 accepts. Then they go and grab 5 ppl from waitlist
i thought it would have been: if there are 35 seats, then you accept 35 people, and waitlist 100 people, and reject the rest
CMU would be accepting SOOO many people off the waitlist for that
CMU Yields are generally kinda low so they can over accept by a lot
It bit them in the butt in the 2021-2022 cycle though
okkk
If there is less admitted applicants than expected who eventually decides to enroll at a school, the admission committee would take some number of qualified candidates off the waitlist to fill in the gap.
Yeah basically what he said
i thought than people would want CMU more
i can't imagine how so many people would reject CMU in MS
generally if you get into CMU you also have choices
Eg. Stanford CS, Berkeley/MIT ECE
Caltech, Harvard, Yale and so on
Eg. Stanford CS, Berkeley/MIT ECE
yep (this is where i also applied to lol)
and given that you cant attend both places, you have to decline 1
makes sense 35% is about 1/3
competition between stanford berkeley and CMU in CS
Which results in school yield rates often not being 100% since there are alway admitted students who ends up committing to another school
Yea theres usually 4 (+ sometimes Harvard) that people pick from: CMU,Stanford, berkeley,MIT
i am not used to that system because my current university has a yield rate is over 80%
what sometimes happens though is if significantly more people than expected accept the offer (like in 2021-2022 when the year before a lot of people defferred their accpetances and thus the other top uni gave out far less offers) then you end up with over-enrollment
theres a placement test for it
harvard for CS lol
only for prestige, not for the program...
the Harvard program is actually really good. Especially for undergrad, it allows you to pursue other interests as well too
If I get into Cornell, should I pick it over CMU for engineering lol
Given money doesn’t matter that much
i mean, over enrollment should be okay right? more students give 50k per year
housing for undergrads and class sizes
Anybody here waitlisted tepper
You don't want to end up like berkeley where there literally is not enough room in the lecture hall to fit all the students so some people have to attend online from their dorms
Arf
would it be better for me to brush up on the material the summer beforehand (💀) or just take the class
i can help if you need!
ap computer science principles (what i took) =/ ap computer science a (what i believe you need to have taken and got a 5 to get credit for the intro class)
you say =/
i say !=
we are definitely different
😭 I TOOK CSP LAST YEAR and have not touched coding since then (except for little python tutorials which i have. forgotten hahahah)
don't worry i can still help
1st year courses should be okay for grad people like me right? 🥲
i have never touched coding before post secondary
I would take the class
It's a really good class
Bought this to celebrate, likely wearing it tmr to school haha
class of '27
which means?
that indicates the year in which you graduate
like for high schoolers
we are the class of '23
ahh
which makes some sense as well
😭
Is there a CMU discord ? Or a discord for grad students 🥲
i feel so odd one out here, thankfully admidral doesn't make me feel alone lol
uhh there are several
is it too soon to join? PM?
usually one for each year
Did you get a CMU email
You should join the student hub
By using that email
Probably a server for grad students
@hearty delta mmight be able to help u w/ this?
oof i'm only in the 2026 and 2027 discords 😭
i'm grad, not undergrad lol
Master of Science, i'll graduate in 2025 lol
before you :p
most recent are always the prettier
can someone send the link for 2027?
this is my favorite copypasta
it goes so hard
is there anyone who will be visiting?
I signed up for the admitted student visit and TASTE
Do they give travel grants
I believe so, for only selected students who demonstrates financial needs.
I would plan tho if what you want out of it
yea im visiting near the end of april
I never followed any school on any social media or anything
Or any class of 27 social medias
Only after getting acceptances I've bothered
northwestern still hasnt accepted my follow request😭
I didn't bother dealing with that
there was like a form they need to verify u got in or some thing
Once I figure out where I enroll I'll do that kinda stuff I suppose
@frozen crater
congrats! btw are u doingn masters for 1 or 2 years?
oh wait im stupid
i thought masters took 1 year tho so dont u graduate in 2024?
Did you get it?
nah
MS is 16 months + internship
is it for 1 years tuition? just curious lol
my dream grad school is cmu or mit lol
i never thought about it yet lol
achieve your dreams then ! cmu and mit are indeed the dream ^^
yea i ca nsend it
That sounds like 8 months (aka 2 years) where the summer is intern
did you get in
If i don't get out of the waitlist i will personally dig up carnegie's rotting corpse from his grave and chop off every part of his skeleton and put it all in a blender
Hey
I also made a big mistake overloading
And taking too many hard classes freshman fall
Overloading is a bad word until you know for sure what you're doing
did you get sucked into the more classes/less sleep gang?
Yea
Like I’m still cleaning it up now
Banks do
A good rule of thumb is never do more than 2 technical courses if you can at all avoid it
3 max
But my background >>> gpa
JS/Citadel will want 3.5++ for sure
damn
the internship?
Yeah
I think if u can just show ur smart they don’t care as much
yea i guess if you have experience then yea they can ignore it
yea
But I think CMU name helps
But better to have higher gpa
Than do what ur friends are doing
Im pretty sure some friends got desk rejected by JS for 3.5ish gpa
Bc my background especially for quant was the exception
without experience to show smart and stuff
I think was an outlier compared to most people during resume screening so didn’t care
But I’m struggling now to get interviewed for banks
yea i think banks wont make exception
But banks is annoying that’s so much networking involved
I do also realized that comparing to my Hs friends u learn a lot here
yea def
what courses count as technical?
all CS courses that aren't hci
what about math
depends on the class but most do count (sometimes takes less time tho)
ic thanks
the idea behind this is to limit your stress and info intake
so like linear algebra or calc might not count as a full technical course since it might take 8ish hours a week but something like concepts probably will
I agree and things like math finance algebraic structures passed 200+.
Get a bit harder too
When I first did concepts I legit pulled all nighters
Was horrible
tbh I think i spent 40h+ on concepts
a week
No i went home and slept freshman year, research sophie, intern junior
I’m wondering how hard CS summer courses are
double time ones are hell
I was thinking about taking like a CS course this summer and a stat
Course
Or is that suicide
is 122 a full sem now?
half semester
U can enroll in either
I’m wondering is it worth doing both simultaneously
Bc then I can do modern regression intro to ML and like real analysis
Fall
I also had some bad problem solving skills in coding
its doable
So I need to do more leetcode
Before I do 122
Especially if in summer with time constraint
uhh no
nothing to do with leetcode imo
you learn the leetcode help
no its more like theory
They have to make this easier
No way it can be that compressed
Like time intensively they have to be lenient somewhere I would hope
its like make a queue, stack etc
C0VM is the last hw and its to code up a C0 interpreter
Yeah
that’s brutal if it’s hard
Idk I’m used to procrastinating
And learning the entire content in 4days
Which isn’t good
Lmao
also btw you should verify on the server to give advice
Ah i see I’ll do that a bit later lol
Did u ever do real analysis
no. calc 3 was the last thing i took
did they release this year's stats
Yea
fuck
is concepts a required class? what reason did u guys have in mind when u signed up for it (since it sounds hellish😭) (also its concepts of mathematics right?)
why are you afraid?
🫡 dont wanna bite off more than i can chew
It's not as bad as it sounds. It's just the first hard class out of HS
For SCS you take it freshman fall
does CMU release stats on how many people get waitlisted and stuff
oh wait
CDS exists 🗿
CDS ?
common dataset
holy shit
i thought most cs courses were summer-all?
I would find 122 written 1 day + prog 2 day deadlines tough even now
That's what I thought too I thought they changed it to summer all because of how bad it is
I took 150 over summer 1 a few years back
and that was already rough
and ofc there's all those summer-all 213 kids
oof. That must be rough (i'm not even convinced that summer all 213 is harder than summer 1 SCS classes tho)
double time 150 or 122 is real bad
i know the common rebuttal is that you can just spend all your time focused on it as you likely won't have any other courses/obligations during that summer block
tbh I did 150 over zoom so it wasn't too bad -- lectures on a treadmill at home and all
but yeah i'd only recommend taking courses over the summer if you absolutely have to for graduation purposes or know the content already and just want to skip it
can you do another major at cmu if u got into the school of music?
I have the same question
Or can u reapply for interdisciplinary program? Is it easy to get into again
idt u can reapply
and i was just doing some research on it i think it may be pretty difficult to get another major at cmu do so, especially since they fill enrollment up with priority waiting list and other ppl like transfer so u might just not get the chance to add a major outside of ur school
tbh i might jus go to another school as i wanna study CS too and do a minor in music then
transferring to SCS is very difficult, but doable if you're super determiined
Makes sense
They have like 30 spots in interdisciplinary program it’s crazy
yes, but keep in mind music overlap will likely be little -- you'll have a lot of units to go through
no
No to you can’t reapply or no to it’s easy to get into
I was accepted school of music but mot offered admission to bha program
theres no such thing as reapplying -- do you mean transferring?
or denying admission and waiting until next application cycle
I think they just mean switching majors at CMU
thanks
its still not guaranteed tho right, theres a chance im not able to do it
yep there's def more barriers
but i will note graduating in general is also not guarenteed

I mean...
you defenitely can flunk
so better to go to a university where u got ur major u want
id say then
anways ive heard cmu cs is like insanely heard will be impossible to keep my gpa even a 3.0
eh not impossible
i was lookin on reddit a lot of ppl graduated below 3
more a function of the time you are willing to put in
yea i got into northwestern dual degree so im just checking if theres like no way i can do cs again at cmu
A lot of people also get over 3.75
if you're an annoying person like me who tries to maximize you hover exactly at the 3.0 average for cs courses
then you spend the rest of the time at the gym
oh dang for cs and music?
https://www.cs.cmu.edu/academics/resources/deans-list-fall2022.pdf <= See here for dean list last sem (note that around 200-250 is the class size per year)
if so thats insane u should go there
If I get up at 8 am and go to bed at 1 am, spending the entire day in lecture and studying can I get above a 3.5?
yea
1 pm or 1 am?
I ignored showering because that's not something engineers do
yea most likely will but cmu cs is def better so doesnt harm to check
Ambiguity 😭 1am
i'd say 1 pm would be a little bit difficult -- would prob have to do the same on weekends
yea but tbh i wouldn't risk doing any transfer of major when ur already set at a rlly good university
there is no need to spend 17 hours a day on just cs
Is it worth taking $160k of loan for engineering and cs minor at CMU
^Approximately 30*15 so maybe around 40-50% of cs students get 3.75 or above in a particular sem
Holy fuck
if you need 17 hours a day every to maintain a B+/A- average you shouldn't be studying cs at cmu ngl
that can't be healthy for the body and mind
I mean this depends on your alternative
ok ig so but like the ppl who get in are insanely cracked out of their minds
like usaco plats
(you forgot to factor in 6h+ of procastinating a day)
starting studying for 451 midterm at 6 pm the night before
after saying how dumb it was i did the exact same thing last midterm
👀 glgl if thats tmrw lol
Go to Purdue for 45K/year
no financial aids
also aren't u a sophomore?
doesn't qualify for any
i stg if i have to actually use my first drop voucher on this class im gonna be so angry with myself
isnt this also uh around 180k?
yeah
oh no junior
but I'll be 80k/year if I want to go to CMU
taking 451 senior year is zzz
i got in too but idk how good the opportunities will be as its in the middle of nowhere
fair
brb changing your tag so i also dont forget
oh yay i got promoted
anyways cs at cmu is much like running a very long distance -- it's more a battle of wills than of pure skill
Purdue CS 😩
wdym
to be fair taking 451 senior year (hopefully after you took 455 complexity theory for your Algo elective) can be chill
I got in for engineering, though I could always switch if I want to
i thought its good thou
uh yeah. I would spend less money
Assuming 160k is for 4 years and not per year
What do you want to do?
well mainly software
Do you like physics?
stay cs?
but i think hardware may be important too
it's like running marathons -- it's not theoretically challenging (in fact, it's rather straightforward -- just run at a good pace)
If you're coming to Purdue and want to do hardware do Computer Engineering
yea but its in college of science and like w engineering i believe there are more opportunities
if you take breaks, maintain healthy habits, and get help, you'll finish the race fine
There's exactly 1 hardware class at Purdue CS
hmm
i wanna do both so i was considering double major
but ive heard thats insanely hard
and its taken ppl 5 yrs
Minimum
Should I pursue a cs minor alongside an engineering major at CMU then
but while you're running you'll feel like shit and constantly want to quit the entire time, even when you're doing well
that's what running a marathon is like
and what being at cmu is like
🥲
Purdue CS in 3 is pretty easy, but that requires that you grind CS for each of those semesters. That is, not stacking ECE on top
idk purdue cs is a good option?
wb ece minor?
worth it at all
I got in Purdue engineering, not cs
Doing the ECE minor is pretty easy
i was talking to ppl in the purdue discord server
Much better option than double major

they said there was a major change form
Relative to the double major
hmm what would you recommend for the logics, software, and AI electives
I have databases + foundations of prog as the two for now but please tell me if thats a bad idea/might be better to take in the spring
Not in absolute terms
AI might just do intro to ml like everyone else
its either intro to ML or intro to AI
Purdue CompE is really good so that's an option
Highly would not reccomend clogic. that was pain
CODOing CS is tricky
is AI like a major though
is it better than cs?
ranking wise it is
but idk if should go off that
yeah, I'm seriously considering Purdue over CMU for that
they both literally get u the same software engineering job
oh yeah im just optimizing for ability to get a B + time needed to get that B
any reason what DB vs distributed?
no fancy things for me I'm re-recruiting in the fall for full-time
is purdue engineering better than cmu engineering
I mean, there's no way to determine that for sure. It depends on what you want to do and what you want to get out. If you just want to do SWE CS is probably better because it's very straight to the point
P similar
mmh not sure tbh -- would you recommend distributed?
I mean they are ranked equally at #4
uh huh
for undergrad
i thought that was grad school
Yeah, that's grad
i thought undergrad is #9
hmm yea
but would it be hard to switch from cs to comp e
the only thing i saw was that it would take an extra yr cuz of FYE
The requirements diverge pretty quickly
purdue is #9 while CMU is #7
In the first year if you're a CS major you're not taking physics or engineering classes
But that's a must for CE
oh dang i did not know that
wait
i thought cmu was like #1
Uhh i dunno, i just think distributed is more useful than DB for real world applications (like unless you work at a DB company when would you ever need to know how to make a db wheras distributed concepts are used more generally
that's fair -- supposedly DB was easier or so I heard? tbh doubtful I'll remember any of it anyways haha
ouch, i wanted to do popl concentration
I mean if you like it you like it lol
thats fair. I heard they were similarish but also i didn't think far ahead enough to have a choice lol (Senior spring Distributed lolol)
bro why is purdue cs #16 when thats more sought out
shouldn't that be higher than engineering?
Undergrad rankings are tough since there are not great metrics to compare undergrad success
@frozen crater hey sorry for pinging u but may u share ur extracurriculars and do u have any knowledge about the differences in acceptance rates for tepper vs scs
All good.
Highlights of my ECs:
- President of my school's debate team and national tournament qualifier
- President of my school's FBLA chapter -- brought it back from the brink after COVID
- Co-founder and director of an HS hackathon -- it was a small event, but we got students from multiple schools in the region
- Co-founder and president of a mobile apps company that's done ~30k in sales and has won some best app awards
[some other ones that are smaller (NHS, SHS, minor research)]
No idea abt the acceptance rates, but I found a source that had Tepper at 11% and SCS at 5% (no idea if these are true, CMU is somewhat reserved with the data it shares I think. Also, business is a slightly less competitive major than CS so that would also have an impact
Thank you so much for sharing :D
Yeah thats what I assumed about business and SCS
Im applying as business that's why I wanted to ask
Bro I got rejected from UNC, UPenn, NYU, UCLA…. And got WL CMU CS. Is today going to be horrible guys?

how hard is it to transfer into scs if i was admited for ece?
ty
it doesn’t mean anything in specific tbh like I got rejected/WL’d from all my targets but somehow got into a reach
Sorry if dumb question but how different are the job opportunities for ece vs cs. Not like the money/ availability but just as in what people do at their jobs
I see
Generally it depends on your ECE track
Fuck ivies
Tens of thousands of people are going to get rejected, probably mostly all rejected . There are hundreds of thousands of applications submitted and all 8 of them only let in about 21,000 kids total. All of them have sub 10 acceptance rates, and I think half have sub 5. Take into account ED and also just the demographic facts that you might not be something they need for the colleges to have their well rounded class". They're not looking for a second generation college kid from a very well educated state who's majoring in CS or Biology , they need a first generation kid from Wyoming who's doing education or Spanish.
You gotta understand the competition is ridiculously tight, tighter than a normal acceptance rate would lead to believe, and up to a certain tier ( which I believe most A2C kids are at), your decision comes down to a lot of luck and not because you wouldn't have been able to succeed at that school
They had a box last year, not sure if that changed
yoo is there a discord server for cmu co '27?
ye you can google it and theres a reddit post for it
ahh got it ty!
is it worth it to get into cmu wl or just commit somewhere else
i mean did u get off the waitlist
noo i havent even joined the wl yet
i mean u can do both
cmu even says u should commit somewhere else and then stay on the wl
wait so if u get in to cmu from wl do u have to go there?
or can u still go to the one u already commited to
oooo okay even the priority wl?
neither is binding
stay on all the waitlists/commit
unless you can't afford to lose the deposit
well if you're committed now to a diff school you would lose whatever that deposit is if you get off wl
then if you get off another after that you prefer to cmu you'd lose the cmu deposit
ahhh gotchaaa that makes sense
generally i think if you send a nice enough email they won't take all your money though
ohhh fr??
yeah i know people who said they were withdrawing because fin aid or loans didn't go through or smth
and wl only opens april 7 right
"sorry i got into a better school 🗿 can i have a little money back tho please"
feels a bit mean to take deposit back from ppl who cant go because they're too poor
ohhhh right
where u end up going ? ;)
Yea I’m gonna decline as well, gl waitlists
what major r u
Cfa
Probably gonna commit soon
Did anybody get a fly in offer yet?
nope
Vanderbilt if u wanna be happy lmao
For what major?
If it’s CS or Eng
CMU all the way
Ohh for CE
this is hilarious
what about price?
CMU CE is t10
i got fin aid so money is not really an issue
yeaaaa but idk what i should prioritize, social life or academics
i am also having that problem😭😭
if I could make a brief argument for cmu, i have to say that you can have a great social life while learning a lot
if what you mean by that is just having a close circle of friends, being involved in a lot of different clubs and school activities
i won't call myself the most social of people, but i could easily invite more than 50 people to my birthday party, of which all are pretty incredible people
if you're looking for nightlife, great restaurants in walking distance, or high class clubs and bars, this place isn't for you
If one doesn't apply for financial aid, do they still need to fill out the CSS profile and FAFSA?
why would you need to fill them out
to not get any money?
any tips on writing the CMU LOCI?
Has anyone gotten financial aid yet
huh didnt you get 2 ivies
focus on the tangible updates and additional achievements you've got since your application
wait whats the loci for?
yeah but CMU is still my dream school
kk gotcha
for waitlist
oh nice i hope you get it you got this fr
thanks
ohh ok really
icic
ah okok
icic
what if u did nothing 💀
wait is the waitlist open??
I think it opens on the 7th
ooo okay so i dont have to do anything before then?
yepp
leadership position at clubs, extended research, what did you do in the past few months outside of college apps and school? that kind of stuff
can I just tell them how I’ve taken an interest in sculpting recently 🗿
you can tell them anything, although imo it's best if it's an accomplishment
Does CMU have the waitlist prompt again this year?
CMU waitlist but even if it pulls through im committed to berkeley this year
yeah sure lol that might make for a fun read
Does anybody know when the fly in offers will be coming in? I asked a week ago and they said they would send it last week but I don’t think anyone has gotten anything
I havent recieved anything yet but some people at my school did
I asked them where they found it and they said idk
you can just choose their regular waitlist
What’s a fly in offer
Basically cmu pays for you plane tickets and accommodation to go visit the school
cool... do they give fly in offer (free plane tickets and acco) to all admitted students?
Idk bc i haven’t recieved one yet despite being admitted
hmm
CMU LET ME OFF THE WAITLIST PLZ
i also have the same inquiry
So why are you on the waitlist
what major
major?
electrical and comp engineering
let me off the waitlist cmu
Where are u going as of now
the hopium is so high
indeed i believe this random paragraph of text on the vast internet
50% seems wrong
comp eng 💀
everyone who is offered waitlist are given the two options
I don't think I was
damn
50% doesnt seem too good then
Priority is nonbinding that wouldn't even make any sense
Yeah I'm reading the letter they definitely didn't let me decide between priority and regular
"It is important for you to know that every year some students are successful in gaining admission from the
waiting list. Because of your qualifications, we are offering you the opportunity to be placed on our priority
waiting list. If you choose to participate in our priority waiting list option, you will be among the first
students admitted to Carnegie Mellon from the waiting list. "
interesting -- there's no choice between the two offered?
perhaps they've changed it
I mean I'm not sure if they might give me the option for either waiting lists, but to me priority wouldn't make any sense if everyone had the option to go to priority
yeah
i got this same line
that is always what I said, as well
show up to the next waitlist meeting and lmk what they say: https://admission.cmu.edu/portal/waiting_list_session
Have you signed up for this and have you gotten a confirmation email.
I signed up but I haven’t gotten anything
i'm a current student haha so I didn't sign up
i assume they'll send a zoom link the day of?
Wait so if priority waitlist is non binding why do you need to send the $800
I'm pretty sure that is to commit
was there anyone who didn’t get the option for priority waiting list in their decision letter
what percent of waitlist students do you think will select priority and what percent would select regular?
majority will probably select priority
so don’t put too much hope on the priority waitlist
they'd have to make decision within 3 days and pay $800, so why would majority select priority?
i think wl is also need aware
hows wl need aware?
should be above your admission decision
there’s a section with “now that you’re waitlisted” or something similar and it should have a button to view your financial aid letter
if u don’t see it then u might be missing some important document so send an email
Hi everyone! I got waitlisted by CMU, and I have some questions about the waitlist update. can anyone help me with this? I posted my concerns on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/12d8u7k/waitlist_cmu_ucla_nyu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
Thank you so much !!! 🙏🏻😭
yo post is toast
😭
Sorry I don’t quite get your meaning.
it was removed by the mods
according to the message it was because you had the word "help" in the title
Oh so sorry I’m gonna post it again. Or maybe can I send a screenshot of the post?
whatever floats ur boat
to answer ur 3 questions:
- I don't see what is the issue with being a nerd? cmu might be one of the nerdiest schools period :/ messy is a possible concern but that's on arrangement and execution, not the facts themselves
- yes to all.
- you have word counts on updates generally. if not, keep it under a page -- use that as guideline for how much to include
Thank you so much !!!
I called them and they just said they're behind on finaid
Like they don’t have much finaid left?
Or they do?
No they're just behind on processing
Where is the additional info prompt for priority waitlist?
I don’t think they have one
Oh ok
when does wl open?
April 7
ohhh okay so tmmr morning i sign up??
does it matter if i sign up on april 7 or april 8?
It doesn't matter, I don't think they even start looking until the due date, May 1st
ohhhh okay bettt
wait is there even a waitlist updates form or what
hi, are you thinking to pick CMU over Cornell?
Yes
cool.. Cornell is an Ivy and ranked #4 in CS
Couldn't care less about Ivy branding or rankings
bro just take the ivy and leave some for the rest of us xd
4?
I'm pretty sure it can't be higher than 5 considering there are Stanford, MIT, CMU, Berkeley
Splitting hairs
Waitlist MFs out here making sure others don’t choose cmu lmaooo
does cmu take locis
lmao same thing happening to me
dont choose cmu guys! a friend of mine told me the school is bad! commit somewhere else ❤️
no
i lowk wna try emailing them
👎
dayum wtf
real?
bro i had to put that i like sculpting now in my update form cause i had nothing else 💀
cmu '27 looking more and more like a dream...
does anyone know where to find the waitlist update form on the cmu portal?
is this true
what if i send them a loci anyway
also, do yall know how likely it is to get in if youre on the priority waiting list?
