and its applications as well as enhance my insight via Emory’s separate courses.

I’ve always enjoyed creative projects, from the kid taking courses in robotics and doodling
futuristic car designs to the teenager designing casts for cerebral palsy patients and building
miniature catapults. I noticed CRISPR when researching genetically modified babies. Intrigued by
biomedicine’s capabilities, I participated in a Q&A with a CRISPR/Cas-9 scientist and read up on
various projects such as those at Emory Mouse Core; I imagined the genetic and developmental
projects I could study alongside embryologist Dr. Nitsche.

However, “We are now using CRISPR to generate mutant mice” plastered on the Core’s website
gave me pause. Though I’d love to explore genetic alterations in mice models, I wonder about the
sociological perspective. Ethical study is necessary to minimize negative societal pushback with
almost all advances in engineering or medicine, and at Emory, I know I’d be able to depend on the
