I'd definitely ED then b/c they will let you out of the agreement if that is an issue. Also, most everyone I know got some sort of large merit scholarship upon receiving their acceptance letter, so expect a decent amount off the tuition amount. Check their average net cost, and that is near what you can expect to pay.

I like to do 3 threes in my "Why?" essays. I look at the school as a whole, the department I am interested in, and then the program that I'm looking at specifically. I first discuss why I am interested in my degree field and connect that to the program that I'm looking into specifically. Then, I research that department very specifically to try and find unique and/or cool things about it that are different and/or special versus other schools. Finally, I usually close off with a paragraph about the school. I recently wrote about the unique level of access to business programs I get as an engineering student at UW-Madison (funding, certificates, minors, and classes). In that last paragraph, I make it a point to exemplify through what and how I am writing that I fit into their institutional ideology towards learning. Sometimes it works to quote some part of it or to talk about it specifically, but at the very least you need to exemplify it in what you're writing about and how your demeanor towards it.

Every college is different. However, UIUC engineering is amazing and it shows that even if you didn't get into case western it doesn't impact your ability to become a very good engineer.
