birb is right, you're basically paying the cost of a private school for a public school education
Yea
If you have the pres go to USC because it’s cheaper
UCLA and USC are head to head tho tbh
Is Berkeley > USC and UCLA?
I know in terms of national and international reputation I’ve heard of Berkeley a lot more
It’s not that simple
Obv yeah it depends on major
But in terms of just reputation and results
Yea UCB has a stronger rep for sure
Like which of the three are placing kids into Ivy grad schools and top firms?
Genuinely curious, not sure
Wait I phrased that question wrong
It’s definitely all three
I should’ve used the words “more frequently”
Lol
I have pres and viterbi scholarship for usc
but idk I kinda like UCLA a lot too
I think both are good
If you have the finances dw about anything
Choose wherever you want
ended up commiting to usc
i think its a very tough decision between ucla tho
hopefully i dont regret it lol
Definitely not
It would have been a difficult decision for me if the costs were anywhere near eachother
I was in ur same position lol, ended going to ucla, hopefully I don’t regret it
Only thing I dread is the quarter system
HI BESTIESSSS HAPPY (late) COMMITMENT DAY!!!
I decided to take a break from studying for finals and pop in to see if any of my newest trojans had any questions they wanted to ask a current student!! (pls ping to make sure I see it)
I'm also a transfer student so if y'all have any questions on that I'm happy to answer!
is there a birnkrant insta gc and a usc disc anyone can add me to?
invited you to usc disc
can i get invited to usc disc as well?
Hey @crisp halo!! I have a question. Will withholding my AP exam score have an effect on my matriculation. I'm scared because I know I'm going to get a really bad score on one of the tests.
Lmao no you’ll be completely fine
Anyone heard back off appeal?
They should be released around the end of next week
what level math is the placement test?
I heard precalc
Wait, should I even with hold it iff it doesn't matter?
It won’t affect matriculation, just whether or not you get credit. So it doesnt hurt at all to just send it in anyway
I have like a 95% in AP stats but probably got like a 1-2 on the test, only because the teacher was very easy but very bad. It wont seem off?
if you got a 1-2 I wouldn’t submit. It wont hurt and it definitely wont count for credit so might as well just hold it
Ok I won't, thank you
Ofc!! Congratulations again and I hope we run into each other in the fall!
Yeah definitely!! Thank you for all the help these last few months!
@crisp halo can u explain how the new computing school gonna work? Is it like basically pulling all cs out of viterbi and into it's own school?
Since this is still a new development, I would recommend checking out this website https://computing.usc.edu/ for all up to date info. From what I understand though (and I haven't gotten any official notices from my supervisors so this is all my own understanding) is that USC is basically creating a new division within Viterbi that combines all aspects of CS with more ethical/entrepreneurial/innovation based practices.
ok thanks
Appeal decisions in a few days
lfg friday so nervous
cant wait to get into usc so i can spend 91k a year in be in crippling debt for the rest of my life
mine just came out but no good news
how would y’all rank things as importance for usc admission?
like gpa ecs essays test scores?
essays > ecs > gpa > test scores but that's just me
imo usc admissions have been very well-rounded and people with not the best stats have had lots of success getting in
but i'm just basing that off my limited sample size
gotchu gotchu
that gives me a lot of stress relief 💀
imma stop focusing on that stuff and lock in on the little things like ecs and finals
i’ll focus on that big picture stuff in the summer
thanks bro
🙏🏽
I’d say ecas>gpa>essay>test scores
You don’t necessarily have to worry about test scores since they’re test optional, but ecas are very important
I didn’t have to write any essays, I have no clue why but those short answers are also important
It should just send automatically when you purchase the score send?
It will say pending for q while
its been like that since december :(
anyone know the average gpa of a regular decision admit?
3.9 I think?
💀
real
how much are ap scores valued?
I would look up “USC Common Data Set” to get an idea of what they consider
hello!!!!
yall
i decided to go to UNC
i cant afford USC :((
wished I could but eh fuck it
been nice talking to y'all !!
At least you didn’t choose UCLA like this guy!
Hey I’m not the only one on this server who chose ucla over usc 😂😂😂
Just trying to get the target off my back
Target confirmed 🐻🔫🦫
Awww that’s such a cute bruin bear!
Guys don’t kill him
He loves you all 💙💛
He just wanted t20 prestige, the beach, and the global studies program at UCLA
UCLA is such an L
they sent me their admission package just today
I have a bunch of friends going to ucla and usc
does getting differed to regular decision lower chances of admission?
Not necessarily, it just means the admissions officers wanted to look at your app in the context of the wider pool of applicants
I believe the admit rate for ea is a lot lower than rd
ahh gotchu
i’m just questioning wether to apply ea cus I heard somewhere that it’s easier to get in if u just apply rd than to apply ea and get differed to rd
might have been some dubious advice tho so idk
if u can apply ea apply ea
no questions asked
u need to apply ea for merit scholarship consideration
this is a somewhat popular belief
the students who get in EA are typically students they want to or have considered for scholarships
and it is shown that in most cases, non-binding ea deferral is considered a bad thing in comparison to kids who apply RD
so ur saying if I don’t think my application is good enough to get accepted ea
then I should apply rd?
i would not recommend that
because to be fair theres no sure shot way of knowing if your application is 'good enough to be accepted' ea
i would recommend applying EA (I did) because it qualifies you for scholarship consideration
but ea deferrals are considered quite grim
gotchu gotchu
😟
based on my application
I have strong act
very strong ecs
pretty good essays
mid gpa
how would you characterize mid?
3.7-3.8
for reference point, my GPA was definitely among the weakest part of my application
how does your school convert that to a weighted scale
had dubious grades sophmore year for a good reason
but junior year wasn’t amazing
had a few bs
remember USC does consider dips for grades and explanations
i have a 4.2 w
and grades are not a make or break
thats great!
yeah but the recalculate gpa tho
with strong academics you shoul.dnt worryt about that b eing a limiting factor on your application
to be unweighted
again USC does tend to compare you to your class and how you fare up against other students
a few Bs here and there dont break your application
oh i’m def top 10%
especially if it can be explained
okay then dont worry about your gpa you are fine on that regard
focus on ensuring you are able to display why USC is a great school choice for you
💯
that doesnt matter USC will be able to calculate how well you fare compared to your school's history and current students
ahhh gotchu
USC is a very school spirited school. If your application shows why you would belong there, you are quite likely to get in
so will they compare me with my class or people who previously got accepted from my school
For reference point I had a shitty application season. I got rejected/waitlisted from all my safetiesi and targets aside from one (i applied to 33 schools total)
but I got into USC and heard from the Dean how much they look at supplements
a mix of all. remember usc doiesnt pick students who are the top of their class. they look at your entire context as a way to learn more about you
you are not a part of their quest to find the highest gpa. your gpa is a part of their quest to learn more about you
one of my ecs fits very very well with one of uscs labs
and that is a main driving factor on why i wanna go
so hopefully they see that
but i have to show that in my essays
very well said
Great! make that show in your application!
i would recommend getting in touch with people at the lab. im only prefrosh atp but all the staff ive spoken to have been very supportive
I was thinking about writing about it as my common app
feel free to send cold emails etc to learn more
and then going into depth on why usc would want me at their school based on my experience in that thing on the why us
to like usc?
do remember the Common App essay tends to be a more personal outlet for you to show a more centric part of you and not your ec/previous work
to labs and resources yep
p[rofessors are often quite easy to find and email
true
it wasn’t going to be really just my ec
it’s hard to explain
but it’s gunna be more about my growth than the ec
i dont pretend to be a master at the cae process
CAE = common app essay
but
I think my best advice is
write what feels true to you
and reflects what you think is important to you
ty 🙏🏽
NP! dms are always open
thanks!
Dw I was panicked about this because I had a rough junior year with legitmate reasoning not just because it was junior year and it worked out
has anyone here got accepted to viterbi with a gpa in the 3.7 range
i know of a few people who got into viterbi with 3.7 gpa
thank god
I had a 3.9 and got rejected so you never know
