#UCLA 🐻🐻🐻 (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 12 of 1
Columbia has a Data Science institute 😭
why did u defer meeeeee
why don’t u want meeeeee
defer is not bad
Eh whatever; I probably wouldn’t appreciate the Core as much as others. Prob not a good fit
you still have chance
my friend at ucla is doing ml/data science research at a big tech company part time during school as an undergrad
so
My AO has not responded to a single one of my emails
nice
it definitely wouldn't matter tooo much
I interned with someone awhile ago who currently does UCLA CS and does a lot of ML. He’s done JIFRESSE with JPL
Yale’s CS is known to be incredibly mid and not rigorous. But I guess it’s Yale…
yale is a liberal arts school
why'd someone wanting to do CS/DS go for yale vs UCLA/CMU/etc
again it's yale
yea
i didn't apply yale
the name
Prob just for the prestige lol
hmm
Wolverine did u apply to cal
are you guys thinking grad school already?
hmm many DS majors even go for PhD
I’m pretty sure only like 10% do
and they get paid like top dollars
Hmm
Don’t think it’s really useful unless you go more of a research route
You can plan for it
Find employment after Master’s
My friend was planning for a Ph.D.
but he started just doing shit and now he won't need to
yeah but I specifically mean research
Master’s so you’re not screwed if a job doesn’t work out
either DS, MLE, or research engineering
ya there are lot of common courses between CS and DS
I mean DS is like CS+Stats
ya
Ofc, because you have both
AYO I GOT GOOGLE BARD ACCESS
LETS GO
Yolo
yay
CS32 honestly was better than i thought it would be (like less work-ish, especially after i heard how much work project 3/4 were lol). super well-taught and projects were p fun
r u cs major as well?
fwiw i went ucla over GT cs and an ivy, for me it was mostly the in-state tuition diff + im not too interested in business/founding a startup or anything
yea
which ivy? jc
oh nice! what classes have u liked so far / which have been painful for u lol
yale
oh sheesh nice
tbh 32/33 were the worst
180 was the most fun so far
most interesting and applicable for sure
yeah 180 seems super fun
i don't care for low-level anything so 33 sucked
how about 35L? doing that with 33 next quarter 🥹
i thought it was fine
just don't expect an A
be pleasantly surprised
bc of his curve
and the stupid exams
eh its fine
just be happy if you get a 60
he doesnt really curve final grades so assume that a majority of everything else is free but exams are 60%
How hard is the term system? Like is it actually so bad or people are exaggerating?
term system is fine - you can take more courses and get more breaks in between
i like it
You just have midterms like every few weeks lmao
How hard is it to switch from math to Econ or vice versa in ucla
Yes people got it already
Just switch during orientation
Should be fairly straightforward
I know one person from a discord as well
That’s it
It’s very few people anyway
So you probs won’t find them online
ic, which ones are hard to switch into?
major wise
Majors in other schools are “more difficult” but not too hard
Obv if it’s like film or theater that’s different
rlly?
i thought for ucla and berk u have to do wtvr major u get in for
and transfer into cs or eng is like close to impossible
💀
😳
🗿🗿
So if you have a good gpa and take appropriate classes u could transfer into cs??
💀
🥵🥵
What is it like for Berkeley then can you change major within same school (LS) for example
👍🏻
would yall rather go to ucla or uiuc cs?
cuz ucla is better overall but uiuc has the stronger cs program
uiuc
Ikr!
Any other oos students here trying to make a deicison between their cheaper in state and UCLA? If so, what are you all thinking off to make this decision?
What’s ur in state?
^
guys would you choose ucla (32k coa for me) or gt (19k coa) i literally can’t choose
im ga instate but i qualify for ca instate as well
business / economics major
easily UCLA
Anderson is near the top for business and econ
depends on what your major is imo
opinions on Neuroscience at UCLA? Is it really difficult?
(I know there are many challenging and hard classes but like as a whole is it a major I should reconsider doing if I am a pre-med)
idk how it is at ucla specifically but neuro as a major is difficult at nearly every school. definitely one of the safer premed majors (when it comes to med school acceptances) but if you’re looking for an easier premed major neuro probably isn’t the one
i have quite a few med school friends and ≈60% of them got in with neuro. there’s a handful of bio and chem and psych majors but for the most part, neuro seems to be the strongest for med school acceptance
if you think you want to become like a neurologist or a neurosurgeon then 100% neuro as your major but if you’re thinking of a different specialty then neuro might not be necessary
I agree with Ryan
has anyone received their ucla accept packet yet
not yet either but my friend just got hers in so i wanted to make sure i wasn’t the only one
yea she lives in like sd
nothing yet but i’m also not committed officially
I live in SD and got my acceptance package too it might just be regional idk
ASU, with near full ride bc merit
how much is UCLA OOS even
oh geez
but the thing is that, UCLA undergrad students don't technically study under Anderson, Anderson doesn't provide an undergrad degree, the biz-econ major is still under the Letters and Science College
wait, how do you do this?
True but there’s def crossover in terms of faculty
It happens all the time at universities
A grad school professor or student might teach an undergrad class for a semester
Then you try to do well in that class and network
It definitely happens
yeah there are undergrad anderson classes
not for biz econ tho
but
||if you get in the good graces of anderson professors, they will let you take mba classes ;)||
you'd have to have a permanent place of living in california and live there during the summer / establish residency
hey for those of you who got accepted: did you get a letter from the chancellor alongside your acceptance letter?
for sure, but in terms of getting what most consider a business degree (more like a management degree), they don't really provide one. Now, that kind of doesn't matter, what matters is whether that actually impacts job opporunity and recruitment. My main concern is whether UCLA has dedicated solid opportunites for finance/consulting (I don't really know).
what does this even mean
It depends on your other options, tbh
UCLA has a fair amount of people go to MBB consulting + top IB every year
not as many as say Wharton but still a fair amount
BUT you have to be on top of your shit
I'm thinking IU Kelley. IU has really dedicated resources and places a lot obviously
I just wonder if UCLA has programs that aren't "overcrowded" or competed over my too many people as it's a pretty big school.
I would say UCLA over IU Kelley any day
Why? I'm not disagreeing, I just don't really know
I got two letters
1 personalized acceptance letter w my name and major
Another letter addressed “dear future bruin” from the office of the chancellor
Results are going to be better for basically any facet of business, you'll be around motivated people
Being around motivated people will help you be more prepared all while having fun
didn't get that but that sounds exciting!! was it in your portal or email?
i got it mailed to me physically
it was in my acceptance package btw
whoops I should have mentioned that before
kelley has 2k kids 💀
Yeah UCLA biz econ is def smaller
I'm currently choosing between marshall and kelley and class size is one factor making me lean heavily towards marshall
however kelley's cheaper
nvm everyone gets it , ignore me haha
yeah biz econ was pretty cool but I got waitlisted unfortunately
yeah i really look forward to it
I'm waiting on penn umich and cal too though rn
ohhh i see that makes more sense. i guess i'll have to see when mines arrives. ty and congrats !
I feel this is a pretty weak argument because it's really who you choose to surround yourself with at either university. both will have ltos of driven peers
Posts/Threads like this scare me- (and I've seen lots like them on reddit/wso)
I'm not even that interested in IB. I'm more interested in quant and consulting
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/economics-at-ucla
article from feb 2022-
https://dailybruin.com/2022/02/12/the-quad-lack-of-undergraduate-focused-business-education-proves-challenging-for-bruins
Consulting and quant are both increasing at ucla
quant isn’t represented at IU at all tho
if that’s your question
true
We get an increasing amount of McK and Bain with a lot of BCG each year
That sounds promising. What major are you in and how's your experience with job opportunites, recruitment, career stuff in general been at UCLA?
Apart from career stuff, how's UCLA been for you?
also, I'm just putting this here for myself but thought it may be useful to anyone-

also stuff like this post-

though there is an insightful comment countering OP in that thread
Wait, can you tell me more about this? My family and I have been really interested in doing this but we haven't been able to nail down any specifics. Are the requirments strict?
yeah they're pretty strict
there's some deadlines
you have to switch your legal residence i think a year?
before
366 days in California by the first day of classes in which you're declaring residency
You need to have intent to stay
so if we start this process right now, we wouldn't be able to get cali in state tuition for first year, but by the second year onward we'd be good?
You need to be financially independent if your parents aren't in CA
and citizen/permanent resident of the U.S.
or qualifying visa
yeah
basically
you can also do it quarter by quarter
wait, what does being "financially independent" entail
if your parents don't live in CA you have to show proof of income
so. you will have to make enough during the year to prove that you don't need your parents financial support
dang, that sounds kinda tough as a freshmen college student
yeah that's why it's a condition lmfao
they either want your whole family to move to ca or for you to be independent in CA
so do most people doing this get some sort of on campus job or other part time job?
most people don't do this
oof
Is it possible? I need to try but I don’t want to waste my time
committing to ucla 😇
if you plan to make over $30k a year I'd say it could be
otherwise no if your parents are not moving to cali
OMFGGGG YESSSS PERFECT
I will be paramedic so yes over $30k
much over
how do I claim independence
file taxes alone
can I just do that
All I have to do is say I’m independent? Lol
it's a lot easier if you have an on-campus apartment vs dorm
since you need a residence
but if you're willing to put a dorm as your permanent residence then i guess you can
Bruh I can’t LEAVE Cali for 366 days
also "If you’re an unmarried undergraduate under the age of 24 and your parent(s) are not California residents, you must be able to verify financial independence for the two full years immediately preceding the term you wish to enroll. Graduate students are presumed to be financially independent unless they were claimed as a dependent on their parents' federal tax return for the most recent tax year."
two full years
TWO YEARS
of financial independence
nah u can leave
you just have to be resident for 366 days
hmmmm
maybe I can make this work
$71k a year is so much
oh right
I’m deferring acceptance a year
so next year I’ll make like $35k ish
and then when I get paramedic license
It’ll be more
and then I go back to UCLA
I can’t find a program <1 year in Cali
but I’m also bad at googling
and I’d prefer to do it in NY
it has to be <1 year because I need to like ask UCLA to let me defer my acceptance and that’s easier if it’s <1 year
or just before sept 2024
hmmm
wait, so if I get a job for 30k/year over freshmen and sophmore years and file taxes, would it be possible
to have instate tuition for junior + senior year?
idk ab the 30k number
u have to demonstrate financial independence
Wait I’m already instate but if I can make 30k/yr freshman year can I qualify for more financial need-based aid sophomore year and up?
Because right now I’m getting nothing for need-based aid, but if I were to pay for everything myself, would they still factor in my parents incomes or just mine?
In terms of business programs, which school is better, ucla or usc
Iirc UCLA is better education USC is better placement (but don’t quote me on this)
If your goal is grad school/getting an MBA, which school would you say offer more opportunities
It’s about the same man
Go wherever is cheaper
USC might have a slight edge but not by that much
it depends if you're legally independent or emancipated
this
if i get promoted usaco silver->gold do u think its smth worth putting on ucla loci
i have a bunch of tiny things im not sure if theyre worth mentioning
ive heard the quarter system at UCLA is horrible]
24/7 stress
hello do u attend university of california los angeles
yessir
omg is that michael
nice lmao
i have been at peace with my rejections
any motivating waitlist success stories?
You mean Pre businesses and econ?
no i’m business admin at gt and prebus econ at ucla
Same.
Xd
I will choose Ucla over GT
If nothing else happens
me too lol
Yay just got the letter
congratulations!
thank you!
🎉 in state?
yes
UCB >>>
did u get the sticker too? congrats!!
UCB<<< shit school I wanna get in just to lower their yield rate
UCLA CS has no point
3.8% acceptance rate for a barely T20 CS Program when you have 5 other colleges in the same vicinity with better outcomes for CS
i mean even viterbi is better fr
anything apart from CS, UCLA is great
but for CS, hell no
Computer Science Open Rankings is a meta ranking of four individual computer science rankings covering universities in the United States.
collation of all relevant ranking parameters
nah this is only US and Canada
and canada has only 2 schools
uoft and waterloo
which are relevant
UCSD is pretty much on par just that UCSD culture is wack
its a good CS program, just that its too selective for the quality of the program
CSE is legit more selective than harvard
CSE acceptance rate is 3.1%
plus if you take OOS then it is sub 1%
MIT is 5% in EA
hmm fair but berk cs is the best program in the country
at par with mit stan and cmu
hmm
i may have some bias cause I got into GT but rejected from UCLA
for cs
wait @worn pelican you CS at UCLA?
wait lmao we are actual opposities
opposites*
demn
waitlist
lmaooo you instate or what
anyways CMU is depression land
for UCs
hmm if you were OOS for UCLA CS that would be insane
but instate UCLA CS is still goated imo
sub 3% rate and all
not really, I got into UCSD
others i got in for Pol Sci or Comp Eng
I think ill get berk tom
hoping for eecs but l&s will do
yeah bro wrong place
berk eecs is the dream though
only stanford is better imo
no one gets into mit lol
im an asian intl male in cs
Does UCLA have impacted majors?
yes
all of the UC's have impacted/capped majors
Is there a list? Trying to figure out if Data Theory is one.
is GT really that good?
gt is generally considered one of the best for engineering/cs
im sure there is, but I'm not sure where
you can email UCLA and they should know
oh i see.. i thought UCLA is better even for CS
yeah also gt has nothing you could compare for humanities bcs it just doesnt exist lol
ah ok.. how about for pure CS/tech jobs in FAANG, which school is better?
I believe its gtech
gt for sure, its a target school
its a t5 cs school ofc its a target
not like a2c target
no like target in the sense that gt feeds to big tech
Lol
yep
Majority of freshmen are in triples right? Could’ve sworn I saw that at some point on the housing website
Anyone know what that’s like? Feels like it’d be kinda cramped
UCLA PLEASE LET ME GET A PLAZA OR DELUXE DORM :C
Is there an admitted students discord?
mhm
I can send you the link if you'd like
anyone have to report course changes?
like dropping a course?
has anyone heard back?
@dawn dew do u have to fill accomodations ou t soon
Could you send aswell?
Bro idk
Once I commit lmfao
okok
Yes please!
sent to DMs!
Thanks
Did they approve it yet
And if they did when did you report it
Nervous for a friend LOL
Wtf
My friend sent in 3/17
No resonse yet
💀
Did u drop a class or
Ah lower level or
I will die
😭
Okok
your friend
Oh shit
bruh I dropped from AP lit to normal English but I’m a physics major and I told them I dropped it in my supp q
I submitted mine 3/17
damn
yes
are they still open
oh they’re not even open yet
I forgot pst
Perfect
ye
yeah i did basically as soon as the letter came out and i heard back and was fine but i had a pretty minor change
@worn pelican what number did u call
@dawn dew is stupid
she cant find it
help us
tysm ily
If I wait until May 1st to commit that’s probably a bad idea right?
Since the roommates stuff needs to get sorted earlier?
Trying to figure out a deadline for myself lol
Will it be bad that I dropped an advanced college math class as a prospective math/physics major? The professor had to get pretty extensive surgery(and there were no replacements) and told us to withdraw from the class during the refund/drop deadline.
if you report it asap should be fine
you had no choice in this case
nope that's fine
what status change did you request?
ohk.. senior year class schedule?
i'm thinking if i should also update my class schedule to UCLA and Berkeley?
whats the process to update the schedule
i see, ok
whats the point of updating if you got in already lol
congratulations
everyone pls turn down ucla i need to get off that waitlist
ucla's the only good school that accepted me 😭 just go to usc
anyone got into both berkeley and ucla?
on god
cool, did you get into ivies too?
Just Cornell
which major? which one are you thinking then - ucla, berkeley or cornell?
I’m thinking Berkeley or USC
For international relations
yes pls turn down cornell
why not cornell?
Bc Cornell isn’t as good at international relations
USC and Berkeley are 👑
hmm
Are you on the Cornell WL or something?
What school though?
a&s
which college
Public policy
i see
is it worthing sending a loci for wl or nah(asking for sb, la, and sd)
honestly I would. It wouldn’t hurt to, tbh
yo can you send me the link too?
you could you send it to me ty 🫶
Probably going to either UC Berk or UF
does ucla have a data science major
It has “Data Theory,” which is comparable to DS
in their own words, the Data Theory major lays a “foundation of data science”
NAH BRO COME USCCCC
Damn usc out of the picture
USC costs too much
Damn right it does Tom Buchanan
usc cringe
is there a ucla discord
.gg/ucla @river urchin
Rejected from all schools except UCLA
same!!
UCLA diff
it’s okay ucla’s got our backs
Yessir
have yall gotten ur financial aid packages yet i still havent gotten mine aspdfhpasdf
is the UCLA hookup spreadsheet open yet?
wth is that LMFAO
its not rly a thing g
like ive scrolled through their spreadsheet
bro what 💀
do u get notified whether u got out or not for the waitlist
WHAT
the tabs at hte bottom
do you go to ucla
@north copper is typing
say what you wanna say
yes my g
Is it harder to get into like film or art as a transfer than as a freshman for ucla
It depends on what your transferring from. CC to UC, private to UC, or UC/CSU to UC
Cc to uc
I read somewhere that atleast for architecture it’s 80% transfer rate from within ucla but outside it’s single digits
Architecture is offered only from junior year at ucla
Yes
It’s somewhere on the ucla sub
bro ive heard mad things about that
I guess my purity score will rapidly go down if I decide to come here
Currently deciding between UCLA CS and GT CS. I know GT is higher ranked, but is there a sizable difference in terms of career opportunities? I’m mainly interested in swe and quant/trading
Any UCLA discord?
touring ucla today :)
is there a ucla '27 server? can send me invite?
Can someone help me with my UCLA waitlist update? I posted this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/12d8u7k/waitlist_cmu_ucla_nyu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
Thank you so much !!! 🙏🏻😭
can someone also dm me a ucla '27 server?
yeah i got u
can someone sent it to me too 😁
Hi everyone. I’m so sorry I don’t mean to spam here, but I couldn’t post on reddit(I was banned on Reddit, probably because of duplicative posts>well that’s because they removed my posts). I seriously need advice and I would really appreciate your help! Thank you so much 🙏🏻😭
pick like the top 3
some of them seem to overlap and it gets kinda repetitive
do you just email them your updates?
On their portal they do have a section to accept the waitlist( then you can type your updates in the reply box).
oh
comitted 🧘
makes me wonder how you got in without knowing how to spell
If you just write I hate USC on all four piqs you’re guaranteed a spot
I think FUSC also works
That’s hate speech Tom
You should know better
i think tom would know. it seemed like it worked for him
It did.
The weird thing is...
It worked for Berkeley too...?
I didn't realize the Bay Area peeps didn't mess with USC either...?
Should’ve done 2 piqs fusc 2 piqs f Stanford tbh
Then that covers you for both bases
well i guess fusc some how covered both...
Berkeley doesn’t mess with USC either
I feel like Berkeley is in its own little bubble
can someone dm me ucla27 server
Columbia CS vs UCLA CS?
send me too please 🙏🏻
DAILY UCLA CS SLANDE
columbia cs anyday
ucla cs is frustratingly shit its appaling
we love highschoolers who aren't even in college making evaluations of college programs they never participated in 🤩
What he means is Cal has a stronger reputation for CS
Mate I'm a college student
And I have been through the application process
And I have stated my opinion after researching about the course and columbia is much better than ucla for cs
Sounds good bro
'27
College student
yeah this ain't true whatsoever
UCLA has more variance but at the top I'd say there's more positive outcomes at big tech than Columbia lol
Never met anyone from Columbia at any of the big co's I've worked at
LMFAO
bro then you aint working at the top companies 💀
and you are?
What specific industry have u worked in?
mmm i’m not sure about that
high tech
like the highest cap tech companies you can think of
Bro just sit down 💀
one of the most elitist conversations i’ve ever had the displeasure of reading
true a2c banter
Do u think it's bc private schools tend to be smaller
And thus less represented
Also Columbia kids prolly go to fintech
I don't think so, I've met people from a number of equivalent private schools (Penn, Princeton, Stanford, etc.) too
🙃
blame cs
unfortunately some high schoolers don't just trust the college students who have gone through multiple recruiting processes and internships...
Just wondering, how represented is sjsu in the companies you've worked in
And berkeley
berkeley a lot
i think sjsu's high-performers end up at big tech companies
otherwise a lot will end up at mid-size or startups since proximity to the bay
more tapped into the scene
which isn't necessarily a bad thing
💀🗿
what ab la?
if i double major in cogsci computational specialization + lingcs at ucla hows the job opportunities at tech look like
or is it basically exclusive to cs majors
why would you double major in both
this is basically just repetition
two very very similar majors
i would say ling-cs has better recruiting power bc cs in the name. doesn't differ in results from normal cs
bc im genuinely interested in linguistics and lingcs also gives me more options for cs courses
like for example
atp just do ling-cs and take extra psych classes u like
im trying to make the equivalent of stanfords symbolic systems w linguistic and cs focus
yeah either would get you there
i was admitted for cogsci which is also like the main thing i want to study 😭
cog sci lets you take more options for upper divs
but tbh ling-cs has better recruiting potential if that's what you're worried ab
hmm ok
which lets u do priority for cs dept classes
personally
switch to ling-cs
take the cog sci classes u want
i looked at the course load i would have to take if u were to do cogsci and lingcs and it’s honestly not even that bad
once u get an internship switch
how is the math/economics major at ucla?
ah ok
major name realllly doesn't matter
i understand what u mean
ok
you're gonna have requirements in both you don't want to take basically
so doing one lets you avoid at least a few
i just got a little worried bc i heard a lot of jobs/opps are closed to u if u don’t have a straight cs degree
ye good point
depends what ur doing
ah
makes sense
is this easier for lingcs compared to cogsci?
yeah
tbh i don’t even enjoy coding that much anymore
but the money yk
esp for entry job
you can get the money in other roels
roles*
that being said you have to dedicate a lot more bc there are just so many software engineering positions
yeah true
the thought process between double majoring was that there’s a ton of overlap and it’s two closely related subjects so it shouldn’t feel too different
and it’s only a bit more work + gives me the lingcs degree alongside cogsci
which opens more doors right
no
tbh
the only thing that will matter is what your major says it is when you're recruiting for internships
if you're going to grad school major matters even less and it's more ab the classes you take
could u clarify on this
yeah but if they see lingcs w cogsci that’s better than j cogsci right
again depends what you're recruiting for
and how you phrase stuff
if you put down "Cognitive Science with a specialization in Computer Science" vs "Cognitive Science with a specialization in Computing" it acc makes a big difference
ok that makes sense
that's why it's called computing 💀
if you do that then take the CS3x series though don't take the PIC series
emphasis on computing = same classes as lingcs
nope not the same
not really
i made a spreadsheet w the stuff on it
PIC are not the same, then you have to take upper divs but it's overall less CS classes
if you do CS3X series then your. upper divs, maybe 2-3 less classes?
not sure exact ## I don't know too much about computation
yeah but also you need specific individual amount of units
for some majors
like you need X amount of units exclusive to one major or the other
oh yeah
i need one more lingcs class than i had on the spreadsheet i remember thinking about that
i think it’s silly tho that it’s not called specialization in cs and is instead specialization in computing when lingcs has essentially the same cs courses
and is called compsci
it's bc it's nto taught by the CS department
it's taught by the computing department
which is math
and also has worse professors
yeah
but also you can't take
CS dept
upper divs
Without taking the lower divs
They'er pretty strict
Some ppl ik went back to take CS3x
lingcs prerequisites are cs 30 series
yeah
so that’s the diff ig
yeah it does according to some ppl on reddit
it’s whatever
i’ll figure this out eventually it’s still so early
yeah
anyways my advice is make it easier for. yourself early on
lets you take up new stuff you're not expecting
that’s definitely a good idea tysm
tmrw right?
11:59 PM PST
what's the discord link for the ucla school discord server?
have fun at bruin day 💔💔
campus is so chaotic
I feel bad for the people at sproul we were so invasive like wtf we didn’t need to see in the dorms give them privacy
did anyone who went to bruin day today and got a "bruin or bust" pin willing to sell it?
i unfortunately didn't know that the admissions tent was giving out swag, so i missed that 😦
lmk if any of y'all are willing to sell, i'm totally willing to pay a fair price for it!
Could you give some advice on how to stand out as a freshmen? Do UCLA freshmen often get internships in freshmen year while studying? If so, how?
not during the year usually, but I guess you could
usually summer if anything
i would say a vast majority of people do not
some take summer classes
i personally did but i chalk that up to luck
Can you all please decline ucla so I get off waitlist
will do 🙏
declined my waitlist offer for ucsd <o/

i mean, declined my ucla waitlist offer in favor of a ucsd acceptance
I can read
but i can't type
UCLA hater
guys which dorm has the best views
anyone picking UCSD above UCLA?
cool.. how about CS or DS majors - anyone picking UCSD above UCLA?
i mean they r similarly ranked
but ucla overall ranking is higher + prestige
so people would pick LA over SD
unless you have scholarship or regents at SD, id pick LA fs
but again comes down to preference
me fr
(i also did not get into ucla)
good point
also it's easy to transfer to cs or cse at ucla while it's very difficult to transfer into cs at ucsd
Gaming the major system
Actually dumb how thats even a thing
Pick easy major and transfer cs
lol thats why berkeley restricted cs for only those who are admitted to cs
ucsd also it's very hard to transfer into computer science
however ucla i hear its easy to transfer into cs or cse
if onyl i did that
is it easy to transfer into all types on engineering?
what do you mean?
hmm its ok, dont stress, which major did you apply/get in?
i applied cs and i didnt get in
waitlisted
oh sorry to hear.. which university are you planning to attend this fall?
ucsd for my 2nd choice (CE)
didnt get CS
ucsd and ucla are neck to neck in rankings and cs/ce are quite similar from employment perspective, so you can't go wrong with either
ece at the time of applying didnt know there were 2 ver
but if i didnt get cse cs
doubt the department would want me for ce too
true but the prestige of ucla >>>>> plus a good amount of ppl i know goes there
so woulda been cool to be in the same place as them
when will ucla WL start coming out
After May 1
what was UCLAs acceptance rate this year?
8%?
dykstra, sproul, hedrick summit
does ucla give out of state students any instituional need-based grant aid
students not from california will not receive aid from ucla or the state of california
That’s completely wrong
Im oos and I got a shit ton of aid
how 😭
If you didn’t complete fafsa or send any of your info that’s why
Or if your EFC is high, you’ll receive no aid
yeah i sent them everything, EFC's 15k though so
That means ur rich homie 😭😭
😭 ok this makes sense now
untrue
it's rare though
they gave me aid lol
like 10k+ in grants
interesting
but i have like a 20k efc so they just gave me loans after that
from ucla or the california government
attracting young talent like that i see
i guess but also the uc endowment is so high they can afford to be a liiiittle more generous
but i also qualify for instate tuition so i’m working to get that fixed
honestly, systemwide
they kind of view oosers as cash cows
meant to subsidize californians
not a resident but i qualify for a nonresident tuition waiver bc of my dads military stuff
lol keeps the economy moving.. californians go out of state colleges, other state students come to UC's
Not me I’m too good 😎
hey does anyone know if there's an admitted students server for ucla ?
Ya ill send in dm
bruh 15k efc is not considered rich lmfao there's ppl with 60k+efcs
my efc like around 53k-55k ish so yeah i got absolutely $0 from berkeley and ucla oos lol
ohh that's prob why u got aid as an oos student cuz ur dad's military stuff. i think they make exceptions in aid for oos whenever the parent is a military worker
15k aint that rich
especially when the cost is like 70k
bruh exacty lmao 15k isnt enough for 70k. and in general, 15k is not a super high efc bc most ppl ik have upwards of 30k+, ppl generally considered "rich" would have efcs of around 60k+ usually
2k efc is very low, esp in comparison to other ppl’s efc’s who are applying to t20s. and nahhh 15k is actually kinda “low-ish” tbh, atleast in comparison to other ppl who r applying to t20s. and mines like 55k and i know some ppl with like even 70k 80k. i think average ish ppl maybe have around 30k possibly? anything lower than like 2k 1k ish could be like pell grant range
Do first years have to purchase meal plan
if u live on campus ye
I'm oos. How do I change residency to Cali for cheaper tuition?
this isnt how it works
theyre extremely strict on that
if you dont already have a presence in california your chances are basically zero
if you want cheap UC tuition and live on the west coast, you shouldve gone for Merced. they're a part of WUE and do discounted tuition for west coast states
in fact im personally going to have to send them a fuckton of paperwork because i clicked one wrong button and i actually am a california resident
I can change my presence to Cali
State residence + Drivers licence there
You already have one?
If you do then why aren’t you a resident now?
No, I mean I can
Yeah, so can a lot of people
You’re not the first to think of this
There’s a rule
You cannot establish residency for educational purposes
It’s extremely hard to prove you’re doing otherwise without a parent
So if I had a parent there, or proved residency in CA, what else would I have to do?
File a fuckton of paperwork
Even having a parent there isn’t enough
It just helps
Let me find the docs
Dammit Carly
What
It says the my application status site is currently unavailable? Is it like this for anyone else?
When does ucla waitlist start rolling out
Probably next week
Bc transfer decisions are probably today
So they’re down for that
apparently my friend got a call yesterday regarding UCLA wl?
That’s cool
Pretty early too 🥵
I hope I get off the list 😭
im on a lot of lists
WHY NOT MEEEE
NOOOO WHYYY
just declined my admission 🙏🙏 gl waitlist ppl
🙏thank you for your service
CHLOE ILY
UCLA IS ASS
UCLA IS ASS
fucla
Ucla is the best if I get off waitlist, however ucla is the worst if I don’t!!!!!
💔 where did you decide
CWRU
that’s me 💀
Real!
Holy balls congrats! Did you get an email? What does it look like?
AYYY CONGRATS!!!
Yh I got an email that said my application status was updated like the first time
And since it was still before may 1 I knew it was that I got in and yh I did get in
Correct
If spots for your major are full, there won’t be any movement for u
And yea, chances for cs are always low, but anything is possible
assuming wl is major specific, let's say 200 majors, putting 15-20k students on WL means college is putting 100 students per major on WL.. isn't that a lot? many majors don't even admit that many students
They want some options yuh kno
Like lets say u fit the exact demographic that they’re under enrolled in
how easy would it be to switch majors at la?
What about undecided 🫣
** Note: Not all decisions have been made for students on the waitlist. **
Decisions will be made on a rolling basis and will be posted here on this site. Please continue to check back. An email will also be sent to notify you once a decision has been made.
frick this shi brah
where did you receive this message?
hmm this confirms that some WL acceptances have been made and communicated
Yea ik
Is a bunch of stuff gonna come out on may 1st or are we assuming most spots were already given out
if i go to ucsc and do all the transfer requirements in 1 year do you think itd be reasonably possible to transfer to ucla lingcs
