#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 29 of 1
hmmm not personally
dont bet on the UC wl
benz got off
no
I definetly don't wanna discredit anyone here or say anything that discredits majors
but it is definetly harder to get off as an engineer
yea
because demand is higher
uiuc ea?
and thought maybe some one else could get "my spot"
yes
but tbh i dunno if I would've gotten in or not
but UCI wl
was very active last year
yea but they also had a lot of people get off
ucla i think had some people get off?
ucsd was pretty dead in terms of people getting off wl for cs or something
I dont think anyone get off for CS at all
or CE
only 200
uci and ucsd new cds not up yet
i feel top schools wl are always dead
I released all my WL execpt sd cause I accidently pressed accept
lmao
and they wouldn't let me withdraw
but u can unaccept
really
i can withdraw rn if i want
I already opted in I mean
and then I wanted to withdraw
once you optin you can't opt out for some odd reason
yea i can put no
I already put yes
and withdraw basically
i put yes too
i can change it to no
wait do u remember when ucsd
gave u a status update on the waitlist
late june for a rejection?
I think it was more like july
I couldn't do that
I even emailed them about it
and they never got to me
oh this year they said by end of june
do u still have ur ucsd portal
can u check the date
Yea but it doesn't have any info on it
It just says it's closed
first day?
Ah
LMAO there goes our tuition 😔
Not yesterday?
i mean better they spend it on that than... the football team lol
It’s required by law state buildings have decoration or something
of a fucking elephant?
I think it's a mammoth actually
is it hard getting off waitlist?
Yea it's not easy I think
Especially for CS or similar majors
Let me guess engineering is one of them too?
ye
its probably gonna be very hard
wouldn't be surprised if no one got off
yo guys each college's honors program's invites alr went out right?
probably
Any idea why gies's ranking has been increasing over the past couple of years? possibly sneaking into T-10 next year?
ig they tryna be more competitive
they even got a new building this year
hopefully it does become a target school 4 years down the line
does anybody know how outside scholarships will affect finaid for uiuc
I still have a lot of unmet need at uiuc so I feel like it shouldn’t affect the aid they already gave me but idk
u need to report that to them, not sure if theyll take away aid bc of it
it almost is actually, rate was 25% this year
yup pretty competitive
for international it was prolly 15%
been considering iu kelley vs gies as my acceptances stand (awaiting 5-6 decisions from reaches)
same
still got 3 decisions
but mostly its either these two
leaning towards gies though
got into iu kelley and umass amherst w/ merit scholarship but leaning towards gies
it has a better brand
so prolly alot of resources
and finance+data science is a pog combo
i asked around
it’s allowed
you can minor in anything but there are some requisites
nice
where did you hear this?
I didn't hear anything about acceptance rates to UIUC this year
any major can minor in cs
except cs+x
and compE
for good reason too
the minor is very comprehensive course-wise, but that also means its likely hell to go through for most people
What is the fair thing next week
UIUC CS is no joke that’s why
Internship
I agree the minor in CS is not easy
Can you declare a double major in cs+x
how easy is it to get off waitlist for cs math
isn't it a top 5
in cs
impossible i heard rather go to other school
damn ok
its there in their website
just search it up
Oh sheesh
According to the article, EA had an increase of 25% compared to RD I think
I doubt our acceptance rate is 25
something
but gies is becoming competitive
Yea gies is reaching Grainger levels
25% ish
I think
I'm surprised if IS dips to 25%
i think ar is prob 40% this cycle
Cause it was 68% last cycle
acceptance rate doesnt equal to level tbh
I wonder what the CS + x acc rates were
gies still has a long way to go to reach grainger levels
To a certain degree, there is correlation
but yeah it'll get there in a couple of years or so
No they added themselves into common app
Or else we would still have 60%
yeah
the uc application and common app single handedly bring down acceptance rates by a lot
Yep
there is an option for finance + data science major within gies
ucsb or uiuc
they dont need it clearly
Hmm
Yea
like i checked the common data set for last year
gies enrollment was around 500
it's on the site
im falling in love more and more with uiuc before my reaches/t-10 decisions come out
doesnt ucsb admit like 250 ppl for cs
i got in and am considering it
Didn't apply
Uhh not sure how eng goes
But it's in a good location
But it's like t40 I think for cs
So I didn't even consider it
It's really good for chem eng
if i was not i would not consider it at all
13k tuition
cheap af
i wanted ucsd
but they wl me 😦
ucsd is very strong in engi
@tender matrix do you need to get admitted to grainger for hoeft program?
i think ucsb is decent
Yep
are there any ai/robotics related minors at uiuc?
wanna pair up a bs in entrepreneurship major w/ something tech related
Stats
Our stat degree is very CS oriented
In fact our stat degree might as well as be called data science
Robotics do ee minor
Or ece
lemme check stats curriculum
It's gotten a lot better this week
fuck
For the minor you do a few classes in data science
Like R and python
Plus a theoretical stat class
rust?
That's gonna be in CS
CS 128 honors
Teaches rust
Granted I dropped the class cause I was taking too much
like i feel pairing my entrepreneurship major with something tech related will help me
For a stats dual degree you get a few statistical modeling classes and a few theoretical classes
if not pairing it with a finance minor
Either do cs
Or do stat
Imo
Also the stat dept offers some cool classes
They are offering one on time series machine learning for finance markets
Next sem
is there a link to stats curriculum? can't find it on the website
thanks
me too
but only after I found out that they tryna be more competitive
Sheesh
Yea we are cracked to a certain degree
Tons of freshmen I know have internships in the hardest year to get one
12th
ooof
was 16th or 17th last year
do most ppl go to chicago for internships?
damn
Not necessarily
I'm going to Wisconsin
also how far is chambana from chicago in terms of driving?
2 hours
i love entrepreneurship but the finance + ds major is whoring itself to me
how far
ye i was gonna major in finance anyway
but
the combo is too good to ignore
satisfied my 'asian' parents
any ai related minor at uiuc?
You'll have a really good advantage with it
like ml stuff
Not rly
oh
Unless you count stat
Stat has some intro to ML stuff in the lower classes
Stat 107
But that's part of your degree for finance + ds
But stat 200
Teaches some
Stat 400 might teach R depending on ur prof
But most of the AI classes are pretty much only for CS students
There might be an ML class in gies
there's a business data and innovation major too
Nice
what's the safety at campus like?
Uhhh on campus
Just be aware of surroundings
But it's not the safest
Especially green street
@tender matrix how has ur experience overall been at UIUC? im pretty happy about the cs acceptance but im worried about whether ill like the environment and especially the location lol
and worried about not fitting in since i come from socal and my school is a bunchh of south and east asians
pretty much any uni is full of whites
same with ucsd
asians are the 2nd most common race
oh i should edit my question, the asians was just a secondary thing, just overalll wondering how u like CS there and how u like the environment
but if someone went from an asian dominated area to UIUC im curious how their transition went and whatnot
ill probably end up making mostly asian friends at uiuc anywyaas
you will meet a lot of whites fs
and probably befriend them too
making friends is something im worried about regardless of where ill attend
thats fair
i dont think making friends should be too hard
since everyone is new
nobody has their friend circle
point
got in grainger mech e, love basically everything but the location. one of my concerns is job opportunities/pathways after 4 years, it doesn’t seem to be in the most innovative area. can anyone speak on this ?
^^ this is basically me but for cs lol
i do know most ppl havent had trouble getting like summer internships for cs at least, talking to someone ik who went there (family friend)
it wont be at uiuc tho itll be in a diff location/remote
not sure about during the year
u've heard its a good time like socially?
thats good to know loll
uiuc is def goated for engineering, not sure about mech e specifically but in general yeah
yeah i’ve heard some anecdotes but also it’s usually ranked at the top of most party / student / greek life polls
ok but cant u just go home for the summer if you live in a big city or smtg?
yeah p much
like idk why ppl make a big deal about location of uiuc
srry not really
like
ik ppl respect it for cs
non cs/eng ppl are just like whatever tho abt uiuc
mb phrases that so poorly
like is the campus good looking lol
its kinda mid ngl
u can look at virtual tours
pretty average campus
oh fr
but its big and i heard its pretty fun
oh yeah i saw online vids
yeah pretty much
its mid fs
sports are a plus too i love cbb
yea uiuc big on sports
idk i feel like campus isnt too big of a factor
cool campus are only cool until u get normalized to it
yea
how’s the football team?
oh shoot
i remember the first time i even heard of uiuc was when they were a 1 seed in march madness like 2 years ago lol
if i come to uiuc we making it to the sweet 16 next year
yup
i saw someone in a thread say that a pro of purdue is that they are "good at basketball" and it cracked me up
idk if you watched any of their home games but i saw clips of a few and the atmosphere is pretty good
oh that's cool
i mean any big 10 team is gonna have a good college sports atmosphere for the most part
they get to play ohio state and michigan every year
for football
and then like purdue and indiana for basketball
yeah big 10 was legit this year
one of the clips i mentioned was of the game v purdue who were the top of the ap poll at the time
is coe the hardest to get into
ya
oh
no
i thought you meant if ur in cs+x and want to do another major
Yes my experience here is great so far, met a lot of people, went to a lot of great events in terms of career etc in CS. I love it here and you'll have no problem finding friends.
I'm a Chinese international student, and actually we have the largest Chinese international student population out of all universities in the United States. So I had no problem finding friends. We also have a huge population of Asian Americans (20% of all students I think) and tons of clubs revolving around asian Americans so you'll be fine finding friends. In fact, a lot of Asian Americans here are from the bay area etc
Well speaking from personal experience, a lot of my friends found great internships in year 1, which is pretty rare at any school. Chicago loves us, but a lot of companies know us because we are good at engineering and STEM
If you are into quant, UIUC is one of the top quant feeders
Also location is actually quite nice. Champaign is a mini city almost, it's not completely flat or cornfields. We got some tall buildings and stuff to explore with in. 2 hours away from Chicago, and a lot of people go over the weekend (pretty common to do so). 15$ a train ticket up. Also campus is huge so theres a lot to do there too
And also UIUC is a party school, so don't worry too much about finding friends
Might take a while to find your friend group but it works out cause you meet so many people in the beginning
so I got into cs here but I've been thinking and idk if im fully set on cs yet, is there a way I can take a CE course or something to help me decide if I wanna transfer or not
also is cs+physics going to be available this fall?
Yea that should be pretty easy
Next fall
how are the opportunities for business students
Oooh I'm actually not sure
Are you talking about quant opportunities for business students
Or opportunities overall
Is this for grad school or undergrad?
Undergrad too
overall
i am looking to do the finance+data science major
and worried about UIUC not being a target for investment banking
Uhhh
It should be decent I think
Chicago is close to us
A lot of financial companies do know us
yeah aren’t the founders of jump from uiuc
Yea I think
hoeft is available as a minor for those who got admitted to gies
does UIUC rescind ?
niceee
Bro in CS it’s majority Asian
Lol
same!
one of the reasons I applied was bcs I liked the colors lol
if it wasn’t for A2C i wouldn’t have known this college even existed, now i might go there lol
Lol
uiuc gotta get a better PR team
lol
I think the college has done better
than before
at least people kinda know us
a2c has done more advertising than uiuc themselves
Can EE get into quant
Does uiuc have a discord server general or for class of 27?
Yea I’ll dm
Thanks
What about CE
Hmmm
Quant usually emphasizes skills like stats or math
And programing
So it depends what you do
Once I transfer to CompE I’m planning to specialize in big data
I’m probably gonna minor in stats or a double major if it’s doable
Is anyone here in Gies business honors
do you think quant can be my backup plan if im doing matse with a stats minor and i join all the right clubs and stuff
Tbh I am not sure
ah ok
Cause I'm not rly doing quant so I'm not sure how that would impact
i know they take physics ppl and matse is close
But we are a quant feeder
to physics
Yea
yeah make sense that sounds good
can dm me too?
yea
tyty
can u dm to me too pls?
yea
HRT didn't appreciate my C++20 D:
Lmao all quant companies were like nah to me as well
i was so salty
they told me to do the assessment in C++ or python
i picked c++
but turns out they really meant that there was one part of the test that must be done in C++
so i actually did their LC in...C++ too
and ran out of time for the actual C++ component
i clean sweeped everything but ran out of time for their dumb calculator parser lol
can u dm me too
anyone else here accepted for physics?
yea
yea
you gunna have to self study some stats and math stuff tho
So I got in EA a few months ago, and think I might want to go here but the OOS tuition is kind of a lot, do you think it’ll be possible to negotiate aid?
i dont think so cuz uiuc doesnt claim to meet aid
That is incredibly sad
Try emailing them a financial aid package from another school (like purdue) to match
I dont know if itll work but its worth a shot
anyone here picking UIUC CS over GT CS?
ppl say uiuc has a better cs program but gt is in a better location
do FAANG companies hire from GT on-campus
CS is pretty much same
but socially speaking you'll have a much better time at UIUC
but location wise GT is better
depends on ur priorties
UIUC is a party school
cool.. i would have thought UIUC as a nerdy engineering school, hows it a party school?
unlike georgia tech not everyone at uiuc is an engineer
engineer majors are a minority of the school lol
hmm cool whats a party school like?
how hard is uiuc compared to hs
like how hard are ur classes compared to ap classes in hs and stuff. should i start studying for stuff over summer?
even for cs/engineering students?
Yea
W
Some people are good at managing time and can party every week
(i just got waitlisted at gtech)
Lots of drinking
Lots of parties
facts
It's a step up but not hard to get used to
that's what i've been telling myself
It is
lots of non-eng majors
tbh the drinking age here is basically 19
lol
nice
depends on what you wanna major in too
im doing matse if i go to uiuc
im asking because a lot of my gatech friends said its as hard as high schol
what's matse
materials science and engineering
ah nice
@tender matrix would you say there's a big difference between cs/engineering majors and other majors at uiuc
like specifically cs and cs+x difference?
nah
or like cs/eng/cs+x against all other majors
yea
well
cs/eng people have more work
so less chance you'll see them partying on a friday night
but its a large range
there isn't really a disconnect either
oh that's great
i wasnt gonna party anyways lol
i was thinking maybe the cs/eng kids are kinda in their own isolated world, studying and stuff while the other kids are just partying
how is the placements at jobs and grad programs from uiuc
can i get into a good grad program
nahh
although a good deal of my friends are cs
I've got friends in linguistics, info sci, econ, etc
jobs in eng/cs are usually pretty good
lmao ironically those are all kind of related to cs
haha true
guess I should go out an make friends with someone majoring in english
materials science and engineering
you responded twice lol
my bad
can i have the uiuc 27 discord
yes, but unfortunately that means an A- is a 3.67
tho a B+ is a 3.33
rip
that's kinda annoying
yea fair
very hard to say and arguably incomparable; idk how your experience was with APs etc and work is very different here.
i wouldn't go out of your way to study in advance, at best you're ahead for a bit but idt it's much worth. just come here and play hard like everyone else does every year
damn really lol that’s scary
idk bout on campus but i have a lot of friends at tech who are faang now
how scary? different != difficult
i mean the way u phrases it makes it seem like the tests and such are way harder
mm let me rephrase
i can't comfortably determine how our academics compare to what you've been through bc idk what you've been through
just come here and go lol
if it's the hardest thing you've faced yet then so be it
work hard play harder
ye
honestly so far I dont think UIUC is hard if you put in the effort
but I havent taken the bad classes yet
so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
makes sense
won’t have to take that or calc 3 lol
what's the gender ratio looking like for cs
they post these stats online
all i see is that for engineering 76% of people are men
Good
but 76 is wild
Yea
Hey question-
I know UIUC is pretty cracked for cs but is it just as good for compE
I got into compE and seem to be getting rejected/ waitlist everywhere else
for cs its ~800 male, 400 female for people doing a bs
for grainger cs right
yep
i have no idea tbh
i'm sure it's pretty good
yep its pretty good
What would u guys equate it to compared to other schools
Like if I got into Cornell is it just as good
this would probably be similar for cs + math or cs + stat right
gtech, umich, cornell, cmu is equal
mit, stanford, berkeley is probably higher
Oh ok thanks
yep its the same for most schools as well. few schools like ivys actually try to get a balanced gender ratio
its bcs theres usually way more male apps than females for those majors
welp
according to usnews the only schools better than it are stanford, berkeley, and mit
so to say it's good would be a huge underestimate
Ye ECE department is cracked
they dont take loci right-
I mean
Do what I do
Internship in Georgia
Iirc no
how hard is it to maintain A's in hard classes
im kind of like an A- student...like i consistently get 91's and stuff so if i go to uiuc thats a 3.67
nah you can get 4.0
yeah
i got it way back
didnt really expect a package lmao
too bad ill be turning it down
didnt give me cs ffs
but I have GT CS so we col
cool*
congrats bruh
what major did you get at UIUC? why'd you turn it down if CS or CS+X?
i got rejected from main choice cs but got into pol sci
most likely same for me
ill be driving to uiuc on the 31st and by april 1st ill commit to a school
me
cool, what are some of the top reasons you like CE vs CS?
Congratulations! what are the benefits of this Honors program?
hmm how're the job prospects in computer engineering (vs in CS)?
with CE for schools like uiuc you can basically apply to anything computer related including those of CS
like a large part of my background is CS and I got in CE so you can tell they are very similar
well im planning to skip as much as possible so I dont have to deal with too much
how'd you skip
ive already taken/taking most of the required math and physics courses
if I really want I could power through all of them in like first semester
but I wont lol
theres also skip tests for a few courses
but they are hard
cool
good stuff
there's still circuits and VLSI classes probably that need lot of physics
yeah true
but itll probably be more fun at that point since its application based
even if its cs the later classes will be time consuming
ive taken a couple of 200/300 cs classes and the labs take forever usually
i see
sameee
has anyone appealed for a new major after being rejected from UIUC
and do you know the chances if you apply for smth else
Idt you can appeal
Unless you had a second choice major selected in the app
No
I mean compE + astronomy
I got in for comp e
And I sign up for astronomy after
Genchat gets so mad lmao
oh that’s cool double major?
Yeah
what're the benefits of Edmund James Scholars Honors program?
Hey guys I had a quick question if anyone could help. So I got into the Grainger college of engineering for bioengineering. I was wondering if I could switch between engineering majors before joining? Am I accepted to the college of engineering as a whole or to the bioengineering dept only
yes, you can switch to all majors, except to CS
and depending on the major it maybe harder to switch
so you should plan accordingly
what are the harder ones, like electrical engineering?
According to the website it’s CompE, EE, ME, CS, and BioE
They're so weird with this, I'm pretty sure they sent me mail saying they admitted me back in like February, but they just sent an email saying they put me on the waitlist☠️☠️
Rejecting cmu to go here 💪💪
Based choice
i got rejected here but not cmu
yo guys were the ap scores supposed to appear on the application portal?
rejecting uiuc to go somewhere >= gtech cs
like in the test scores column it only has my sat scores
did you get in?
No
85k is way too expensive for depression
Cmu less game too 😎
less expensive for pretty much the same education and opportunities
Any UIUC physics majors here?
I love how you got the honors as well
Now you just need the rejection for the full 100% speedrun
what classes can you get ap credit with for a cs major
cs 101 if you do apcsa
rest youll prob need to do the tests
look through the AP credits online
thanks 🫡
CS101 isn’t part of the cs major curriculum
But cs124 is basically ap cs a and you can prof out pretty easily from what I’ve heard
nope, its our intro python course for non-cs majs
honestly pretty poorly taught imo, bad impression
You don’t take CS 101 as a cs major iirc
I second this
can I ask do you know if it is possible to get involved in astronomy related research at UIUC as a physics major?
w
sad
uiuc here i come
guys its ok uiuc is the best school
💯
alright. thank you so much
does anyone here do bioengineering or is admitted to bioengineering btw?
how come ? im curious because im caught between cmu and somewhere else hahahaha
well its the fact. that everyone from my school got into UIUC and im the only dude who got cmu
so yeah im a prestige whore
also its a private school
also nobody around me would let me consider going to uiuc if cmu is. on the table
even tho i personally. know that ill have the same opportunities be it uiuc or cmu
ohh ok😭😭😭
cmu has some very strong pluses for many people, don't discount it
and the 30k extra cost great way to flex
is there biomed engineering for uiuc
u do cs?
do u have any experience w changing majors?
Mhmm
Not rly
that’s sexy bro
But if you got any questions Abt it I might be able to answer
cs at uiuc?
that’s cool
other than that what do u do for fun there lmao it seems like a dead place ... a sad one too
good luck bro
I usually have fun with my friends
Go eat
make friends?
sad
sounds fun
meh
It's not as bad as you think
Champaign is a little city
It's just far from stuff
But we have stuff to do here
thats what im thinking
There's karaoke, bars, etc
The drinking age is basically 19 here too
So yea a lot of people drink and stuff
im an international student admitted to uiuc so its j interesting to see what ppl think of it
but from all the reviews it seems quite chill
Yea I'm an international student too
im j trying to figure out how hard it would be to switch majors
I think it's good
thats nice
What major are you trying to switch into
And from what major are you switching from
from bio to biomed or bioeng
Yea that's not gonna be easy
If you got bme somewhere else I'd go somewhere else tbh
You aren't guaranteed to get in
Yea
tysmmmm
Np
SJSU CS or UIUC (Stats and CS Minor)?
Depends on what career you want to go into
How’s the nightlife scene
I think it’s great
that's big
yooo
Anyone take part in the virtual admitted thing today?
I missed it because of school and was wondering if there was anything important
Did anyone get their financial aid package yet?
I didn’t get a financial aid package at all yet
4.0/4.6 weighted
1560 SAT
Great ECAs
Very disappointed as rejected by 7 US Colleges so I am planning to take a semester break and re-apply in the spring intake.
Kindly suggest if I am on the right track and who else is thinking about the same.
No harm in retrying but imo for unis like uiuc it could be better to just transfer after a yr
what are your courses like
@tender wharf Cognitive science
yo
lol im tryna transfer to stats & cs
theres no harm trying for me because
i heard you can take stat 400 instead of cs361
to get out of that requirement
so the only extra class id take is math241
which is p light
Good luck man
You already got cs + adv so even if you don’t get stat ur chilling with cs
yeeeeee
apparently its easier to transfer btwn cs+x programs
cuz i already got "approval" by the cs department or something
cs + math and cs + stat are much tougher than everything else
ppl never satisfied smh
Eh tbh that's a good thing
Don't ever be too satisfied with yourself so you can improve yourself
never settle
How doable is switching from ece to cs+x
dude no joke asks this every week thinking the answer changes
Impossible
its possible just hard
Just tryna get multiple perspectives my guy
Nowadays transferring to CS (or +X) is becoming very tough
That it is much better to direct apply there
and this is just a2c chat lol not the uiuc ones
That’s about appealing not transferring
CS+Stats is the toughest to transfer into I suppose
only one talks abt appealing. im not looking to aruge just wondering how you would be getting different perspectives when cs is the most demanded major
Idk maybe there’s someone who’s pulled it off
well yeah thats diff
waitlisted oos stats&cs
real
lol im cool with cs + advertising if i dont make it in stats
pretty sure anything with cs @ uiuc offers good job prospects
which major are you planning to transfer from?
thats what i have heard
is it possibel to change colleges
i think cs+math and cs+stat had around 45-50% acceptance rate this year while cs+economics had 22% and pure cs had 11%
pure cs oos is 2%
they want you to attend the school
all the colleges ive gotten into send an email like every couple of days
No CS + stats and math are the hardest CS + x to get into
It's more like 15%
I know for a fact we did not take half for CS + stats
Considering my incoming cohort was about 60 for CS + stats
Is this higher if ur cs + x already
The acc rate was higher in 2019 I think
And it's inflating it a bit
But it's def around 15%
This year
Also I'm 99% sure these numbers are scuffed
Because the website says a 25% acc rate for CS + x
That's not reflected in this data
Pure cs is 6%
That's not reflected in this data
This number is for incoming freshmen
altho one thing to be said
Once we got added to common app our acceptance rate dipped massively
So sub 20 seems about right for the harder CS + x
2019 is def an outlier
That was the last normal year
this year it can be v different
because
seeing higher ar of cs+ x, many applied there
These last 2 years are very different
Yep
First of all last year was the first year CS + x and CS had the same number of incoming students
Also it was the first time we got added to common app
And covid etc
yea
There is no way a CS + x has a 50% acceptance rate right now
and the thing is not many are aware abt cs+x, reddit and discord is just a bubble of world
so many apply cs
Yea that's becoming less now
Since other schools have CS + x programs too now
It's becoming more common
True
ayy
Are you Chinese lol
no indian
Ahhh cool
Oh yea if u come to uiuc
Gotta tell me if the Indian food here is authentic or not
Cause I'm getting mixed reviews lolll
damn tell ur fav dish
