#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages ¡ Page 17 of 1
Damn
most engineering schools fill up their space in early rounds to begin with
Yep
for cornell 2/3 of the engineering class gets filled in early decision
Welp thatâs unfortunate
not it isnt
Hopefully I can still get into my major tho
It's around 60k
Yea đ
I'll finally know someone else in stat + cs
I dont get aid even with half the efc. its 60k for comp e
I like know no one in stat + cs
i remember it being 50k maybe
Yea it's a bit extra
I mean I'm also adding it like
do you know the range of scholarships
Other fees
Nope
Instate people can get full rides
I know that
I know 2 ppl on that
but u have to be excellent
Yeah someone I know from last year got a full ride
Yep
But he was presidential scholar
And need fin aid
what about oos
also if you have under a certain income
None get full ride oos basically
does overloading cost extra?
most schools have the same price for 12-18 credits afaik, would kill my plans of graduating in 3 years if UIUC doesn't
=12 tuition cost is the same cost according to calculator
when does it come out
3/3
wtf
thats so expensive
thats like almost private school expensive
its bcs its oos
also tuition locks after 1st semester
so price wont increase
yeah but still
purdue is not much worse and is much much cheaper
my instate flag ship is abt the same as uiuc for oos students
its much cheaper for in state
Purdue bills by credit hr
So the price is actually similar to uiuc
62k is just first yesr
Later on it gets cheaper cuz u don't live in the dorms
@tender matrix is statistics a required course for grainger kids
I think u'll take engineering stats
I don't quite know tho
"Freshman applications are reviewed holistically and no more 20 percent of the admitted class is invited to be James Scholars in the first semester of attendance."
specifically for ece
and >=3.5 is considered top 25% of the class
stats is not a required course for ece
but ECE 313 - Probability with Engineering Applications
is
and thats basically a stats class
what's hte diff between james scholar and chancellor's scholar?
much fewer chancellors scholars, so arguably more selective. benefits vary. no outsider is really gonna tell (or care) about the differenceâyou'll just graduate with honors / as an honors student
Hey guys was anyone able to send mid year transcript for RD
No they donât want it
Can you send the link for this
20% is like 30-40 people
that few?
i thought this program was huge
if 20% is 40 people
then the incoming class only has 200
ece
I remember incoming last year for ce had like 130
do you know how many applied then
and the yield rate
for ece
no but those are probably not out for the prublic
I think I mentioned ce acceptance rate before
low teens im guessing then
yeah close to 10%
its 249 exactly for ece
where r u getting this
yep
it downloads as xlsx files
are you sure this is true?
i feel like i know more than 130 compes
yeah thats whats listed
it increases from freshmen year to senior year
and theres a bunch of transfers senior year so im guessing thats why they want to restrict it
that number seems shockingly low
so that means only 10% of compe majors are freshmen?
thats the toal undergraduate im just talking abt incoming
from what i remember 500 ece students enroll a year
freshmen, soph, junior, senior
129 224 296 682
for CE
400 transfer senior year but they had to take the classes before
so im guessing that what you mean
i dont get these nymbers
why would seniors have 2x as many compes
send where youre getting these numbers
yes but its not your fault
this is grade level by credits
i see
so even though its my first year here
im a sophomore or junior standing
because i had a lot of credit beforehand
this explains why there is a disproportionate amount of seniors
i have no idea what KP meeans
but think of it this way
theres 1300ish compe majors here
so lets say 425 per grade, lets say only 425 commit for each class
yeah that adds up in the table
every senior is a senior in standing
half the juniors are seniors in standing
and maybe a fourth of sophomores are seniors in standing
thats 700 people who are seniors technically, but around 30-40% of those havent spent 4 years in college yet
hmmm thats interesting
the uni considers me a soph last time i checked
i know this cause under a document for my class it said everyones year and mine said soph and so did my friends but its our first year her
so then I dont think its actually possible to know how many actual incoming "freshmen" without transfers
How many people would you say quit
That's good
How are there so many people that start out as "juniors"
Isn't that like 60 credits
would anyone mind helping me find the series representation for (cos(x)-1)/x
what kinda problem is this wtf?
this is a lot harder
i figured it out
nvm
since cos(x) starts with 1 the -1 cancels that out and you can just start the series at n=1 and divide each term by x
what series
I was thinking Maclaurin series but
yea mclaurin
i figured it out dw
yea calc BC
cool we studied the same thing in IBHL math
nice
@strong fox @tender matrix have you guys tried getting internships at research park?
apparently its not that hard
only con is that you have to work part time during the semster lol
but there are some summer ones too
I didn't
I just found one outside during summer
Don't wanna stay in champaign over summer
ic
Sorry if stupid question but if im going to study engineering do i have to take classes like english and stuff?
Nice. What about like those general education ones. Are they aids?
Wait i have to do foreign language đ
Damn foreign lang đ
Ok guess im not going uiuc then
Skill issue
Also do u know if its easy to transfer from electrical to mechanical engineering at granger?
Can I get out of it of I got a 5 on the ap test
@strong fox ^
it is
yes lol
i didnt take any foreign lang ap class
i got out of all credit
at least in grainger
Yea
It would prob be harder the other way round
prob but why would u do that lol
Wait so do u have to take one? Or could you take ap tests in Chana too
I had the AP test and I did Chinese thru highschool
So it counted
Itâs been almost 2-3 weeks post revision and it still hurts
Rejected by UIUC or âwaitlistedâ rather
awesome
im good then
How easy is it to transfer from electrical to computer engineering
ez pz lemon squeezy
its ez
theyre in the same department
Oh damn
I applied EE 2nd choice so if by some luck I get in that means I can transfer into compE
No I did cs+stats first choice
I got deferred so weâll see in 2 weeks if I even get in
Risking what
time
its actually not too bad a risk
cause like
ur already cs+x
yea but
useful for doing DS anyway
hmm
You could probably take calc 3 through netmath
tbh calc 3 is nice for any major in stem
when do scholarships come out?
@tender matrix do you think CompE with a stats minor/double major is doable
very very doable
double major stats
its one of the easiest things to double major in
oh you'll need a double degree
so you'll need to apply to LAS again
once you get here
How competitive/difficult would that be
thikn ill just stick with cs + adv
i know ppl in the major who still ended up with good jobs and stuff
so i guess its fine
:
:/
Cs+adv seems like a cool program
not competitive
cs+phil seems more interesting to me
yea maybe something to think about
im hoping to become the CA for the intro to data science class here
which is in the stats dept
maybe I'll see some of u if Im succesful

ah double major is like
44 credits I think
since you got calc 2 down
its like 38
38 / 4
so like 2 classes a sem maybe
most of the classe are electives
which are cool cause its ML
idk man
all i care about is getting a job
lol
i feel like cs + adv is good enough for that purpose
i dont care about learning shit
lemme do the math
here are the extra classe
calc 3
stat 107
stat 400
stat 410
stat 425
stat 426
four stat4xx electives
ye
is calc3 3 credits or 4
ok its 4
so
its 32 extra credit horus
math257 overlaps
also
i want to take more cs electives
so idk if double major is the best choice
oh yea tgeb dont
regret not doing ea and cs + x here smh
rip
I don't know a single person irl that got into CS + stats this year đ
Or CS + x actually
yeah there were quite a few people ik that got in both engineering and cs+x
like 10-15 engineering and like 5 cs+x
how many ppl are admitted to CE major as freshman
i got into CE just want to know the competition out there for it
i saw 2 on reddit and 2 from my school
and then i got deferred
i say like 10-15?
10-15% **
ooh lol
i assumed high singles
since its comparable to CS, and gets CS treatment
and total is like 4-500 who commit so maybe 600-700? depending on how many actually commit
wait so for dual enrollment
if I didnt take the course in uiuc then credit only transfers right
On the website it says this
Youâll receive credit for any transferable college course that appears on an official post-secondary transcript. If you enroll at UIUC, the grades youâve earned in that course will be part of your cumulative GPA.
Does enrolling in uiuc mean taking the class there
oof
oh yeah it literally contributes to your overall gpa
it's prob the reason why my gpa is .2 higher or something lol
so uhh try to do well in your dual enrollment, could pay off:D
Did any of you post on the UIUC class of 2027 insta account?
which one
i suppose many r there
Any one
na
we have quite a few good days lately
I really liked ur street pic u posted
Ayyy thanks
Im going tmrw
gorgeous
i would visit the campus
but
idk hwo that would work
i fly to chicago then take a 2 hour uber to champaign?
i am visiting this week, flew in to chicago, took peoria bus from o hare straight to campus
im visiting in like april bcs its like 10 hrs away by drive
What's the most common programming language used in internship interviews?
Java
Nice
@strong fox do you know what CE internships are like I couldn't find much abt them online. I only saw them being similar to software ones
They donât exist for freshmen
Or sophomores
If you want an internship do software first and second year
I see makes sense
^, which tends to be python for the stupid DS brain teaser types
I'm currently using c++ but I think I'll switch to java since that's usually the one used in a ds class
nah we're C++ all the way
java/kotlin for our intro semester before two semesters of C++, including our DS class
That's great then
idk, can only find out from advisor or transfer creds. i think there's a site that lets you see what courses count for what?
but we don't just do C++ for the sake of it, you're learning slightly lower level concepts, mainly memory management
We have a data science class in python
Took it last sem
But other than that
It's c++
For the core CS classes at least
There are other classes that teach specialized language
Like rust
your opinion
so start learning c++ now is what im hearing
When is RD coming out
march 3 iirc
Same, just got my invite today
does anyone have any advice on how to prepare for the statistics and computer science major
Should I bother appealing
how tough is that to switch into
not a big deal, i never used it until we spent a year on it and i got very comfortable with the basics
mm ye thats tru
only thing is if its like rly useful id start learning it regardless
imo leave college for later, but if you want, this is probably the most worth spending a little time on: https://missing.csail.mit.edu/
thank you ill check this out
you're in good hands (well, doing difficult work lol) and not meant to study anything in advance
i haven't even formally dove into that but a brief skim of it's contents seems very promising. tbf, i think uiuc did a decent job exposing the most important stuff (git, cli, etc) your first year
I agree all of it looks really good
the amount of people who dont know basic git or shell commands is riduculous
real xD
ye i self learned a lot till i came to america
like even csa showed me that i was doing a lot wrong with my code like naming variables, comments and allat yk the basic shit.
I was kinda just coding just to make shit work not to acc learn so fixing a lot
real af
hey i didn't know either of those until i reached college
nah im just annoyed bcs I have to teach people this stuff all the time
there was this one girl who was a computing olympiad winner and she didnt know how to commit to git
I really questioned what I was doing after that
lol
ig you don't necessarily come across it in cp
she ended up in mit
yeah probably just went all theory no practical stuff
UIUC philosophy -> UIUC CS+PHIL interdepartmental transfer OR UIC CS -> UIUC CS+X
probably the second option
ur guaranteed a cs degree in that option
whereas your first option ur not guaranteeing yourself a cs degree
should i have any hope for a cs+stats deferral or am i just waiting for a rejection
Tbh i dont think its safe to say cuz this the first year uiuc did ea
So how deferrals work is still like unknown
no, we just didnt release EA decisions early for the last 1-2 years
Last year it meant u had a higher acc chance
def not the first time we did ea, but more like they broke their ea promise. they still enforced ea deadline my year
Uiuc sucks ass
sure can
Why are u playing visual studio
am working
Where do i download
where do you see it?
go to the admitted student checklist
financial aid
ohh okay thanks!
ui integrate self service
is it the cost of attendance tab?
yeah
congrats
welcome to the club
(though if you get a 0% interest loan, that's a fair no-loss option)
yep same full pay
Can I cry to the admissions office to reverse my decision
no
if it sucks ass why wuold you care
back to work
Bro ask them to give me an acceptence
my essays were so ass for uiuc so if i get rejected i will understand and not hold it against them 𫡠LMFAO
"you have not been awarded financial aid for 2023-2024"
i still see this message tho?
Ask them yourself
Thatâs what you apply for
Yea me too
Guessing itâs rolling
i got my finaid award
how much?
Hooray!
got 1k off for chp, 39k in state lmfao
i like how they calculate ur need just to say u get 0 a few lines down
$0 in aid!! three cheers for uiuc!!!
đ
wtf i got really good aid
in state tuition too. might consider uiuc more even though i didnât get first choice major
wait did you get grants & scholarships
yeah
nice
the aid instantly took it off my list đ i got into a safety thats in a much better location for my major even tho its more expensive
thats so understandable. i got into rutgers business school NB but i already know thats not gonna happen with OOS costs once i get my aid letter lol
Cost is brutal
how do loans work exactly
idk but they literally listed 30k in loans for my estimated cost
The donât give int scholarships right ?
very very rarely im guessing
assume no
na i dont think so
if anyone visiting this weekend crash our hackathon
sameđ¤Šđ¤Š
if im an american citizen
with family in urbana
that studies in england
what am i classified as
where do ur parents live @pulsar mica
hong kong
oh
ur evaluated in the intl pool then im pretty sure
idk how it works maybe @tender matrix will know
ite
applying for cs as well
kinda hoping i get in cuz it'd be so nice to just drive like a minute to school
u should prob cs+x if u want an easier chance
well its a bit too late
does UIUC offer alternate majors if you don't get into your preferred one
if u choose other majors
pretty sure you have time to change ur 2nd to ee, if you dont get cs they will give ee and then you can switch to CompE
Fr
An international student
You are considered part of the country where you did high school
As they compare you to the pool there
I'm an American citizen that lived in china and was considered part of the Chinese pool
ite
all this talk abt ee is giving my inner ib student a heart attack
electrical engineering?
What if u did both đ
Freshman sophomore in Nigeria, junior senior here
PLS đ Iâm in the process of finishing my ee
You'll be compared to US people but if it not a US citizen it might impact you cause ur still an intl applicant
nah im a dual citizen so ig ill b domestic (?)
RIGHT mine is due tmrw & im freaking
march 3
No I think itâs all at once
I like how they advertised that they had stalls that lock
is there a cs+philosophy discord or just cs lol
uh i dont think so, my rd app says march 3
ah ic ic
which western lol
North?
bKQeMpjn
nah im still applying to NU
its still NU for me
until they reject me :>
or accept :>
ye
ye
duke campus + NU are goated
Was never too big of a fan
Itâs ok I guess
thats the only good part
Itâs what surrounds the campus
the rest is mid like u said lol
I love Lake Michigan
The water is what I miss the most about Urbana
I did not visit many colleges
OSU, Purdue, UIUC, and Iowa weâre the only ones I visited
its not close to water?
No
i thought its like close to river?
Weâre in the middle
no river no lake?
rip
It runs through campus
rip đĽ˛
I walk over it every day
can u like row in it?
is purdue good
for campus lol
lol đĽ˛
did u get rejected for ed at NU? @strong fox
I didnât think Purdue was too good
I didnât apply to northwestern
I couldnât find a positive besides an ego boost
Iâm also a freshmen in college
lol
ye ik
my friend visited purdue and they said the ece building looks like a dungeon
yeah but cost is lower for purdue
How hard is it to get admission in cs? What other universities can I look at if I don't get admitted here?
if you are talking abt just cs then this is one of the hardest places to get into and one of the best as well
cs+x is easier in select ones
6.9% i think
very
fr
What's like the second or third best?
uiuc is on the same par as mit + stanford
go on usnews or sth lol
GaState is my safety so yeah I'm looking for something higher than that lmao
there is no "best" since after a certain level you get same opportunities and education
georg state business is good tho :>
ye
like in top 10
they're mostly on the same level so
I'm looking for something that's like good enough
dont be depressed if u got into purdue engineering (top 9 or sth) and not mit or stanford (top 1 engineering)
what specific factors
yeah
UIUC is one of the best big 10 schools
I would say only northwestern is better, and UIUC is comparable to umich atp
its the sports conference for public schools
includes most of the good engineering schools in comparison to the liberal arts ivy league
I wouldnât call big 10 all good for engineering
yeah
My order would be:
UIUC
PURDUE
UMUCH
NORTHWESTERN
OSU
theyâre all very similar
For example Purdue is much better for aero
But uiuc is much better for ece
yeah
same
Good ish job placement after CS. I dont want my life sucked out of me due to the workload. And a good ish warm location is plus. That's all
UIUC is top tier for job placement for cs
Any other school comparable is on the west coast
Yeah I'm gonna apply to that but I don't like my chances
Do CS +
I'm not looking for THE best job placement, just good. I dont want to be jobless out of a uni
Yeah cs+astronomy is what I'm thinking
Oh thatâs fire AF
Iâm doing compE + astronomy
I just havenât declared astronomy yet, waiting until 2nd sem soph
So youre more on the hardware side?
Yeah I wanna do semiconductors
Nice what do they teach? Like a rough idea?
Is cs more stressful than ce? How many hours of sleep do you have to loose?
Wdym what do they teach
I lose no sleep due to school
And CS and CE are decently similar
Many overlapping classes, some say Ce is harder some day CS
No clear answer
Do you learn how to code and stuff or how to make GPUs and shit?
Iâm a freshmen
I am learning how to code
And some hardware stuff
EE requires semiconductors, Iâm forcing myself to take it
Ah okay thanks
Northwestern channel is mad LMAO
Did u get into all of em?
Why is it easy? They have a 30% acceptance rate
Yes
But uiuc is much lower for my major lol
So is Purdue
And probably even OSU, I got honors and a fuck ton of money
UF isnât the best for eng
will rd decisions be posted at the same time as ea? (4:00 pm cst)
fr
still got no clue wth big 10 is lol
1 week to gooo
cant wait to get rejected â¨
the chances of not getting into cs but getting into ee are minuscule anyways. stick with physics
got u
it happens to alot of ppl
as an asian male cs applicant, can't expect anything more â¤ď¸
Any CS students here, how much money did u spend on books/supplies your first year?
$0
what cs class uses a book these days
unless u count my music theory LOL
engineering and LAS students should qualify me but depending on what you need to take, you might need to spend money on physics hardware (iClicker and ioLab, wtv those are) and perhaps some textbooks on geneds (that you can hopefully find online)
but the CS classesâi honestly cant tell a single one that even remotely asks you to pay for books or related material
the PDF texts we do have are free bc...we wrote them:p
ah
what abt gen eds or math classes or anything else youâd take 1st year
Tho I havenât figured out which classes i can pass out of yet with AP
Ah nvm I see
so are the only real fees I have to worry about from the finaid report are the housing, tuition, the random 4.8k in fees
Books shouldnât be too much of an issue it seems
def some geneds, but math i hear not necessarily. at least i havent seen ppl haul around math textbooks for "engineering math"
whatever cost they put up for materials in COA is super generous
obv u spend more the first month to get stuff for dorm and self
uhh not sure
but i suppose so
theres nothing there that id be able to significantly cut out
hm
Iâm in state but non citizen so I got like 28k coa after aid
my efc was like 400 đ
but I cut down 1.5k on insurance
oh yeah, as long as it qualifies
and the 1.5k on books it seems should be much less
varaince too wide for me to comment
fair
eating out here is not cheap imo
what abt the dining plan
i mean its force fed to u so
Iâll be required to stay in dorms anyway
use it unless u hate it
yea
the food is particularly bad this year bc we're not rotating as often i think
but i suppose ppl hop around dorms to eat
I see
i ate at a diff dorm for lunch often last year bc i was closer there
my parents have some money saved
and if I can work this summer
and maybe at school as well
might be ok idk
do you know if you can request more than 5k in university loans
they donât look too bad, fixed 5% interest
This isnât true
CALC 1-3 needs to pay for cengage
PHYS needs to pay for an iclicker and smart physics license
Potentially an IO lab
ah that makes sense, forgot abt software
i didn't take any calc or physics here lol
def below the COA listing of spending right?
Yeah
Maybe a couple hundred a year
I think my higher level ece classes wonât have anything I need to pay for
All my lab kits are free
Bro why do people shit on the UIUC campus
I thought it was better than Georgia techs
anyone know when decisions come out for rd?
i heard that if youre in cs+x its pretty much guaranteed to switch to cs+math/stats as long as you meet requiremenets
and otherwise its like >80%
bro thats insane
welp
đ
they gonna add computer science + astrology bro
lmao
Well riddle me this
without underwater basket weaving how are porpoises supposed to carry their stuff
which one do people prefer to transfer to: cs+math or cs+stats?
CE probably has more physics
Physics isnât what makes it hard
They have 1 semester less of physics, or 2 classes less
there's more applications of physics in CE classes - electronics, circuits, analog signal processing, digital signals, etc
Physics is cool until I have to take the test
alot of people transfer to stat
im just gonna try tansfering, in the low chance i dont get it ill just pursue a double major (ive gone past the point of return atp)
Thatâs the a2c major
Computer science + [portal] astrology
Letâs say I get my second choice major (math) is there any pathway into cs+ x?
yeah
from what i heard
cs+x transfer really isnt that hard if you meet all requiremetns
Its impossible to transfer into CS
Theres no way itâs easy
is that policy new for this year
how hard are the physics c proficiency exams
we are 5 days ish away from the decision
for RD kids at least
and it probably marks the beginning of one of the biggest march/april time of my lifetime
all things happen, college-wise, now till april will determine my next 4 or 20 years lol :>
yeah totally no pressure
yep
in 2020 cs+x trasnfer was 80%
because most people applying met the requirements
Huh
ive heard that it doesn't really matter when you accept admission as long as it's by may 1s and you'll get equal consideration for housing and stuff but the uiuc faq says this
am i just misinterpreting it or do you actually get better housing if you accept earlier
im hoping for at least 2nd choice
what were your two choices
Cs (Ik ik I didnât think it through I joined this thread after) and math cuz đ¤ˇđžââď¸
Idt I get either
well you never know what will happen
it was on some piazza post
by advising]
btw
someone ik filed a foia request with admissions office for statistics for each cs+x
so we will get acceptance rates for everything
nice
Bet
This was a long shot for me
Rejected gt umd columbia and ut
But I got vt and uf
So not a bad spot
I also got rejected gt
I also have 11
Ur tj right
yes so I expect every single one to be a reject
yeah I got in
yeah I have a backup compared to most but I think almost everyone has one atp
since everyone applied to like 20 đ
anything over 10 is not normal lol
I applied to gmu way later but vt was like my worse case scenario cuz Iâd prolly transfer regardless or even graduating isnât too bad
having 10 backups
98% were reached
oh like the ivy + cal shotgun
are those tabs?
when would they release them?
Portals
oh nice idt I have an actual list anywhere
I star all my portals so I can get em easily
I just put them in a drafted email
super insecure but idt anyone would take the passwords
Fair enough
im praying for mse
ill post them here
they will just give them to the person that asked
cuz its illinois law
next week i think
where is this from
fr
It's gonna be harder to transfer CS + x this year
Cause not only do we have priority now
But CS is blocked
@echo minnow did u get into uiuc for cs + stats or cs +adv?
cs + adv. stats double major (if i fail to switch into cs+stats)
ohhh ok
That sounds like a lot damnnn
From an illinois kid
Lmk if yâall ever have questions abt this state Lmao
(Not going to uiuc just bored rn, but a ton of my friends are)
is urbana just corn fields n stuff
or is there actually stuff to do
do you ever get tired of the corn
Ngl it is
I live in the chicago suburbs
Thereâs a good 1 hr radius around chicago with stuff to do
Urbana isnât in that
But itâs not horribly far away
chicago isnât that dangerous honestly
The investment group?
Yeah
I believe theyâre going to Miami
Caterpillar inc also left
google is supposedly opening new offices in chicago though right
Yep!
In 2026
lol I will graduate by then
Bought a huge former government center
Is cs+stats a good major if I want to go into software consulting
Idk exact logistics but seems p accurate
The city and suburbs have been doing p well
Where are u off to
