But my friends said physics sucks
LOL
The calc sequence here is ass

Cool stuff
π
Nah I'm so tired
Stats and CS has a larger workload than pure cs
For the first year at least
Any CS + x for that matter
But math sucks
So yea
my first sem is prob:
adv 150 (free class i heard)
cs 124
math 257
gen ed
is that good
how often are there tests in calc bj
Could u use bjz instead of just bj π lol
I keep think blowjob lmao
Calc 2 has 3 in a sem
Not including finals
That's chill
any quizzes?
I think stats and CS is just hell
No
i dont think i can take anything harder cuz of pre reqs
Yea
ok seems reasonable then
That's good make it chill
But CS 128 and CS 173 will slaughter you
Second sem is goes down
wait r u doing 128 and 173 rn
Yes
ahh
do teachers give practice tests for calc
Yes
like tests from previous years
so the format should be similar
Yea
do u care about ur gpa @tender matrix
Well there was this one midterm for calc 2
are there answer keys with work
That was way harder than normal ones
my teacher doesnt do that
Yes
y
its annoying
i herad college gpa doesnt rlly matter
Yes
I'm asian
And grad school
I want good gpa for grad apps
Yes I will 100% go for grad school
do ur employers not also look at college gpa
i mean
Nah
4+1?
if its good then put it ther
if its not good then dont put
Maybe
aww
im just gonna try in cs classes
bruh how
cuz i want to get a good cs education
but u didnt plagiarise right
so r u gonna beat the case
That's not allowed
oh
did u plagarize tho
oh yeah that happened to me once in a cs class
luckily it wasnt reported
Who struggled with English
And so I taught him how to do it
Our code was too similar
Got a plagarism notification
rip
appeal it
rip
is there english class in college
This is after appeal
Yea but some can only take it second sem
Cause too many students
Yes
oh no
Yes
Well it's part of gen ed
It doesn't have to specifically be history
But some humanities class
wait how many credits can we transfer
I think I might be able to skip all gen ed classes
bro you are doing advertising
is that like economics but rebranded
why the fuck do yall hate on advertising
No restrictions
smh
noice
Don't listen to them
not that ill get in but whatever
im just joking
All CS + x people are cracked
cs+adv is honestly not bad
yeah fs
like it could be useful
whats ur biggest class size bjz
i swear if this is the reality of like college apps just choosing a major u dont like to get in
theres no way you can get cs+x without being cracked
2000
out of all the cs+x programs, cs+adv was the one where my profile was more aligned with
WHAT
so i chose that
I agree with you
what class is that for
CS 124
only one prof?
but if you dont wanna do it
Cause everyone wants to transfer into CS + x
then i dont understand
i mean its not a big deal lol
what about tests
no im just like wonderinf
i legit
biggest in person class size
Online
Zoom proctor
600
does prof even have time to answer all questions then
basically i just did it to get in, employers dont gaf if ur cs or cs+x
No
yeah
then what u do if u need help
ig but then arent u wasting tuition if you dont like the adv core?
Cause you have office hours
i mean theres no other option
lol
i didnt get into anything else so far, besides crappy schools that uiuc is lightyears better than
ok in office hours im assuming there will be a massive line if one prof has over 600 students
Yea but there are TAs
The prof rarely holds office hours
oh ok
i see what ur saying i guess
like
i have ap credit to get rid of gen eds
so i can take some of the cs classes im "missing"
by being a cs+x student
thats facts
yea that works
π
take some cool cs electives
that stuff is fun
dont take calc
dont take physics
honestly
cs+x is lowkey better than pure cs
as long as u have ap credit to take extra cs classes
like im comparing the two
Yea in a way I suppose
i feel like if you like the X then cs+x is a really fucking worth major
Yep
yeah i guess so
thats cringe tho
grainger cs is the prestige major
Grainger CS ppl might be more cocky
iirc
are they knowledgable
Lmao that's why whenever someone tells me that stuff
I say recruiters believe I'm double majoring
π
are tas paid
Yes
do you say "Statistics and Computer Science" or "Computer Science and Statistics"
They are usually grad students
by the prof?
The latter
or the school
Kekw
ic
School
On my applications for internship
I write CS as my major
Cause stats + CS is not an option on most applications
Kekw
Nobody knows I ain't Grainger
then if the profs rarely hold office hours and dont answer questions, they sound like a useless piece of shit
lmao pure cs makes u takethis bullshit class
adv lets u substitute it with other bullshit π₯°
cs+adv is bae
LOL
π₯
yessir
That's basically all profs
At any uni
Their purpose is to do research
Teaching is the boring sidejob they are forced to do
theres no way thats an actual full semester
He holds worksheet classes and that's it
Yea
LOL this is a bonus in its own way tho
It fulfills ur advanced writing requirement

CS + x usually have theirs in their X part
ic
bro
im gonna email a cs advisor
to see if they will allow me to audit my degree requirements
to take cs 233+341 instead of 340+ 4xx
cuz
i wanna take systems programming so bad
its so useful
Yea you can
No one's stopping you
Ur advisor has barely any say
And sometimes they are straight up wrong
well
the thing is that
on here
it doesnt have 233+341 as an option
but on all the other cs+x it does
π
how hard is college
I'm basically doing work from the time I get up
Till now
I'm taking a break before I go to sleep
you are doing electrical engineering right?
for cs advising
yeah
thats literally arguably the hardest major
Wait wtf
cs 240 = 340
That's the first CS + x I've seen to not offer the old path
First sem is chill, second is not
I had a lot of free time sem 1
well bjz basically said it like tas are more useful than profs
They 100% are in many cases
No?
i mean
its has a major research focus so that makes sense
i just thought professors teach and dats it
to see if they can do that
they are probably busy with grad students or something
y is 2nd not chill
damn
so what is average then
im so uninformed
idk what is a credit hour to begin with
15
It's like points assigned to a class
You need 128 in Grainger to graduate
Some classes are 1 credit hr, some are 3, etc
were u just as clueless as i am
1 credit hr = 3 hours of work
before college
Yea
I learned this when I got here
However despite 1 credit hr = 3 hrs
This is only in practice
One of my CS classes is 3 credits
I'm probably gonna be doing 10 to 20 hrs
Of work
Instead of 9
is it project based
Kinda
At uiuc there is something called an MP
Stands for machine problem
They are basically like mini projects
That you program something and have a bunch of requirements
The harder ones can take 20 hrs
Or so
CS 128 has an MP per week
bruh just one of that class gives nightmares
I guess so π
But I'm kinda pessimistic
Lol
And I care a lot about grades
If u wanna scrape by, you will not be spending as much time as me
Or u can become a business major
so calc 2 and 3 are like straight weeder classes
The class after calc, diff eq, I heard is ez af
ok im going to try hard the ap so i can skip them
Yea
nice thats good to hear
u mean linear algebra?
That's separate
Diff eq is the next in the sequence
Usually
yeah I got you its the same in my school. they purposely made it so the entire class grade for calc 3 based off 4 tests
oh I thought you meant after diffeq I see
diffeq was much harder than calc 3 at my school
just my experience
what is first day of school like
Yea here it's way easier than calc 3
is it straight down to business
Welcome week?
or ice breakers
Or classes?
My math classes have always been down to business
And CS classes too
Others kinda do some syllabus stuff
Small classes might have icebreakers
what is the class u have smallest # of students
For CS 124 they had a quiz the first day
oh that doesnt matter
Linguistics
We have 30 ppl
I think
More
30 ppl is the norm for my high school
I think there is more
Yea
So in college
Each class usually has a lecture
And a discussion
Lecture is usually big
One prof teach lots of students
how about privates
Discussions are smaller sessions
isnt the ratio a lot smaller
Prolly
see this is why i am considering one
despite the outrageous tuition
well i mean its ur uni where else u go
yale does not help it seems
why yale
Yea TAs
Sometimes CAs
Which are undergrads
Doing ta work
Also online forums
Etc
a lot of schools like yale have controversy over helping students
in mental health specifically
bye
bye
how's UIUC CS+X vs UT Austin CS?
uta cs much better
uiuc cs + x vs purdue/usc cs?
uiuc
i would go UT
more prestige, better weather, location, dont have to take coureses in the X discipline
nah uiuc has way more prestige
bruh barely
I think they did mean UTπ
That is not true
every tech employer knows uiuc
its literally a target school alongside mit, cmu, and cal
ik that
prestige doesnt matter in tech
its only known internally
prestige is only to flex lol
You can't flex with CS + X tho
exactly
if ur goin pure cs then sure
Nah but I'm kidding. It's a meme. CS + X and CS are considered the same in the industry
yea
For sure
idk
could go either way
like UT is respected too
in tech
iirc theyre like #10 or something in cs
Yeah UT and UIUC are both great options
im from cali and i dont like the cold
so thats the main reason
also austin is good
That's fair
πΏ
You can't go wrong with either for CS. But UIUC is indeed ranked higher than UT if you want to be nitpicky with that
ye
everyone iβve talked to about college in the midwest has heard about uiuc
maybe 70% of them UT
nah I've seen some pretty active profs. the larger classes have an F ton of TAs who are usually helpful
my take: two majors, one degree. it's not a dual degree but it's two fields
My profs all seem to be shit then
i think it is but check the course explorer dates
True, but it looks like a double major π
terminology is inconsistent you're literally not wrong if you claim it is imo
lol I've seen it range from 14-22 depending on who you talk to
i hated self and did 20-21 last two sema
notice of admission letter is out
anyone get anything unique in it that i didnt
mine completely generic
What are that they mailed letters of acceptance and stuff to intl students?
its in the admission checklist thing
what closses
124 was nice, though YMMV, lin alg TA knew her stuff (maybe a bit too well lol, was lost sometimes), music was fun, genEd cool
128 was a pain but there's enough students and staff to usually save you, 173 was :// i shoulda connected for better TAs
225 was fantastic, shame it's not a smaller class size (literally the only con), 361 was LOL but TA saved us, 222 was a garbage show, and ECE prof was way too smart and nice
but its a big uni and stuff varies hella, ppl get unlucky:( but imo i think you can get a lot if you spend some more effort looking for the right people
I can't even take it sadly
unless ur into AI ethics and software documentation standards (?, though i havent taken it so idk the content) i dont think youd wanna
Yeah probably
173 and 128
Fuck these classes
i mean
Cosman is just a TA
Not taking 361
It's not in my sequence
oh
Yea it's not part of stats and CS sequence
Yea
173 + 128 is tough but imo you learn a lot if you put yourself to it
everyone says CS > CE but unless you hate SW or HW, you can orient self to get grad studies or careers in either "field"
imo the latter is what matters most to ppl
that true but can also interpret as diff routes to similar destinations
not exclusive
lol
Good thing taking it next sem
its prob bc ranking and everyone focuses on that
yeah
imagine 128 with in decent person lecs
Or maybe CS 128 without hellhole mps
and not that onslaught of MPs (once every 2 weeks)
but it's somewhat equally challenging
more focus on conceptual understanding than 128. its no longer a C++ classβit's a class that uses C++
LOOOL ive grown to be more sympathetic to nowak
C++ is considered like hell but alas, LLVM school gotta live up to its name
π
fair but i think it does it pretty well
there's prob some dedicated DS classes that don't touch circular linked lists
lol
Intro to C++ programming
That still doesn't sound good for data structures purposes
i think most RP and local companies know that the intro classes are no joke
Hmm
no but you dont need it
124 was kinda a joke lolll
not for those who didnt come from a programming bg
ik some CS majors who didnt have much bg
it's not fully equitable because the diversity is so wide
Hmm guess so
its meant for everyone and Challen can only do so much making it effective for everyone
oh yeah
The gap between those two classes is way too huge
124 should be slightly harder to make up for it imo
whats ur major
or 128 easier lol
cs+music
yeah that's fair, i think they know that too
but its...working LOL
like singing or some instrument
the computer is my instrument
oh
but im just the one that cant play (or rather, doesnt want to)
They know and still do nothing sigh
I know people who want to quit CS cause of these classes
So much for intro classes huh
i hope 128 adopts some of the 124 format, Challen's instruction format really takes off for introducing programming
:((
yeah i can see that being a poor impression
Yea the textbox is good
A walk through hell
Yea but it is very hard to get through for the average person
Hahaha 173 is killing me already
Exactly
but LOL the hw is ew i skipped all of it
Ymmv?
the way your supposed to do it is to submit a form or something and let prof know
the way everyone does it is just...show up
though i did imply it to a prof and they were all for it lol
technically ur not allowed to interact with the prof/staff (?) and do no work
So no one will like need to know
yeah, its in lincoln hall this sem
Oh so you can't ask the prof any questions
not sure, that's what i heard. some level of "no interaction"
but they do not care
why gatekeep
yep
Hmm ok
though i think im not doing enough of the classes i audit to make it that much easier
uhh 225 is prereq i believe
Oh huh
did anybody get anything new with their admission letter
guess I wasnβt rip
But pretty much only instaters get them
James scholar is a scam btw
Not worth it
Campus honors way better
I didnβt get honors either
but backed out
screw dat
Anything to get me to reduce my tuition
oop, where
is James scholar common
campus is much smaller, ~200 i think?
theres several honors programs
On the other hand half my friends are JS
which uh, kinda defeats teh purpose lol
ik quite a few JS
the main motivation (unfortunately) seems to be registration priority lol
Yea
Don't worry Abt JS
It's pretty tiring
You gotta do so much stuff
And most ppl I know dropped it
no Iβm just trying to gauge how competitive I was
what abt merit scholarships Iβm grainger are they rare
havent heard anyone but i never asked either
They basically don't give JS to anyone out of state
D:
some of the smartest grainger students I know
CS too
dont get JS
its just an instate thing mostly
I know people with 1200 SATs in state getting JS
but 1600 and international awards oos not getting it
(not to quantify it off of SAT scores)
ofc but just a measure to show how its much easier for instaters to get it
eh
very rare, you have to apply to most of them
im not denying that its rigorous or particularly fair
almost all my instate friends are JS
none of my OOS friends are
I dont know a single OOS admitted JS
campus honors too I think
they tend to favor instate
makes sense too though, cause I'm sure the creator of the james scholar program wanted more instate students to get it
i mean in-state has priority regardless as a public uni
yea
I guess so
but like ASU honors program takes a bunch of OOS
and psu too I think
and their honors programs are way more stacked than us
lol
almost chose psu honors over uiuc
wait rlly? I thought they were reviewed with the admissions application
thatβs what finaid told me
Iβm in state π
yea there are some you get considered for
but later on you need to apply to them
well its harder in cs
where everyone is cracked af
they can't make all cs majors JS
ye
plus if you really wanna know
how competitive you were
check your admissions file
once you get in
I kinda regretted it though
cause they basically said i was the bottom admit for stats+cs
lmaoo
my file was boring
like maybe a paragraph of comments
though they were putting my admission on the condition that music also wants me
so idk the records on the interview/audition
I had so many comments π
4 reviews
Of my application
Tbh the way the AO talked to me Abt it
Almost felt like they knew me
xd, they allocate more if borderline
Cause I think they spent a lot of time debating my app
:p its ok
hey and youd kick ass there
Fr
schreyer?
Yep
Ngl I thought so much abt it
Still came to uiuc in the end
Yea I wrote 16 essays π
bruh
in a far universe i could be in UT doing music comp
and $200k in debt
ideally killin it tho lol
texas music ed and band programs based
Ahhh
unfortaunte
Iβm just stressing abt getting scholarships lmao
Wait is UT that much more expensive
pain of being intl needing aid π
Where is the admission letter
:(( i justified by taking 2 gap semesters
Wait are u instate?
and cheaper rent
I am
But non citizen
ahhh
Ahh
so in state tuition but no aid
Yea I'm intl top
massive L
student loans prob get you
Not much
can u defer enrollment at uiuc
maybe 1 year at cc could be good?
whatβs parkland
Yea that way you can attend uiuc events
they're nearby here and you could get the uni experience with parkland for a year
It's the CC next to uiuc
ahh
they have a pathway program but you dont need it for ur particular situation it hink
is it expensive to live there tho
generally no
Yea that was my backup
See what aid you get
if you can defer and get parkland, that actually sounds kinda sweet
Do u qualify for instate tuition
That's gonna make ur life easier already
I get Illinois MAP grant 7k
so cost should be 33k ish
Everything added up
Yea fees housing tuition etc
oh
Tbh u could loan what u don't have
screw that
remember that ur housing and food can be much cheaper outside fo dorm and meal plan
And be an RA
thatβs what Iβm trying but options are limited cuz idk who can co-sign for me
who tf spend 6k on food a semester
6k covered my housing AND food for fall sem i think
Bruh tf
Yea true 6k too much
iirc, thats the mealplan cost
Would I rent at parkland
3meals everyday averages to $11/meal i think
near
Ur first year gonna be expensive
Ah
whatβs RA
It's like 20k ish a year
resident assis*
Resident assistant
ooh
You manage the dorms and get free living space
free housing but thats basically it
is that hard to get
And do some on campus jobs
my RA was overworked to hell tho, cant recommend exactly
Ah they do?
Yea I believe
dont take interet loans if you can
Yea try not to
Do u know much they loan max
But a CS degree is strong
i got about 2-3K/sem 0% interest
at this point this is all on the fin aid office
ask them
they know far better than us
Id probably have to at some point
I asked they said they didnβt have any numbers
:(( depending on what your career prospects are, can be justified
So idk if itβs like FAFSA where irs like max 5k a year
push them
or if I can loan more
get someone to advise you
Yea
should I wait until I get my finaid letter or call right away
cant hurt either way
but they prob need ur fin aid letter to help with
Yea I am trying
oh god
See what you can get out
i never had luck with those
Iβm semi finalist for jock
Not a lot but anything to reduce tuition
Yea
gl
And once you get here you'll be eligible for some stuff too
about the RA is it reasonable to expect that I could get it or is it something hard to get
reasonable
Reasonable
okay
but ig dont count on it (as with anything)
Quite a few ppl get them I think
that and summer internships should help a lot
Worse comes to worse there are really cheap places
depending, but yes
our research park pays around $20/hour, it's work but its quite good
Yea
research and TA around $12
so RA pays in addition to free housing?
like $50/month, nearly negligble
youre gonna have to go to training and organize/attend events
