#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages · Page 11 of 1
so u shouldn’t then?
Should I ask
this is not legal advice ™️
But no, I’m not going to. Could be worth asking
is it worth trying to transfer to cs from information science oos
...
They banned cs transfers
You can try CS+X but thats stil very difficult
I would go to another uni rather than gambling on a CS transfer
Can you invite me to the server in DMs
is Computer Engineering a hard major to get into for UIUC?
the ce program is probably one of the best in the nation so its incredibly competetive
moreso for rd
what about ee program
how hard is it to get into that
its probably comparable to ce. based on the fact less people admit with that major, it could be slightly easier but not much.
uiuc cs fo sure
atp I would just choose whatever is geographically or financially better
GTech better
like better college experience
uiuc kinda mid i feel
no offense
based on starting income im pretty sure uiuc is better
well yeah
is uiuc geographically better? cuz close to chicago
and feeds to firms there
uiuc is rural
its like 2 hrs away lol
yeah
both are rly good, depends on personal prefernce
yea
uiuc?
ong^
bett thanks
yes, not as much as hypsm, but it does to chicago firms
search online
i think ur righ then starting salary for uiuc cs higher than gtech
both do but uiuc starting cs salary is higher
yea its lk a party school
W. O. W.
do you know if the Math and Computer Science Major is hard to get into for UIUC?
which one do you think is easier to get into, Computer Engineering or Math & comp sci?
Seeing the starting salaries make the loans seem smaller
yeah
u can take a bag out for that loan dw dawg
give a solid few years and you'll pay that off
?
?
ye it does apparently
this is from college score card
Did yall get a letter of decision for your UIUC acceptance?
all i got was the "you are an illini"
@all
it will be available within a week
and they will mail some stuff to you
do we get like stickers :0
ohh gotchu 👍
stickers but usually no merch I think
what ur source?
a guy from uiuc told me
ohh so last year (im hoping it wasnt diff)
Bc i dont see a letter and its lowkey worrying me
nah dw no one has a letter in there yet
Decisions are coming in February and that means admitted students will be receiving some great news. We’ve included many of the communications below so you can see what students receive online, in their inbox, and in their mailbox.
myIllini Splash Page
The first place students discover they’ve been admitted is
thanks gang 🤞
They did movie nights on the quad
i got you're an illini
even during the winters?
do they mail it to intl students as well?
no
its probably complicated and costs them a lot of money if they mailed it to international students
unfortunately not
damn, this is sad : C
yea it's understandable that they dont send packages to intl students
lol
the definition I know is university of indians and university of chinese
YOOO
sheesh yall have that too
UCs have smth similar
UC Lotta Asians
HOW BAD IS UIUC CAMPUS’ LOCATION???
college town vibes
2 hrs from chicago
ye lmaooo
YA BUT IS THERE STUFF TO DO
uh not bad
LIKE COOL SHI
i think
I have shit to do here all the time
the chance to meet uc merced irl is gone
BARS AND STUFF
😭 i didn't commit yet dwwwww
my parents are saying gt >> uiuc
WEWWWWW
😭
ya
MINE R SAYING OPPOSITE
i still lwk think gt= uiuc
THEY SAYIN UIUC CS OVER GTECH CS
are u california too
NA
where
MOVED FROM WA TO BOISE ID
DONT HATE ITS LOWKEY FIRE
W
networking
lemme add u rq
socializing
yes yes
yessir
is specifically computer engineering less competitive then cs+x or any other engineering major?
anyone?
anybody know when finaid/scholarships come out
nah ce is kinda competitive
close to cs
lwk i think they're similar??
math+cs is a bit less competitive than grainger cs fs tho
No it was like a one time thing lol
Do I still have a decent shot at stats+cs if I got deferred
any UIUC students / HS seniors here that chose / are planning to choose UIUC CS or CS+X over GT CS?
just tryna get some new perspectives
I feel the opposite ngl
like GT is a hardcore stem school
whereas UIUC is much bigger and has everything
gt is better environment but classmates are all going to be in stem obviously
where as uiuc has liberal arts and is more party
bro hargun you also got accepted?YESS
ahh also bro do uk how to find indians who got in to uiuc? like is there some app to connect
oof nope. setacros on intl2usa would know though
Did anyone get in for stats+cs
did you get into cs + stat 👀
Nope still just a junior
But more people at my school got into pure cs than the cs+x programs
me
likely enough applied to exceed cs+x
UIUC cs 1250 sat and 2.75 unweighted. im so glad im legacy
CONGRATS!!!
thats some mad legacy carry
Cheers!
nepotism goes crazy
Goddamn
wait, UIUC doesn't legacy tho
dub
oh I thought they did
my mom, dad, sister, and older brothers have all attended uiuc
my mama had like 7 kids so we get a lot of tries lol
is that your address lol
yea lol
NICE BRO
Ain’t no way
i find it hard to believe you got into uiuc cs (6.7% acceptance rate) with a 1250 sat and a 2.75 gpa. you must have killer ecs but still i find it hard to believe.
wtv
we get a billion apps, the distribution will be very wide
prob shouldnt expect that to be the norm
entire family tree @ uiuc 💀
uiuc has a very strong prescence in the state so its not unheard of
anyways congrats on the acceptance thats all that matters in the end
if he really has a 2.75 gpa he is gonna die in uiuc cs
they have one of the best cs programs in the country
not necessarily–plenty of reasons why someone could have a lower gpa
dont say that, theres probably a reason for a lower gpa
im sure they will succeed
but its tough regardless, ive seen very few breeze through (even with the exceptional students)
its still a grind lmao
i can imagine fr
on a tangent, i wish more ppl (students, recruiters, etc.) respected the cs minor. it kicks ass
true.
with the amount of apps uiuc gets, wouldn't be surprised if they have an automatic filter that autorejects all extremely low gpa/sat applicants
especially considering they have a crazy turnaround time—2 months for RD this year and was just 50 days last year.
fair, but i think admissions knows thats not ideal (nor may it filter that many ppl)
does anyone know the cs+math acceptance rate
jesus bruh
uiuc the only oos public school that accepted me
💀
rejected from gt, purdue
deferred uw madison, umich
waitlisted umass
if no one got me i know uiuc got me
i got fc
yea same here
what the fuck is that
fucking shit ass school
im stil confused
u got in for cs?
ee
sick
yea
what is adv
advertising
nah its like
or more emphasis on cs
2/3 cs 1/3 adv
well
so from what im seeing
cs+x is basically like pure cs except instead of taking engineering requirements (such as physics, etc) you take courses in the X discipline, and then there are less cs technical electives
but all the important cs courses you take
mane i screwed up i did not know that was a thing
That's gonna be different this year
CS + x gets closer to pure CS every year
And some programs can be hard
CS + math CS + stat is 10%~15%
do you know the rate for comp eng and electrical eng
itd be interesting if they put out the rates for individual cs+x majors
they dont post this but probably ~10%. CE afaik is usually a little easier to get into than CS
Is it worth OOS tuition for UIUC Engineering?
yes
it also seems like they tell stats in the info session
thanks. i got in for ee which is similar to ce.
also note its probably lower this year
has anyone got their notice of admission letter?
i haven't gotten an official letter yet
it says it can take a week. just be patient
^^
Yooo ong?
Both my brothers went to uiuc then lol
is this supposed to be in email form or a physical one
Do they even ask for it in ur application tho what
nah they dont I think
its on ur admitted student checklist
I got an email saying I was admitted today but nothing else
it will be in ur portal
and it will be mailed to u w/ stickers
ok got it thanks
no im not
i already got stickers from a school visit lol 😭 i guess i'll just have a lot of stickers
so true
and you will have replacements since they probably will peel off
Just got deferred from NEU lmao
why are you posting that here

do the students make the website?
likely one of the best websites ive been in
for colleges
224 reasons
unlikely, imo it looks pretty gimmicky on mobile
what is this big ten they keep talking abt
oh lmao
200
btw i got the link from an email they sent today
idk u may have gotten it too
wait so u alr comitted?
dont u have until may 1st lol
what about cs+philosophy?
what abt OOS math+cs j curious
did everyone have the same idea thinking it was gonna be easier
25% potentially
idk i just thought it would be cool
10% ish I think
i think the 25% cs+x is kinda sus
i mean it gets more competitive each year so im not too surprised??? but i thought it would just be a bit less competitive ig
i do feel like less people would apply to cs+ling
cs+econ harder than like cs+ad tho
it depends
also if the x isn't like stats or math u rlly have to show interest in the x in ECs and essays
so in a way its not that easy idk
like cs + crop science is quite easy to get into relatively speaking
damn I ended up with my second major cuz I thought philosophy would be easier
what state r u in?
if u dont mind saying
georgia
GT?
deferred gatech before you ask
LOL
oh
dang i wasnt fast enough
he was too quick
absolutely not
GT is no lifer nerds
didnt even apply
theres nothing in athens
bro literally im not going to cal eecs if i get in
im not going to an ivy/duke/cmu if i get in
^stem programs relatively small + private school idk i feel out of place + expensive af
same with nu
icic
how expensive is cmu
ok so UCSD and UCLA
those are still in the mix
so basically for me its down to uiuc, gt, ucsd, ucla
my friend is paying 100k a year almost
we are intl tho
so idk
repeat of HS but 10x worse 💀
wish colleges in other countries were easier to apply to from america
I think I dodged a bullet with cmu then
ik like im used ot this pressure whatever but like i wanna chill in college ykwim
relatively speaking
im a cs major so obv not gonna party every weekend but like
gah damn eecs toxic af
fr
ik right
I have not partied yet here
for me at least
but still fun
not tryna shit on anyone else sry
more fun than I would have at gatech I would think
nanayang technical university my beloved
yea uiuc is def more fun than gt fs
NANYANG LETS GO
more bitches
true
misspelled lmao
is this berkeley
LOL
incomprehensible
yea
cal = berkeley
i keep forgetting that OOS ppl dont refer to Berkeley as Cal lol sry
I would think its caltech
yea i've heard that a lot
yeah i just call gt tech most of the time
uiuc
uiuc
not that ive seen
most likely. depending on my other results. im no expecting much from my other ones
btw whats the acceptance rate for EE?
about 1 and a half
scroll up
do we get any fin aid for UIUC???
after we get accepted
bc i havent heard anything regarding fin aid from em
oh ok i mean not officially
u mean like merit or fafsa?
cs+x rate is definitely going down this year right?
fs
do you guys think oos for uiuc engineering is really worth it lol
bothh do yk when they come out
yessir, i believe so
les goo
yes fs
how hard would you say the Statistics classes are at UIUC?
i know the calculus/math sequence can be tough but what about the stats classes
They should be ok
I haven't taken many yet
But I heard the profs in stats are pretty good
Today was awful
But it's rare
It's 3 degrees Fahrenheit rn
With heavy wind

U get used to it
Official letters are on myillini now btw
Mine is at least
not mine
neither is mine lol
mine isn't there
theyre probably starting to come out
@slim gorge did you get any information about aid/scholarships/honors in your letter?
No
But I called finaid today
They said they start sending finaid and scholarships late feb-march
But idk about those honors programs
ohh, thats so far away 😭
Yea 💀
can u send how ur's looks like? i can't wait anymore 😭
lmao its like any other letter
Except there's a 2nd page that lists the same info in myillini
Name residency uin major etc
And some terms and conditions stuff
Here
tyyy!
wow u also got into cs. that's impressive
im just happy w/ my admission.
what does that mean
so u count as international then?
Sort of
the illinois promise thingy right
In state tuition but no fin aid
Ye
I get a $ 7k grant from the state of Illinois but nothing else
that's still a decent amount
scholarships I think is late marc-early april
bruh ion see it
No Notice of Admission is available at this time.
lol
probably going in waves
Ye
Yea something like that
Included in tuition
looks like two semesters worth
Yea it is
where is it
what do u mean
they didnt give me direct admit to cs
letters and sciences yea
oh so ppl do get in for cs as their major?
can't you meet the requirements and get into the major r smth
yea u can
oh its guaranteed if u take some gateway classes
to get a cs major I think, and the classes are the same as those a cs major would take
ur not talking about uiuc right
yea i think he is talking about umd
ah ic
lol
and it actaully looked cancer
u die in the best way possible
idts
i should take a better look at how other cs+x are structured
cs+adv is pretty chill in terms of advertising
if you go purely by course count, we're heavier in the beginning
i took 3 cs and 3 music last sem
or do you have to perform
ok nice
also can i take more cs classes if i want?
like electives
cuz like
systems programming is not a requirement in cs+adv
but i wanna take it
abs nothing stopping you
except your personal limits
cs+x usually doesnt have many required electives
these ones are in the LAS CS+X majors
hahahahahahah 233 + 341
but adv is in the college of media
oh
it seems cs+music has to take 233/341 too
but adv doesnt
but still i wanna take it
no
i dont wanna lose out on cs education
all cs+x have the option to do 233+341 or 340+two electives
you aren't losing out, you're compromising
the entire point of the cs programs is to specialize the degrees, not to dilute it (unfortunately that's not stopping outsiders and even students from viewing it that way)
bruh i dont gaf about no damn advertising i just did it to get into uiuc cs
lmao
240 is now 340* outdated
ohh
welp
so whats the difference between 340 and 341
imo cs + adv opens some really cool opportunities in digital social sciences
uhh best to compare 233+341 to 340
also what year are u?
in a nutshell, 340 is a shallow skim of 233+341 and introduces cloud computing (thats not covered in those two courses)
soph
bruh
initially i shared the same though of wanting 233+341 bc we're particularly strong in our systems and hardware
yea
but the 340 prof convinced me not to lmao
wait u took 340?
am auditing it rn
no, let me clarify
ok
im not sure why you arent presented with this option
to my understanding, this option is meant for all CS+X
i suppose so, this is a new introduction
depends what you want to do
imo 341 is just solidly hard and for the overwhelmingly large audience that wants the SWE-life, 340 is much more relevant
btw, most of our CS courses have websites with significant public access
hell, 340 lecture recordings seems to be public
who said 340 wont challenge you
at the end of the day, you can do whatever you want as long as you also finish your deg reqs
I thought y’all were talking about ECE 340
And was Gonna say lmao thags one of the hardest classes
Just the coa calculator
I'm probably gonna go the old route of 233 + 341
Every tho it's the most time consuming course in the whole core curriculum
What r u studying in UIUC ?
Once you come out you understand every thing inside a computer and how it works
Statistics and computer science
Idk
And/or develop data analysis software?
Rn my internship for summer is software engineer
So maybe software engineer
But maybe wanna do machine learning engineering or smth
Data analysis seems like something too ez for me LOL
I wanna do something with more value and more challenge
Like a business major with excel knowledge could probably be a data analyst
I see i see
😭
Data analysts crying rn
Nah but the IS majors seem to have data analyst down their path
Would rather be building complex pipelines and deep learning stuff
Than doing that
Machine Learning engineer
Deep learning engineer
Etc
Data scientist perhaps
Or maybe SWE with an emphasis on AI
Or NLP since I'm minoring in linguistics
Yea
Tbh that's the best part of CS + x
SWE + whatever combo your X gives you
Are your job choices
Yea
Me fr fr
@tender matrix got denied first choice major in the business school but got accepted for urban studies and planning, do you know anything about that major
Oooh were you the person who posted on the uiuc subreddit?
I am not too knowledgeable about that major tbh
no? if it’s about my major can you send the thread
Ahh nevermind cause I saw someone post their acceptance to urban studies on the uiuc subreddit
ohhh okok
i’m looking to go into business with a focus in real estate but uiuc doesnt really have a real estate program in their business school anyway
idk if urban planning is too far off to get into that field though
this is literally me, i clutched up lmfao
uiuc gang ig
Hmm maybe you could ask in reddit
Cause I have no idea about that
you'd be surprised; don't turn away from anything straight to
not all stats is making an ml model
true, though i find that not as useful for your track as 340 would be
ya don't need to know verilog for AI
True but I'm just interested in systems
It's more of a personal interest choosing the 233 + 341 path
fair enough
I could take electives whenever I need to anyway
Stats electives I have priority for anyway
mhm
True but idk
Pipeline engineering seems fun
your opinions may change wildly, stay open
True
uiuc notice of admission when
goooogle
march 3rd I think
Hello 🫵👁️🫵🌊rs
I am perhaps maybe (definitely) coping with rejection by submitting an appeal form
Now
I got rejected for cs 1st choice and math 2nd choice
So in your opinions how stupid is it to try for math+cs bc im highkey at a loss LMAO
i think you know the answer
do u think its a place where u can realistically get an appeal tho lol
ik rejection sucks, im sorry u got rejected wherever u did, but its just something we gotta experience to let ourselves grow, and imo, sometimes its just meant to be. if its only you coping with rejection, save yourself the time and effort from that appeal form, but if something significantly important actually happened / changed in ur application, then maybe those might be good grounds to request an appeal
Not really but its an option to me more bc there isnt much i can lose aside from time thinking about it
Idk like
Uiuc was the top option that i thought if i was lucky maybe i had a chance if that makes sense?? Like a reach but the lowest of them (them including mit, cmu, and cornell, all of which i expect rejections but im just shooting my shot)
And im split between math+cs or cs+phil here hence why im asking bc math+cs to me is the most iffy but the most realistic (as in i have the additional math classes which would be relevant here)
Idk like i wouldnt say i was blindsided or anything, its just awkward thinking abt appealing and if it's worth it bc the only thing theyd look at maybe is 2 additional math classes im taking
fair. just don't go overboard on urself, like it's really not worth it (hopefully you aren't coming into that appeal form expecting your decision to change)
not worth stressing over it for 2 reasons, 1. you're gonna do well wherever you end up and laugh at how you were so stressed about this rejection in retrospect, and 2. if you really really care that much about UIUC, apply to transfer in there after a year or 2 at the college you end up in after graduation
UIUC is like georgia tech, has a solid transfer program going for them
but I think UIUC transfer is a lot easier than tech's
does anyone have experience with studying abroad at uiuc?
i know a few people but ymmv depending on where and field of study, but haven't heard anything bad from my limited scope
most people would note that math& has a significantly lower rate than +phil, but i think that's just missing the point
you're welcome to appeal but there's a thousand others who want to milk the extra .2% chance of getting in
everyone here has had their shot at the school and major. our admissions isn't fair (i respect their efforts to be fair) and everyone's desperation isn't making that process better
hm
im a bit in between
if i dont have any options at the end of rd
how's uiuc's math program?
i got accepted math, but not sure if i want to pay oos tuition compared to just going meche at my state school
which has a pretty solid meche program
anyone know what uiuc materials science engineering acceptance rate is?
nope
is it a good idea to write a letter of continued interest to them
they havent mentioned it so im not sure if its a good idea
so i asked on the uiuc reddit
apparently ur advisor can substitute cs233+341 instead of 340
R internships hard to get as a freshman
If you work hard for it
Not really
I mean in the end you choose the classes so you can do whichever one
id really want to, but idk if I'd have enough knowledge/experience from only a years worth of classes
do u think just classes were enough or did u have a lot experience out of class
pick what you want to study, but our math is a little underwhelming imo
survivorship bias
our local area and RP make it a lot more accessible, even during hiring freeze (which impacts new grads more)
don't fully depend on classes, but they do quite a bit
our intro course is OOP, and then we kick your ass the spring after with C++ hehe
I dont like debugging c++
Is UIUC good with credits? I've take the 2 ap cs
ah
but uh don't be in such a rush unless you have a good reason to
mostly for like engineering related
yea ap cs is usefuless here
based on the list
cs too
but if you have some stuff on ur resume you can prolly get an internship
but you can come in with a crap ton of credits which is cool
makes intro a lot easier, but not a substitute
Like projects?
ye
Ah
a project or two is really good, but don't end up with Todo lists
we have some very accessible groups under our cs student org
you'll find out later
chill for now
that's more than i did
varies, but fresh seem to hover around 15-25
location matters
you don't get to choose lol
damn thats good could rlly help with costs
yea
ok ill stop bugging u but last question, have u found the cost of attendance calculator to be accurate
Like in terms of supplies and living expenses
nah you good, i only get tired of the cs admissions bs
uhh i think uiuc provides one
more difficult to predict financial aid but as oos i receive nearly nothing regardless
Ah
so the only changes i mind to calculate was how many semesters and apartment cost
Well not aid necessarily
How much do u think u spend beyond tuition or housing
And fees
the calculator factors in personal spending i believe
so prob not much beyond say transportation to and from, any major purchases (dorm furnishing, laptop, etc)
id say that your biggest cost deviation will be housing after fresh year, assuming you go for an apt with ur groceries
very, few pros to dorms
better than dorms (and cheaper?)
but our apt market is terrible
oh
technically the dorms arent thaaat $. i did a basic cost check and it's $700/month for me, it's the meal plan that scams
Freshmen are required to stay in dorms tho right
yes, google any exceptions
ye
Can freshmen stay in private certified housing
does anyone know if there's a remote chance to transfer from cs+x to cs or computer engineering? or can we take all the upper level cs courses (e.g. Operating Systems, etc) as cs+x major?
pure cs no transfer
and also is this a meme or do uiuc kids really not shower (especially the grainger ones)
i thiiiiink so but Google
generally don't recommend it
grainger cs? zero. unsure about CE but regardless, you better have a damn good reason and show it
CS+X are not diluted CS degrees
you have equal course registration priority
meme (also more towards ECE) but as with any college, there'll be a few stinkers
so you'd have a better chance at transferring into a CS+X?
it's not "impossible" like pure cs
transfer between cs+x is likely pretty easy, with the exception of space limitations
which ones?
tranferring into cs+x from within the LAS works too?
possible but don't count on it
interesting
there's a whole dorm tier list or something on reddit
someone definitely asked what ppls opinions are about options
wow
this is nice
i can get an apartment then
do you think its worth to dorm first year?
apt prices are rising and all the landlords suck (slow maintenance, not giving security deposit back, etc.) but you'll live
no, but you have to lol
i fanangled $500/month w/o utilities for an okay place
u have roommates right?
yeah
could i get a place with like
$1500 split between my friend and i
something decent
maybe $2k
so like $1k a person
abso-freaking-lutely
do note that more $$ is not necessarily better; honestly a lot of our "luxury" options seem to have maintenace problems too
ic
you can do the math for how much housing costs, i just was lazy and subtracted meal plan cost
uhhhh
how much do the indirect costs total up to per semester?
we costco every 2-3 weeks with occasional smaller grocery runs in between, i'd say 400 for 3 ppl for 3 weeks, not including eating out
elaborate pls
like just the cost of laundry, eating out, and just general keeping a "lifestyle"
varies widely, idk how you'd live
well I live a minimalistic livestyle lol
eating out isn't particularly cheap, id say $12-16 a meal with some exceptions
theres $4 pizza and chipotle bowl is $10
okay thats quite good actually
a boba is $5-7 lol
either included in your uni housing or hopefully you have an in-unit in apt
no quarters
free bus
wow
quite an extensive bus system, though harder to depend on during weekends and at night
(its bc u paid for it in ur uni fees lol)
a car is nice here (parking is atrocious, $700/year? my guess) but not essential. makes traveling to the downtown of the twin-towns harder but not inacessible
i bus everywhere you get used to it
yeah I like that too
umm
cause I will definitely not be driving to downtown as an engineering major lol
the time
so uh my spending this month lmao:
- $700 on rent + utilities
- $200 eating out LOL HELP ME
- $200 groceries? not sure bc i dont buy my groceries separetely
- $100 on bs
well it's likely a <20 minute walk
our downtowns are nice and cozy
ohhhh
small town vibes, though champaign and campustown are looking like chicago-wannabees
so like from my school to my house distance (~0.7 miles) lol
@tired robin do u have a car?
yeah I'll start immersing myself in the UC environment
no, roomate does
oh
you have plenty of time
thanks, so cs+x majors can also take advanced cs electives in junior and senior year? is there a max number of courses a student is allowed to take in a semester?
as long as you satisfy two requisites, you can do any CS class anytime
i got my acceptance letter
fr
depends on the class
Means you have a skill issue, that's all
😈

calc
might be an L
for calc 3 you get one test drop
for calc 2, it depends on ur prof
dont bomb the tests
yeah thats my physics c class rn
the question is how do you retake the final if thats the only grade
smh
do most people do well then
like what percent of the class gets a 90%
if you know
For calc?
sure
The average is like a C I think lol
wtf
Yea don't do calc here
bj stop scaring me
If you can
i dont blame him
they be adding arbitrary cs + x programs instead of adding more seats to the cs program
I'm dying in calc here
Yeah calc 1/2 is known as weedout across unis
i think i have to if i come
If only you were allowed to take the AP exam 😔
what is the best prof for calc
Fr damn
😭
lowkey valid
Do the prof test or take it at a CC
Physics here ain't easy either
Same level as calc
wait how hard is multi here?
I'm taking it rn
^
Idk if I'm dumb or smth
ohkk
so true'
