#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages Ā· Page 9 of 1
we'll see :))
i got rejected
best school i got into so far was uiuc
in state for UCs tho
im happy tho
i want to appeal from comp eng to cs+phil ā¦
my gpa was shit and im from the bay
my parents are gonna push for me to go to Cal/UCLA so hard lol
oh yeah but between uiuc and gt i would pick gt
its not that simple
If you got into pure CS choose Gt
Wait which did you get
yea i got GT CS
comp eng
Why would you wanna switch
wait i liked the math+cs thing at uiuc tho lol
Comp Eng is the second hardest major
i didn't just apply for the slightly higher acc rate
lol
Math + CS isnāt the engineering school
i mean that was one factor tho
no i got in
then why u appealing
just regretting my major
for first major?
yea ik, but we still have access to all the cs/eng research and classes
right??
Why would you regret it
comp eng is a great major!
Yes but your degree isnāt from grainger
yea bruh idc about that lol
Bit less opportunity
ik but i like the cs+x program a lot more
I wouldnāt be so sure
its honestly perfect
nah it is im sure
did u apply to that?
Glad to know youāre sure
didnt know about it š„²
they mainly care about ur resume and like interviews and stuff
A lot of people disagree here
degree they just see CS from a decent uni with a decent GPA
i applied a week after they opened apps
I donāt know any internship that cares about leetcode for fresh
wait yea i mean math+cs = cs from what initially thought but also what other uiuc students said so yea
what if i got in for a second choice major but want my first choice?
could you use appeal for that?
for rejections
hypothetically
pretty sure
@strong fox enlighten fregley
about appeals
at uiuc
With what
Like change major?
ill shoot them an email tomorrow about it
@tender matrix thoughts on cs vs math+cs for like SWE jobs? just tryna get a second perspective
If heās accepted it depends
Like what you were accepted for and what to transfer into thatās not really appealing though
anyway so was it just down to osu and uiuc, or was there smth else you were initially considering? like did u go from more colleges --> osu and uiuc --> uiuc or directly to osu and uiuc --> uiuc if that makes sense
He can transfer into any major he wants then if he got in for compE
Not really but itās probabky@fine
CompE is the second hardest major to get into, behind CS which you canāt transfer into
how hard is ee
ok thatās comforting
UF was my favorite, I got denied from it tgoufg somehow
EE is very hard
EE and Ce are not easy
It was between wisco, UIUC, and OSU
thanks noah
it probably is hard to study too
Np mate
what r ur courses noah
oh uw madison p good right
Iām taking computer systems
yes
One sec
can someone explain call week?
Yeah it is
are the ge requirements difficult at grainger?
and also, what happens if you call them for a decision appeal (they say call them before submitting an appeal form)
No theyāre stupid
UIUC has so DOPE ECE classes
imo uiuc
good
i honestly hate stem besides cs
grainger comp eng people are the only ones I've seen looking down on non-grainger cs ngl š¤
that was my common app essay yall š«¢
.
.
K
please
thats what im sayin š
i dont think it matters lmao
ba or bs its still an engineering degree
i donāt understand why people care about it
@strong fox so in your ig bio, do you put uiuc '2x ? or do you put something with your major, like i gotta differentiate myself from the mfs that got in with the 60% acceptance rate on google
I put UIUC 26 and tagged grainger LOL
š„
ā¦
must be done
do yall care that much about prestige im sorry
yea
i got rejected š
i just like the school š„
Oh
Itās also a 40% acceptance rate now but like
google has not updated..
Acceptance rate doesnāt mean jack shit
ye but uiuc is my top choice
imma put "incoming freshman intending to study computer science at university of illinois at urbana champaign's grainger college of engineering" šÆ
use up that char limit bro
fr
idk if im gonna put it in my bio
overall admit rate at UIUC?
till everything else is out
aaaa can't wait for uiuc rd to come out
Look at the website I sent
ill just do a commitment post if i commit š
It says all public admit rates
should've just done ea but tons of miscommunication regarding finances with parents š
ppl dont look at ts they look at google bro
LMFAOOO
starring that shit
is cs + math closer to 25.4% or closer to 6.7%
hoping for it to be the former but it's probably the latter š
for me i'd have to tag math+cs or smth š
frickkk i see wym
no way im tagging lsa
Tag LAS
tag @IllinoisCS
or just CS
@strong fox how are internship opportunities for yall these days?
just tag DGS so people underestimate you and then bag an HRT internship first year š
Hit or miss
faang jobs seem hard to come by now
oh yea fs
I applied to one and got it
My friend is not quite in fang but he got a Microsoft internship
Another one got an Amazon one
Mines fortune 200
my goal in college is to get an internship at apple
damn internships in freshman year š„
Thereās plenty of opportunities
You donāt get a compE internship freshmen year straight up
cs + math isnt part of cs + x
its older than cs + x
well ofc
but in the long run
ECE internships are only CS basically for frosh
can cs+x access cs career fair?
Yes
cool
are cs+x treated as second class citizens?
big tech has always amazed me i think itd be a great place to learn before entering the workforce
Not really
But I think some options are locked behind pure CS
wait
Sems
u cant take systems programming as a cs+x?
oh niceee
What course code is systems programming
wait is physics e&m like the APPC equivalent or
oh
Give me course code
oh so no ap credit for that?
CS241 i think
Is it ECE
but i thin you can take it
Oh?
you can take other courses that arenāt designated as ece tho right?
Why canāt you take it then
Yes you need to
good š„²
Only if you get a 5 on phys C
i need a good dose of history classes to remain sane
sweet
what is phys c
Iām taking a class called extraterrestrial life as my tech elective š
not curve
Thatās for sure not CE
i mean the percentage needed for a 5
wait c is mech
ap course
C is also E &M
there's both
my school does each for a sem
Mech and EM
some schools just do mech the entire year i think
we only have e&m at my school
damn what
nah but a lot of mech just is pre req in a way
like kinematics esp
and forces
and momentum
o ok
wait
oh
we cant get out of cs124/cs128 with ap credit?
The average test score for Phys mech was 73%
yea
ic
Just take the prof test
ok
no i took normal physics as a freshman but instead of taking 1 i was recommended into e&m
Itās like an AP test but for UIUC classes
CS225?
yea
Why? Lol
You wonāt take it before second sem
yea
Bruh
worddddd
as long as i take it on my second semester
Yall are doing internships wrong š
whats that coding interview book?
Leetcode isnāt important
bro ion wanna do humanities courses in college tho š
onw to b&n rn š
For freshmen internships they donāt give a shit about leetcode
No thanks I got one lmao
they all do care about it
From doing 0 leetcode
I got mine and the company knows Iām bad at CS
majority do
google step has a coding interview
what they care bout then
its like an easy leetcode problem tho
Screw discord formatting
I got it cause I had leadership skills and good collaboration skills
Cause those you canāt teach
Technical skills yoy can
Teaching how to be a leader is significantly harder than teaching cs
not imo
not true imo
Agree to disagree
good is subjective and relative š
im glad i can finally watch uiuc videos without mentally noting that i might not get in
LMAO FR
True it is
feels great
ill be happily watching vlogs this weekend
But companies teach you what you need to as an intern
time to binge day in the life vids
They donāt expect you to know a lot of things
But they wonāt spend time on someone who canāt collaborate
@strong fox how are councelors at uiuc
Mid
Mine made me feel uncomfy
I heard itās hard to switch counselors
So I just donāt talk to mine ever
what do they do?
Thatās just my experience
Mine was like
Half shirtless
I could see half his chest hair
is it mainly stuff with course planning?
Yeah
ā¦
But mine didnāt help me
I said I wanna take this this and RHAT
He said I sounded confident and kicked me out
um what
are they flexible?
stay safe
I do dw
Itās never alone
Thereās like rentable bikes my friends and I just rent them
how did you show that to the company?
ok but its not like
most people ik aren't even getting interviews
Just be with friends thats all
including a few at uiuc grainger cs
known for being unsafe like usc
My resume was all leadership from high school
ah
I told them straight up
I barely have CS experience
They know
Iām not lying, they just see my potential
Afaik no
Iāve felt safe here
About UIUC crime?
Lmao
I will say
My biggest peace of advice
Is what nobody believes me about lol
A. You donāt need an internship freshmen year
B. At the end of the day, CS skills are a lot easier to find than social skills. Even if youāre great with experience on a resume, if you canāt collaborate or lead you wonāt get hired.
If you have tech skills at a decent level with great leadership and whatnot, thatāll beat someone out with better CS experience
i dont think you do either. im gonna try going about college as independently as possible
Your character matters, especially in CS
i succumbed to a lot of peer pressure in hs and i dont want to do that anymore
Peer pressure is different than leadership
no i mean
with this stuff
Yeah
or with choosing classes
with classes i just took classes that i saw everyone else take
wrong thread, nvm sorry
my extracurriculars are where i had freedom
and all of mine ecs were humanities based except for the research i did
Side note
Squirrels on campus are scary
They get very close
Like very close
Like I almost kicked one a couple days ago
And Iāve seen people straight up pick them up
bro its the illinois squirrels
or at least where uiuc
rural af
There is a squirrel watching club j think
Itās not Illinois squirrels
Itās UIUC squirrels
corn school as @frank kernel prefers
Mercede
urban squirrels hella shy
ik but i didnt wanna add another letter to mine
since mercede is still close to merced
Wb merce debenz
acc thats dumn nvm
yea nvm lmao
do u get this
cheese touch
he was j active
Ok
So
I talked to my CS + X friend
Opportunity will be pretty similar
You just take less CS classes/ your background wonāt be as good
Which can impact how you capitalize on your opportunities
So youāll land the same interviews but tech skills will be diff
This was the night before
Took jt a few
NOTIRIOUSLY?
Well
Are you@from Bay Area?
Yeah lmao
Then itāll be cold for you
I live near Chicago
So itās not really much colder for me
Itās 20F here and I slee with my window wide open
Why
sorry i messed up š„²
Cause itās nice sleeping in the cold
will not happen again i just pressed some buttons by accident in rapid succession
Wait whatās that university near Chicago the really prestigious one
apology accepted
bro is frosty the snowman š
20 degrees is crazy
northwestern?
Northwestern I think
Northwestern or uchicago
Nah
I couldnāt afford either
Nor did I want to go to either
UIUC is also much better than uchicago and better than northwestern
150 people in my class applied Stanford
Just because we live close to it
And the prestige obviously
Thatās crazy
In engineering
Yes
8 accepted last year
Well idk overall probably
Our school is cracked
How badly does changing ur major after submitting affect ur chances
Like if I applied rd
And I want to change now after the rd deadline
It just says "may be at a disadvantage"
what does priority admission status mean
i think your best bet is to email admissions but also, generally, if you switch majors now, your essays wont match and will in turn, not benefit your application
good luck tho š
What major did you apply for and what do you wanna switch into
if u get deferred do u still have this
im confused
ok i reread it and understand now
i was just talking about the 1st bullet point in this pic
i thought the priority admission status was something u carried over to rd if u got deferred
if you were admitted ea, this is what the appeal form states
Info science + data science
To cs + stats
wait whatās the program/term change form?
that just means you go to RD for another major
Youāll have a lower acceptance rate
?
Yeah
But I'm just worried about the disadvantage from switching major
Youāll be at one
what about stats to cs+stats(if cs was my first choice)?
So like worse chances than other cs ppl?
Yes
u can transfer while ur there
I got in but if I decline offer would it affect others applying from my school in the future ?
no
š
how hard is stuff like math -> math+cs?
Hard
šæ
i dont think so
Absolutely no difference
Actually the math + CS people I know have gotten higher salaries than the CS Grainger right out of college
My sample size is small
But they are starting out with 200k or smth
Good luck š«”
@tall mirage I feel like math + CS just looks better cause it's such a great combo
So yea don't worry about employment for the major at least
But if you don't like math then I would consider a bit about the major
Fr
They are hella aggressive sometimes and ain't scared of humans
I was surrounded by one before
Wow
And this is a pic of what the uiuc quad looked like a few days ago
UIUC
I got a lot of pics
It's a hobby of mine to photograph campus
This is green Street, where all the restaurants and stores are
And this is ikenberry, one of the dorms
THIS LOOKS SO COOL WTF
Ayyy thanks
Green is really beautiful
I got a few more
omg
i literally can see myself here @fathom bolt šš
wtf wow
they want me so bad
its so pretty 𤩠sunset pics for days š
Lmaooo
One of them makes it cost money to post
What a scam
Lmao sorry for spamming images
But this gotta be my favorite pic I've taken at uiuc
There are some ungodly clouds here
yoo 20% of UIUC students are Asian
where do you see the admission decision?
iāve been staring at my application and I donāt see any letter
Did you already get a decision?
Or are you looking for the letter
Press into your application
The musical instrument thing
And there is a button to view your application
view status
Yea
done
You got in?
ea
Interesting
Uhh I would email them and ask
But maybe cause it's the fine arts college
There is a possibility they moved you to Rd but I would check with them
this is beautiful
Thanks š
kk
uhh i don't know any students there and how their culture is but the discipline seems very cool imo
but people have different ideas to what's worth it, figure out what would influence your decision
yeah that is inconclusive:( yay BM applicant tho, rare to see
okay great thanks!
Applied for CS but got in for Pol Sci, second choice all the way wohoo
Guess I'll have to take a CS Minor if I end up going here
technically cs+x is required to take less but aside from a computer ethics course, they just don't need to take many CS electives. nothing stopping them from taking more, nor are they a core part of the CS degrees
congrats!
if you want to study CS, imo don't come here to count on a minor or transfer
I actually wouldn't mind a Pol Sci degree, but yeah I get your point
though i do think our minor is kinda tough, not sure if that rigor comes through to recruiters, grad AOs, and the relevant public
With my current EA acceptances, I would chose UW Madison Comp Eng over UIUC
But let's see how RD goes
I agree with meh inc, CS + x can have the same depth as CS Grainger
You can technically do the whole CS Grainger part of it if uwant cause we got same priority as CS Grainger
lol there's so many BS uiuc social media groups. i personally mainly pay attention to:
- @illinibarstool
- @illinois1857 (wtv the main account is)
- r/UIUC
- major/club related discords
don't think i regularly check a single CO202X group, though was on the FB and discord early on
I've only been to legends so far
For the ACM happy hour š
Can't wait to be 19 I guess
imo grainger has designed the CS majors right (on the CS side), the shallow public impression overrates grainger and underrates +X
hurrryy
sounds like quant lmao, not an expectation someone should have but certainly possible
i feel like our quant network is very exclusive but that's just my initial impression
Yea that's true
No it definitely is
We have one of the best quant connections of all universities in America
And this isn't just a subtle brag, it's truly crazy the connections we got with the quant industry
Agreed
??? It's not really gatekept
hmm i should amend that statement
Like there are tons of quant companies that come in for talks
And tons of networking possible
And you apply to quant companies theyll look at you
well
Like I almost got a freshmen internship at a firm that deals with Fintech and quant
I wasn't gonna do pure quant but they wanted me to do some Fintech stuff
Too bad I was waitlisted in the end but like I'm a damn freshmen I got p far
we're on the whitelist but I'm asking about student orgs
And I think it's cause of the connections
Ahhh student orgs that's different
Yea it's stupid how you have to apply
i don't wanna dedicate myself to quant
I'm happy to see their lifestyle and learn from that env but not keep at it
I think it's that one
lolol
š
the projects are pretty fun, barring the tedious python classes representing every Western music entity
LOL
do yOU wanna do pitch math
Um I have no idea how it works
I suppose it'd be something worth trying
Audio computing underrated
hertz <-> pitch class <-> note name
Ah
we are switching profs bc retirement, very curious (and worried) abt tbe new prof
we also have an audio coding class
499C, in a fall-spring sequence
Right
lectures on YT, search eli fieldsteel
theres also the computer music project by tipei but ive been sus about it for moving it to the iSchool
and the course on it seems more informative than hands on
Aightt
also holy sht the subreddit is having a stroke
actually ehhh nvm bc i sorted by new LOL was receiving all the CS transfer bs
LOL
Yea it always becomes like that
Oh shit I gtg
I forgot I have to be in Siebel soon š
what for
i wish i wasnāt deferred
would have loved to been a member of the league of linguists
I hope you get in rd
thanks š¤
does anyone know how feasible it is to study abroad if you're doing a cs + x major?
i don't expect cs+x, or any major really, to impact study abroad
but id look into what we offer for study abroad specifically for cs, your X, etc
we do have a city scholars program which ships you to chicago for a semester, tho that's not exactly abroad
alr thanks
sorry, wdum by this?
Like if you don't like math
The major will be tiring
oh yea
Cause you need a lot more math than pure cs
i love math
You'll be fine then
wait isn't it mainly cs?
CS math stuff is cool
It is
i was thinking like 2/3 CS 1/3 math
But you are still taking like 4 or 5 more math classes than Grainger
i still think i have been acidentally admitted
i already got out of 3 out of the 6 math req things so im chillin i think
Granted when I mean more CS based, I mean the csmath classes
There are classes that combine both
Like graph theory

@tender matrix which path is better for quant
Cause quant lol
@tall mirage also comparatively more CS than other CS + x
Like CS + anthrology has almost no CS anthro overlap
But stats and CS, math and CS have quite a bit of overlap
yepp
Those also donāt count as CS + X
isn't cs+econ best for quant
No but sometimes it looks like a double major even though it's not
Nah
CS + math is
why is that?
Quant?
the thing is i like the prospects of quant but i hv never tried how it works
actually its only microecon in quant
not macro
so in a way + econ is kinda extra ig
YO
WAIT
can we like do cs and math from grainger
i dont want to be stuck with math. i ll try few classes then see
Yes LMAO
that's hillarious
Quant is more about Math
Like cause you analyze data
Stats is also good for quant
Yeppp no CS + x too LOL
so does uiuc allow it as double major or is it only CS+X path
i dont want to leave grainger
nah but tech industry won't care as much about agriculture than math for the second thingy
whoever chose to make that the official naming system is such a genius
imagine how many recruiters got trolled
You can double degree
With math
So you have to apply to LAS
cool i ll try that
Yea LOL
Mines did
I told my recruiters
after getting into cs, transferring to cs+x looks weird. so i ll double degree
there wwont be much difference in course load?
cs+ math vs cs and maths dual
Thatās diffeeent
huh
ohh
but ill feel clown to transfer to cs+math
so i m asking cs and math dual degree is possible right?
but why
disagree imo
also pretty sure math&cs etc share the same curriculum structure as cs+x, literally only the name differs because it's one of our older programs and we never bothered changing the name
u would need to meet some requirements
idk the specifics but the bar is very high, not to mention we still have way more people than spots
Cs + math and CS + stats is harder to transfer in than other CS + x
That's why some don't consider it CS + x
bruh
@tender matrix when will uiuc invite new admits for campus tours?
yes there's a lower rate because im sure so many apply because they think it's better for being harder... welcome to the cycle
LAS isnt doing favors by maintaining that old naming scheme lol
iām surprised i havenāt seen any stats + cs admits so far
hmm how big is the program? i suppose larger than the typical 15/year for the broader cs+x
does uiuc send anything cool in the mail @tender matrix
lol didn't for me smh but prob usual stickers and envelope of stuff
utah sent me a (cheap but still) power bank
B.S Mathematics and Computer Science or CS, any difference in admission rate?
didn't get my cool UT poster:( y no pay for my oos mail
yes, google pls
we're tired of CS FAQs
Couldn't particularly find anything
Seems Mathematics and CS as well as Stats and CS are exceptions to the 25% CS+X acceptance rates
an acceptance letter and stickers
please pray for rd š
I think sometime in april
They are
the portal says they wonāt accept any new recommendations or 7th semester grades for deferred students
does this mean i shouldnāt submit grades
and should i submit first marking period grades since they were required for rd?
and is 7th semester same as midterm?
can i schedule a tour online and go earlier if i want?
Hmm I think you might be able to
Dm me for any questions hall have
Tyler,
Thank you for your interest in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign! You applied to a very competitive major, and we want to determine how you and your strengths fit into this year's entire first-year applicant pool. For this reason, we've decided to defer your application.
You'll receive a final decision on our second notification date of March 3. To ensure a consistent and fair review process, we won't consider any additional information other than what was provided in your initial application. However, we will continue to accept new test scores until this date.
Staff will not be available to discuss your deferred decision via phone, and we do not discuss decisions via email. Please know that although we haven't made a final decision yet, we do recognize your strong academic credentials!
I just got this too š
which major?
CS
I got that for stats+cs
ahh, iām cs+ling
Wonder if they only deferred cs or cs+x people š¤
Someone I know got denied stats+cs
did they submit test?
Yeah
ik a bunch of people who got rejected for cs but not cs+x
any defers get this email too ^^ ?
I got deferred from stats+cs
but to be fair i know way less people who applied cs*x
i got that, deferred cs+ling
Yeah
they recognized my credentials as well W
they rejected a bunch
lmfaoo
not potential
i think this means that we are technically good enough for our programs it just depends on how much room they have lmao
no it doesnt
it just means its the standard defer letter lmao
iām srsly about to end up at THE ohio state university
oh lol.
i assumed that is what differed rejections from deferred
deferred from umich and uiuc CS
and the rest of my decisions are ivy / cmu, caltech, mit, stanford š
nah my friend got rejected and had 36 and perfect gpa
its not based on stats
me too, also deferred from uw madison, and i was rejected from umd
my only acceptances are safeties
oh damn
maybe some ivy will take me
oh shit fr
i have a 35 and a perfect gpa
but my ECs are ass
so
i have a 1500 and far from perfect gpa
however my class rigor is highest possible
uiuc was rejecting rlly qualfiied applicants
and i have very good lors and essays
like USAMO and usaco plats and stuff
and other cracked gods
i think they r maybe looking for ppl that aren't nerds
idk
as well as demonstrated interest in linguistics (although i accidentally left out most of my ling ecs)
idk how i even got in tbh. college admissions are so random.
fr same
they didnt recognize mine
but it doesnt matter
UMD >
^
probably uiuc
r lots of cs majors involved in greek life
uiuc is a party school except cs and eng kids
Professional or social?
social
also is there a uiuc 27 discord
That I wouldnāt say is true
And a good amount of social
And yes there is a 27 discord
W
can i have an invite
Lemme find link
ty
uiuc
is that for committed people or accepted people

Either
ya
noah, what type of dorm do u live in?
and how are the off campus options
I live in PAR (Carr hall to be exact)
I am very far south, farthest possible from my classes
f
I live on a coed floor, and bathrooms are singles but shared
how likely is it that a freshman has a class before 10 am
Very
fuck
how about before 9 am
PHYS211, which is common for any stem major, has lectures at 9 and 10
And 8 I think
Uhhh possible
I get priority registration
in state gets priority
So I never got an 8am but last sem I had a 9 and 10 ams
