#UIUC!!! (2022-2023)
1 messages Β· Page 2 of 1
W
so it wont be too different from cal in that respect
well i mean even if theres more, its harder to get
compared to uiuc
well I suppose so
also uiuc has the research park
uiuc prob has connections to Chicago companies right?
yea
wait is the research park lwk reserved for uiuc students
so a lot of people love to come here for quant
yea
only for us
OMG
most of the positions require you to be a UIUC student
and they have a bunch of career fairs
at the union
YES
my asian brothers β€οΈ
orz
ugh it's becoming too attractive
cal u gotta compete with the entire bay area π
π
that is true
chicago companies are nice
im a freshmen
got into the final rounds
but they put me on waitlist
cause my ass was lazy and did the interview at the last possible moment
uiuc has interviews??
wait were u the guy who made the reddit post about seeing ur admisions file
(wrong reply lmao)
well like there are companies that visit
he talking about jobs
yea
OMG
oh
OHHH
so a lot of companies visit
and then I applied to some
I got back from one of them
bit I did it too late
π
so im on waitlist now π
I just did another interview today
praying that works out π€
so p much UIUC has you settled in Chicago
p much yes
well the interview I did today was a milwaukee company
and some madison companies seem to give us interviews
so like
anywhere in the mid west is fair game
but like cali companies fine too
is chicago diff from the stereotypes u see on the internet?
there's just so many to miss out
but its a nice city to visit
you'll def get one
yea π
just stay out of the inner city areas and its fine
low cost of living too
and good infra
Illinois is a good state to live in, tbh
and I have my own bathroom
and share a kitchen with one other person
and included utilities
fr
W
snow is only con
also if u like chinese food
u'll love uiuc
we have like very very close to authentic chinese food
less than other places in midwest
plenty of indians in chicago
they have diwali celebrations in the union
during the holiday
a huge diwali party actually
bay area to illinois is not much diff demographics wise
yea lmaooo
asian food is covered pretty much
there are more asian restaurants than american ones
on green street
cs+x sounds cooler
math + cs is lower acceptance rate than cs + x right?
What site
no reported acceptances since 2019
my HS
Oh
naviance be like
Wish my school had naviance
the scattergrams on naviance broke
like when i click on them, nothing happens at all
reload and hope
that happens to be a lot and sometimes you lowkey just gotta wave your mouse around and hope
its whack af
Do you know anyone in CS/GGIS? Sorry for the random question but Iβve quite literally never have seen or heard of anyone whoβs doing it besides a few random Reddit questions
this is insane omg? I get a closet with that here
Ye it's one of the lower ones
I know one, but barely know
It's a cool program you can't go wrong with any CS + x
Ye Champaign cheap af
Yβall have a Meijers?
Damn forgot those existed
Used to live in Springfield, IL now I'm in the southwest
I used to live in Chicago. Moved to East Coast nowπ
hiii! ok so for the "if u chose a 2nd choice major.. why", am i supposed to cite specific UIUC programs that will help me with it or just like, explain myself in why i chose it hahaha
its just a why major essay
so talk about ur background, ECs, hobbies, etc
ok ty :) thank god lowk i was doing that anyways π woulda been worried if i had to cherrypick some specific programs for it
150 word count limit be a little rough when i have to do that
did u guys answer the academic challenges essays
i didnt
answer it if its relevant for you
if I apply for math but half my ECs are for comp sci will they think I'm only applying for math cause its safer than CS?
They have an essay for you to talk abt your interests
Idts UIUC cares that much
Make it good
No
But if u wanna switch to cs + math I'd say go to another school lol
yeah not expecting that
My ecs are Premed π
And I applied psych and Biochem
I hope they take me
Illinois is good school
Real competition for Intl Asian CS
fr
Lol
Business all the way for me
Just sent my app
And knew that apparently according to us news uiuc is #5 for cs πππ
Crazy
I have to complete my last essay
Its fine
U prob gonna get on ur 1st major
bruh you dont even know my stats
If ur stats is worse then a 32/42 in in then idk man π
whast 32/42
We do total scores lol
So each subject is outa 7
7 being slightly higher than a 5AP
And we take 6 subjects for 2 years
The subjects are longer with units covering many topics
We got a test at the end of 2 years
Like econ
We do 4 units
Intro to econ
Macro
Micro
International trade
Literally goes from 3 sub units to 10 or 11 for micro π
Same level as ap or could be higher idk π€·ββοΈ
ehh if im applying to cs+stats and im doing the "explain an experience youve had that is related to your major" essay, is it okay if i talk abt AI? like i think the stats part of the major is tripping me up bc idk if i should mention it SPECIFICALLY or not

what is the admission chances diff between CS and Stats&CS
Yea I talked about AI
But you should mention pure stats I was criticized for not doing so
Like the difference between 4 ~ 8% vs 10 ~ 15%
CS + stats is one of the hardest CS + x to get into but easier than Grainger CS
hi, for uiuc do I have to submit my own final report? or that should submit it my counselor?
As in final grades?
yes, I'm an international student and I graduated on December so I already have my final grades
Counselor or if your school has like online services that sends for you like Parchment or Naviance
i thought it wasn't a CS + X program?
and if my counselor already sent my final grades to the first colleges I have applied but yesterday I applied to a new one, do I have to ask him to send it again to this new college? or is not necessary
sorry for all the questions
Yea it's not
But idk it's convenient to say CS + x lol
ooo icic thank u!!. im just a little unsure on how exactly to approach pure stats within the topic hahaha. like i have a completely different topic that is related to stats but also its like not written as well (more technical/mechanical/zzz) but if it would be better i can switch my topic
great, thanks!
I feel like you could also talk about data analysis
thats also quite stat based
it doesn't necessarily have to be technical either
Is UIUC information + data sciences hard to get in
not really
its new
the IS acc rate is like 70% so I dont think it would be much lower than that
so ur telling me i have a a good shot getting in as IS is my 2nd major
yes
but if you wanna do CS
do not come here for IS
because its almost a completely different thing
nvm just checked. i have statistics as 2nd major
prob had IT for another school when i told u the other day
is Stats worth going if im doing cs
but it needs development
stats + cs minor i heard is a nice combo
stats here is very programming based if you want it to be
its hard
but not impossible ofc
4% oos vs 2% oos
π
uw is mad
hard
yea
only bc its in seattle
yep and because they love instate way more than UIUC
oh yea only thing that sucks abt cs minor
is its hard to sign up for cs electives
but if you have a 3.2 gpa and above
you get auto admisson into uiuc cs masters degree
then we just take core classes?
yep
the CS sequence
you need to take like 4 core courses
and 2 electives
the 4 core courses are almost guaranteed
does uiuc like cs extracurriculars in ur doing cs?
yea
ECs are important
yea
and its still a top 30 cs school
Rutgers is nice too for a safety
so happens to be the one school i accidentally put no sat π
umass amherst should also be target level for oos CS
mines r solid but only 2 for cs
didn't double check
100% my fault
that should be fine
oh yea UW madison doenst admit by major
so its gonna be easier to get in for CS compared to direct admit schools for it
also yea UW-Madison places higher than UMass amherst for CS
and overall for that matter
this yes but heard it isn't a safe campus
UIUC is not safe either imo LOL
we are like top in crime for some reason
124 shootings last year
chicago carrying πͺ
π
in uiuc or chicago
thoughts on math + cs minor?
UIUC
same as the stats thing I mentioned
uh uh uh
its pretty based
woo
champaign used to be very safe but recently we kinda urbanized and somehow crime rose
scaring me man
bc ive already gotten into a pretty solid state school w a bit of a scholarship
π
just be careful
another reason i like uiuc is bc they have a strong chinese community
campus can get dangerous at night but chances are you are safe
are you chinese
yes
yea same
chinese american tho
thats the biggest reason I went
yea im chinese intl but also chiense american
there is a ton of asian american clubs here
so you'll def enjoy that if you come
born nyc so crime is nothing new π
this is very specific but
and there is so much close to authentic food here
does the glowsticking club still exist
oooo i dont remember
any spicy szechuan food?
not as spicy as I want it π
but spicier than other american place Ive been
its not close in pain to actual sichuan food tho
kekw
well that's good yeah i like spicy stuff
yea I havent seen anything by them recently
we have a balloon animal club
I wanna join but no time
we mostly are sichuan food
how does that work? lol
umass u have some competition
its almost as good as the ones I get at home
I have no idea, i think they teach you have to make balloon animals
what about fu ji fei pian
UIUC has the largest chinese international population in the whole american univeristy system
i dont remember if i had any
but im p sure they have it here
the food is actually quite close to authentic
but it depends on where you go
going to make my broken mandarin feel sad lol
lol
tbh the asian americans and chinese intls dont interact at all
its kinda weird
but honestly a good way to practice
I wouldn't be scared of speaking chinese
would u say it's bc of the english barrier?
i feel like theres culture barrier too in a way
Yea a lot of intl students suck at English
i have a friend over at northwestern
Yea that too
Asian Americans have an almost completely different culture than Chinese intls
And I think some don't wanna interact cause it seems "FOB"y
Lol that's the feeling I get sometimes
for sure.
I have friends on both sides but I can rarely hang out with both groups together
Because too much difference
only worries is intls are going to speak stuff i understand but at the same time not rlly
Don't be worried about that
I always tell Asian americans
To just speak confidently
They know ur chinese isn't good
But no need to worry
π just the fact that you know mando even remotely is good enough
Knowing Chinese is such a huge plus here tbh
im chinese american idk how to read/write and i speak canto not mando
Canto is cool
can't read/write either. just know. a little
Its fine honestly
speak mando and fuzhounese if there's any at uiuc
If you wanna practice there so many ways to do it here
There are tons of fuzhounese
Sadly I don't speak their dialect
But they speak Mandarin too
W
But yea just talk to intl people
Most of them will be reclusive
But some of them will def try to be friends with u
I say this as an intl looking for more Chinese American friends
going to have to change that with my warming rizz
π
π
jk
W rizz?
yes. forgot to tell u im also double major. one in rizziology π
CS + rizz
will change the landscape of major selecting in the future
Fr
B.S. in rizzology
just rizz the company
politics
oh wowww lol
i was wondering cuz my friend who applied for that asked if it was possible to switch into a cs + x thing after lol
so im guessing not at all?
(or maybe?)
it is
its just hard
not sure tho cuz any cs + x is prob hard lol
yea
yeah unfortunate
IS + DS is also hard to switch into
has the same gpa req as cs +stats
which is 3.67
Oh
Wait you mean from IS + DS to CS + X?
which is also 3.67
or IS to IS + DS
Ohhh
Yeah what about other CS + x's
and also you have to finish the calculus sequence
ahh lol
wait do you have to retake calc btw??
if you already took it in high school
if you take calc bc and get a 4 or 5
you get to skip calc 1 and 2
if you can skip calc at uiuc
yeah i have that
oh yayyy lol
yeah π¦
other cs + x dont need it
thats multivar right?
maybe cs + astro need it
yea
ah damnnn
yeah bc i'm considering data science so lowkey might be the move
me too
samee
data science is such a good job
i hope stats isnt too hard tho
nah stats is not bad here
the thing that sucks here about stats
is the calculus seq
did you apply cs+stats
its the easiest way to get into data science imo
i got a 5 on the ap calc bc exam so i can use the credit
unfortunately no, pure CS
thats is very very very nice to have
I did not have that π
ahh I see gluck
stats major + cs minor
also based
- cse minor if you got enough credits perhaps
do u know the in state cs rate bjz
does uiuc care abt essays?
yes
but overall from what I've seen
the stats they take ar ep high so essays that are good are good neough
dont need to be godly
I see
π¨ wait should i go test optional for cs+stats if my highest single-session was a 1420?? π. my math was a 750
but the commonapp doesnt ask fore the subscoress π just the "highest total score from 1 sitting"
oh someone posted 4 months ago of the major for cs+stats and it said the average was 1478 (supposedly)
they do
yea
oki
bruh the reading was just rough af that time π huge ass graph at the very end of the section i was like. ohh wow.
where? is it on the portal? or am i dumb hahahah
If you go test optional theyll think your score is <1200 is what Iβve found a lot of places
plus you'd still be considered for stats if cs doesnt take you
do you mean the math/writing split
yes
oh im sorry hahaha its the umm the dual . one . the in the science college the stats/cs major . so its like. my 2nd option is smth in the like psychology school
also j send Uiuc the score report
this is what i put into the (specifically) uiuc commonapp thing but if it shows the score report from commonapp then the split should be there
oh right
yea you can just send them the score report
ohhhhh ok lol
nvm then
Yea go test optional
The avg sat for CS + stats is 1478 last year
<3
I expect it to be higher this year
do yk avg for cs
6.7%
Oh lol yea that was me π
Are u oos? And how is ur school with SAT?
They compare you to your schools avg too
Is cs + math as selective or more or less than straight cs?
Less but more than any CS + x
Except stats maybe
Stats + CS and math + CS around the same rate
Okay cool
It's around 10~15 from rumors
Does oos knock that down any more? Lol
Could be worse ig lol
How was your first semester? Would recommend uiuc?
Very worth it for me
I would 100% recommend
Everyone's so passionate
Lot of cool programs and clubs
Tons of people to meet
Altho that's not specific to uiuc
Yeah haha thatβs awesome tho
Yea
Also i goofed
You'll most likely spend your first semester partying actually
I filled srar w mid year grades
Or at least having fun
But put my pre midyear gpa
W
First sem here is chill
Nah
Isnt this all four years
Coo
True
More time consuming
Imo can't beat 9ap/ccs coupled w all the other bs i did this year
wait whats the percentage for oos cs major?
And i still fit in parties
You'd be surprised
do y'all know anyone who actually got in pure CS lol?
I have a friend who got waitlisted last year but that was the closest they got
wait are you not supposed to apply pure cs?
It's really really selective
although there's like so many seats
4
Not talking about acceptance
Meant work life balance
oh jeez thatβs insane
also seems like this year there's a lot of alt major applicants (Ex: stats&cs)?
Wait nm
Tons
U were talking to someone edle
Yea there is
Last year half the apps were for blended CS majors
Wait no
Half the incoming CS class was blended CS majors
yeah lmao so in reality the chances are really hard otherwise as well
feeling worried and concerned rn ππ
If u want a high chance..no
Yea
fecking breh hahahahah would anyone be able to rq review my essay(s) in a little bit when i think im done writing the draft because i cant tell if it just sounds downright horrendous or just mid π
200 for pure
200 for blended
I expect more of the incoming class to be CS + x this year
Yh
for uiuc do yall think its fair to expect at least a waitlist if almost everyone who applies fom your school gets in
like 4 people who only took the sat got rejected and 2 people got denied over all the people who ever applied and very few people do
3 people applied this year and looking at the SAT reports on naviance im maybe ok but im just worried bc cs
like im just hoping for a waitlist and idk if school stats are a fair way to guess that?
not for cs no
yeah they would be considering 2nd major in that case
never know
like if i dont get in for cs i dont think the cost could be justified unless they were like "lmao just do cs+math" which they would absolutely not do LMAO
imo unless your going for something connected to your ideal career(and this career must be private sector STEM) OOS tuition is not worth it
STEM jobs are really the only thing with both high prospects and high pay that would make X level of debt worth it, also these rely on networking/recruitment a lot so say something like northeastern co-op or T10 CS in generals recruitment insanely valuable
so basically
if UIUC gives you the opt for a major like Data Sci or smt connected to CS somehow take it
if not its not worth it
If ur oos say goodbye to that idea
Uiuc is stingy as fuck for aid to oos
yeah thats the biggest reason for my oos schools bc where i am so many people opt for public sector or dod (including stem i swear every other person in robotics works at raytheon/lockheed/big defense company of all time)
oh yeah i forgot
meant to reply here lol
Governmetn Contract Private Sector jobs are also fiya
yea, they'll pay a lot and if you're leaning MIC your job will be stable
Uiuc connections are unbeatable
and they set you up with a lot of pathways into other non MIC companies
^^^
They actually send us a bunch of intern positions sometimes
like deadass i could do cc and lockheed would pay for it bc they love my area its weird but i want to go oos
Like today I got one
so if thats your goal and UIUC can offer something that'll take you there
the debt is worth it
Depends on how much debt
well OOS are all looking at 240k+ for basically any OOS Pub
excl out of pocket pay
i mean to my knowledge cost of living is like <1000/month for living alone so after freshmen itd be reduced somewhat and im planning on having a job throughout uni anyways
but itd still be bad
True I say 240k is a bit too much tho lol
presumably
I'm paying 650
BOR
Own closet
WTF
120k is a great. but 240k is too much
Yea
goddamn
Agreed
acc yea prob
im aiming CS+Biz/Finance so i've learned i have to stomach it
but not for pure cs prob
Ah what did u apply for
sheesh
300 possible too
best of luck to everyone applying UIUC, i think the deadline's tonight ?
CS+Econ but basically my major at every uni is some combo of CS + Biz/Finance or just a plan of dual majoring when ig et in
quality of living be damned if im alone and i can walk under 3 miles to a grocery store i can survive
thatts so cheap brooo
fr
Yea Champaign being in the middle of nowhere got it's benefits
100%
i'm looking at 12k room costs for most unis
which is cheap compared to LA rent
but UIUC slashes that mad
Wtf
LOL 12k is too much for me even tho I'm paying more than that this year
But only this year
π i would never pay 12k
First year dorms expensive
actually
and my problem is i see my home as a safe space
which means i really value shit like being alone/living w ppl ik well and having my own br
which means undoubtedly
I see
i'll add to that 12k
no doubt
are there good sandwich or food places at uiuc
i'll do double first year bc i wanna meet ppl
Should i talk about uiuc in my supplements
Hell yah
like if i want amazing jaw droppingly good food
fr bro
But the best cuisine here is Asian cuisine
Huh
I heard not too authentic but there is some stuff here
WAIT DIMSUM
icic
LMAO THE PINGGG
Yep
You get pinged when the word sandy is thrown out right?
Ikr
also best uiuc res hall/llc?
Not spicy for me but spicy for most Americans
food >>>>>
π
LETS GOOOO
i can't handle spice but i'll bring a bunch of milk
ahh
better j be the CAD texture
ISR food I heard gets stale
steak or stake
naw i'm leaving the bay area to get away from indian food
o
So go to PAR or LAR or ikenberry for food
Damn π
only reason i dont want to leave LA is the mad amount of gas spots
so much good food
i will
The drinking age here is almost effectively 19
how bout if we like
Instead of 21
LOL
oh shit
i got a fake anyways
Yea tons of students seem to have access here
fire
There's a place
That sells u alc
Without an ID
Lollll
The bar owners of Champaign have power over the govt
So they can make rules or bend them sometimes
lowk even if its j sem 1 thats perfect
its like the perfect reward/break for all the shit i did this year
Yea youll most likely be partying every weekend sem 1
I basically did something fun every week
Just drop into a frat or smth
yea
this is a big no for me. party and fun yes but greek life yeah im good
Ahhh
Well there is a disconnect between Greek life and school
So you can choose what you wanna do
Not everyone is in a frat
sandy dunes
Especially in CS kekw
It's important
π
Just show passion
That's the most important
And show u understand their programs well
yea
i feel like the weakpoint on my end is the experience related to my major essay & how I wanted to do CS+Econ in place of CS+BA, basically saying that I wanted to be more on the managerial end than engineering
what im counting on the most bc my 1410 is def not going be to their liking
which i mean they should get looking at my ECs and connecting that experience but idk
won't hurt as much as u think prob
TO inflated testing standards too much
Stats wise im completely set but where I lack and have always lacked is essays
are u submitting ur 1410? i have a 1420 and still idk if i should submit my score or not hahaha
ik thats what im thinkin
π€€ ummmm well if last yr the cs+stats SAT average was like auhhhh ~1480.... would 1420 squeak by the 25th percentile (coping)
You oos?
i did submit mines
its below 25th percentile
Oos you want ur SAT to be slightly higher
but its gives them a data point compared to those whose test optional
Ahh yea I would go optional
Is my sat good enough for cs? I submitted a 1250
I don't think ur SAt would benefit
π
yea thats what im think π
It's far below the average
Its on the 1300 scale though
they know its a 1410 but if u go test optional, uiuc would think its far below 1400's
Huh???
no
what
I mean they just wouldn't factor in SAT
hmm so niche places me here and naviance places me here
scares me a fuck ton how the guy with the best stats got denied
Never heard of the 1300 scale
i dont think that exists
they all say that. i don't trust them
bro prob had shit essays dw abt it
thye might be mixing that
i got shit essays too tho
I remember one guy who read his admissions file had perfect stats and got waited because his stats are good but he doesnt show good potential
or something
i can send to confirm since i alr submitted
plus my transcript has a 24 act that i didn't want to submit so a 1410 is neccessary for me
And they still didn't like my score
wailisted
damn
what was urs?
had like a 4.0 36
1500
I posted something Abt this before
why do all the good schools have such high standards
54 votes and 26 comments so far on Reddit
i mean i obv know why
does that make my 1410 better?
but they shouldnt
heres my navianve
i mean i didn't put for them to consider my act but they can't unlook my act when they see my transcript lol
oh wait we're like an arts school so SAT score is prob skewed
damn lowk we are oddly similar
outside of intl
my post-midyear gpa is 3.86 as well
CS+X
hoping so
would love to go to uiuc
only issue i have ig
is a downward grade trend
though insanely insanely slightly
if u have harder classes then no big deal
way harder
plus like u said insanely slightly
2AP, 2Honor, 2 CC, 2P to 6 AP 3 CC
yeah
i assume from a to a- lol
basically went all A 1st sem last year
to 1 B last sem
to 2 B this sem
by this sem i mean fall
u will be just fine
but my courseload this sem was wildly diff like i said
yea hope so
lmao
AB and Physic 1 works?
Ye
only issue is its AP Phys 1 to AP Phys C MC bc EM is basically gone at my school
no one takes it
say less
I did physics 1 and 2
im taking ap comp sci A rn. school don;t offer principles
ah damn
i enrolled in both this yr since i had an extra slot
taking stats also since major related too
im dual enrolling stats this semesterπ
LMAOOO
.
how are my activities btw
i feel like they lean too hard towards management & IT
10x times better than mines π
tru yea
but a few stretch back into MS which i noted
and i can only go to grade 11
yea covid year
wait shit
π€¦ββοΈ
i didnt fucking incl year 10 for my staff spot
By the looks of it, both of our best extracurricular is work experience lol
yea lol
U donβt have to put all 10 right
nah
i j maxed at the end bc i was a fucking sysadmin junkie in MS up till last yr
obsessed w configing and running stuff
Going to slack off a bit from doing hw and focus on coding projects
That's good LOL
I also had internships π
Prob the same cuz its both cs based
Ah interesting
Whats the acp rate for the business major? At geiss
Yall got some goated ecs goddamn
27% iirc
valid
nah i j got insanely lucky
i didnt start focusing on college EC wise till this year
Okok
Idk
I think i screwed myself lowkey bc i basically just do robotics and was like "xyz small thing doesnt count" so im just like ???
I dunno
Ayo big w
also yes even if ur ecs seem small they are bigger than u think
especially if ur a robotics kid like
theres a lot to expand upon there
Thanks π
Thats my issue like
Not that i hate him
But the programmer on my team is so goddamn protective of the code that this is the first year he has like
Easily shared it
On github which i dont use bc i am cringe and not really a programmer tbh so i have to figure out how to get ut to work LMAO
does uiuc take letters of rec
no
gl with figuring it out LOL
But like lowkey my role is basically
- time management
- actually reading the manual
- notebook
- scouting
- drive coach
And helping w/ building or debugging if he lets us and lord have mercy i would rather rewrite all my programs in python and i do not like python
But granted im used to java so
java >>>>
thank god i thought i almost just died π
LOL
i think ur the first person ik who doesnt like python but yeah u can kinda split up at least ur seperate roles on the team if ur lacking ecs
π
π
add me
LMAO
according to some reddit posters that aint true π
THOSE POSTS ABT THE NEGATIVE TEAHER REC LETTERS ARE JUST LIKE. WICKED ANMD CRAZED
LOL
i lowk might be part of this
i needed to submit a math rec letter
and it was either this teacher who i had no idea what she'd write
or a covid year teacher who didn't know i existed
I just have a long desc for robotics
But for python its just so damn annoying like its less readable and even w/ w3 schools the second i do something intuitive i get errors WHICH ARE 1 AT A TIME?? Like its highkey my inexperience but it doesnt help that every idea i have thatd be simple in python turns out annoying af to execute lmao
honestly i get it
im a c++ typa gal myself
granted i havent coded in like
forever
but c++ will always be my fav i think
yea I hate how python sometimes oversimplify some syntaxes to the point that it's unreadable
im oos so is that like a solid "go test optional"
