#CMU ED 1 + 2 (2022-2023)
738 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
So nervous......
Shit everyone applying CS
Good luck!!
I do USACO
They dont waitlist early
well then rejection
Wish for the best lol
what are you applying?
Omg nice
gl boys
I'm soo nervous I don't think I'll be sleeping today. Good luck to everyone who applied ED.
I have an SAT of 1580, ranked 5th in my class, and have 4 or 5s on all APs I've taken (15 so far). What abt u.
Though I think CMU needs more than stats and it depends more on essays and ECs. Stats just get you in the door
does Cmu ed even matter?
What do you mean
does it boost chances?
I believe it does because if you look at the common dataset, only around 2800 people apple to ED, so the applicant pool is smaller giviing you a higher chance. Also, a lot of the people who are extremely good at CS might choose to apply restrictive early action to Stanford, which means that an Early decision applicant to CMU won't be compepting with that person. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong though.
Cmu is “better” for cs
I think that Stanford and MIT are slightly better for CS than CMU
Like I think they have more of a name recognition
That website only factors in publications, and not anything else. US News has more factors in its ranking like outcomes and faculty ratio and others.
I have 1570 and 14 APs total including the ones im taking this year
and i have like average comp math scores
same!
Your applying CMU ?
Alr hope to see you in couple of classes then
lmao let me get in first
Anyway no point speculating I didn’t make it
mhm
nope
Ok so I'm pretty sure you made it past the first round of admissions based on your stats alone. The rest will be decided based on youe ECs, Essays, and Honors. Good luck. Hope you get in.
Thanks! You too
Hopefully we see each other in CS classes lol
yeah, im a math major but if i get in im really looking forward to the cs classes too
Yeah
Theres a reason CMU is known as the birthplace of AI
Getting into CMU is like getting a golden ticket. Once you graduate you can get an interview at an company you want
Yeah
fr?
Yeah why.
ngl those are probably target stats if you want to get into a school like cmu
Well
As for stats ur probably maxed out
So having better than u won’t necessarily help
Well no I’m talking about people who win national olympiads and stuff like that
That’s what I mean when I say much better
Oh
Yeah
I just hope a lot of USAMO people didn’t ED as welll, out of the 6-7 I know none of them did
Thank god for that
I literally haven't been able to focus on anything because a literal life-changing decision is coming out in around 16 hours
Any advice to deal with the stress
I only got a 1480 you are def not alone
SATs aren’t everything. Even if you have a lower sat you can make up for it with good essays and ECs and honors
Oh damn you guys are set lol I’m over here with a 33 act and only 11 ap’s 🥲
Really hope EC’s and essays carry
Did you guys communicate with admissions at all? Like through emailing a specific person since they don’t have regional admissions officers?
Calm down lmao
11 APS more than enough
Nope
No if I had any questions I would just call up the admissions office directly
Yeah most people have around 8 so your defiantly above the average
what's your best CS EC
ig just science fair and a ton of small hackathons
also im part of ib
so ive made programs for people
as part of the course grade
Who are doing Information Systems ED here?
guys
cuz there are about 14 people
here
considering the odds
only like 1 person here is going to make it in
about
im having heart palpitations
Are u cs?
Shit gl man HAHA
cs
I’m Info Sys so
is anyone engineering
thanks 😅😭
Good luck dude engineerings competitive af too
you too LOL
But CS tho u guys are insane
gl to yall
So worried my SAT isnt enough for IS
sat isnt everything
It’s not man HAHA lets see just scared bc i got waitlisted last year
can you be waitlisted in ED?
Nah
deferred i think
Went ED2 last year, got deferred, then waitlisted, took priority waitlist, then got rejected wooo
oh damn 😭
ouch
Really no expectations this time around other than probably facing a more competitive pool
i def do nothavve enough aps
Quantity matters less than the actual APs themselves
jesus christ yeah lmao
but
also
diff majors/schools
god
But hear what they said they really consider the subjects you took and the corresponding grade more than the actual cumulative number
Just make sure u got 5s in the math physics engineering shits then 4s in the rest should be ayt
i didn't report too many scores
SAT they also said they consider context so like even if you got a lower score than cmu average but your high school sucks at testing, ure still fine
lowkey the only things carrying my application r cmu research + rec letter from a prof there and my sat
other scores + ecs r not stellar
Unless you threw your essays and other stuff
Let’s see tho man no point analyzing rn since we’ll know in 9.5 hrs u should get sleep HAHA
Gl
Thanks dawg
this server feels like the part before all the contestants enter the hunger games
may the odds be ever in our favor i suppose
is anyone applying business
even if it's a rejection, there are a lot more colleges to look forward to
Facts man
i am
nahh wharton mba tho
Still i’d imagine more upenn ed than tepper
yea for sure I mean if it makes it easier for me to get in I'll take it 😭
@onyx trout ALYS
JAEEEEE
GOOD LUCK TMRW
its bugged I have no role LOL
lmaoo
@onyx trout ALIS
Damn none of us can sleep
no frrr
THANK YOU
U guys classmates?
nah online friends xD
Did anyone ED Dietrich?
shes my sister
real
alr see u in pittsburg
pog
anyone know how to manifest 💀
hi guys I know u guys r nervous about tmr I’m a sophomore in cit so feel free to ask me anything!
pull an all nighter
playing ur favorite game of choice
im considering all nighter
imma watch seinfeld
bro when they say stargting 9am do they mean at 9am or after 9am
nvm they prob mean after 💀
when I got my decision(rd) they actually released it early so
does the letter come with balloons and confetti if you get in
or do I actually have to read and process what it says 😭
lmao it’s cmu we don’t do celebrations
im making my cousin open it 💀
do you like it at cmu?
trying to find any reason to not fall apart after getting rejected
are you applying cs 😭
And grading is really harsh
no business 😭
thank you! wbu?
cs 💀
do you regret your decisioin
omgg best of luck! im sure you'll do great
50% female student body slays
lmao nah I’m ece this is literally the best place for it
was it hard to adjust to college atmosphere or was everyone rlly welcoming (teachers + students)
I’d personally say cmu’s social dynamic is a lot more diverse than you’d imagine
It’s not too hard ppl here are generally really nice
Profs are pretty welcoming imo especially if you’re taking freshman classes
One of the classes I’m taking this sem the prof told the freshman they should reconsider whether they wanna take this course during their first semester so it really depends💀
Less than 4 hours guys holy crap
F
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE
less than an hour to go
is scs really 50/50?
Will they announce how many get in
Idts
Checking my portal every minute
8 mins
if its rejection
its rejection
it is what it is
we can do without cmu
best of luck everyone
gl everyone
5 mins
Gl everyone!
Will the send an email ?
2 minutes left
I don’t think it’s that low
That’s for regular decision
they dont have a preference
Early decision has much fewer people applying
cmu
Its time
Last year only around 2900 people applied early decision compared to the over 10000 who applied regular I think
rejected 😦
Will they send email ?
They dont deserve you bro. Keep your head up
rip oh well
got in!
For cs
lets gooo
Same
Thats a W
@acoustic minnow u sure?
REJECTED WOO
Yeah that’s what it says.
But I don’t think I’ll get in regular decision.
should i do ED2?
If you want to take another shot I guess
do they evaluate based on major?
What major did you get into
statistics
thats still a W
I got in
rejected laugh out loud
congrats omg !!!!!
Congrats everyone!!!
congrats everyone!!
same
I'm sorry to everyone who was rejected
for CS?
For DS
ahh
Not as competitive as what you guys are going through but yeah
yo that’s still amazing
happy for you
can I DM for stats?
Congrats everyone who got in
Do they post the stats anywhere
Like how many got into Cs or smth
sure
Did you get in for cs
Rejected
Rejected
4.130 WGPA, 3.925 UGPA, Rank 23/481, 10 AP classes. Did not submit ACT or SAT scores. Applied to Heinz/Dietrich Joint Program.
I've seen a lot of other kids get rejected so thankfully I don't feel alone <3
And there's other colleges to apply to this month anyhow!
So I'm happy that I at least now have a choice of college and my most expensive one rejected me 😂 still kinda bummed but it's all good.
test optional screwed you
They said it didn't matter ? If it did though... that sucks. I got a 32 on the ACT after taking it a couple times last year which is not that good for cmu anyways
it does matter for a school like CMU
They said there were test optional 💀 if that was why I was rejected ---
they highly value tests
Ouch
I didn't submit... I really focused on making sure my writing portion was excellent. Guess they didn't care to read 😭
A 32 isn't good...
Do you go to CMU, or did you get into cmu?
no
gotcha
got rejected as well
dang... lots of people got rejections...
nah I was test optional
Don’t feel bad interdisciplinary are hard to get in, u need both college to accept u
Ohhh I see... LOL so one might have accepted but not the other :\
Yeah that’s why a lot of ppl don’t apply for interdisciplinary and transfer into it when they get into cmu lol
Looking at ur stats I would guess Heinz rejected u just cos IS is very small
yeahhh
Honestly it has more to do with class size than u ig so don’t beat urself up
my stats are close and I also didn't submit sat/act
yeahhh that's two colleges to accept me so that's fine
is there anyway to see how many they took into CS early round ?
good to know for other colleges.
R u applying regular?
yeah
didn't know stats were so important to cmu
Most cmu students outside of scs are actually just cs wannabe
(not me -- I strongly dislike a lot of CS right now lol)
They know they wouldn’t get into scs so they apply to somewhere else and double major
i dont want to major in comp sci tbh thats the thing
i want the comp bio focus
under the scs
like i love comp sci dont get me wrong
Comp bio really is just cs and bio
yeah
Practically double major
And comp bio double major is offered to cit students afaik
Idk if other college can do it too but ik for a fact cit students can double major comp bio
cit ?
College of engineering
idk i was trying to look for bme or neural engineering or comp neuro which is what i mostly apply to elsewhere but the closest thing i saw was the comp bio under scs
I mean we hv bme lol
The way bme works at cmu is that it’s only double major
So u hv to major in a traditional engineering(mech chem ece wtever) and then u can double major in bme
ah i see
Bme here is designed to go with mech tho
That’s usually the most popular one
But realistically u can choose any besides civil ig I don’t think that would work lol
yeah thanks you were really helpful to helping me figure out the likely reason i was denied 💀
the people that read my essays said they were really good, they were former readers and they currently interview kids for mit
so probably it was just the stats lol
IM IN
IM in
Congrats to everyone who got in and I’m sure the rest of you will find another amazing place
gjgj
@rose acorn what major?
@rose acorn could u go over ur stats
fr
no
I took Chem e freshman year it’s pretty chill
The one bad thing about this system is that if u wanna double major bme it also means u hv to really be sure what your other eng major is
Unless you wanna take another intro to eng sophomore year
Kinda shit ngl
i see
DM or ping me later haha, glad to do so
Applied math and computing
Closest thing to CS without being CS
And I applied math most places
whats computing? congrats btw
No idea but I think cs-related math
ah nice
congrats on cmu bro
just wondering, what appealed to u to apply CMU ED
because i feel like rather than me EA'ing to like 5 unis next year i rahter should ED to one
like northwestern cornell or cmu
yeah but the ED ones i have arent as appealing to me as some others that dont have ED so idk
Their math is very good
Second only to arguably MIT PRINCETON and like 1 other
well ofc the schools that have REA/EA are better than the schools that have ED
Uh
yeah
Idk what u mean lol
northwestern is like 5th on the list so
more name
the ones above it are mit, princeton, stanford, ga tech
I’d rather not u tell me other schools are better than mine on the day I get accepted
Thanks
better is the wrong word
and i prob will EA mit ga tech if not ED
thats not my point
its this
nah bro CMU is insane especially for anything math and cs related 🙏
ofc
Yes I appreciate it but like not everyone will like the same things
If you were wondering
Princeton
And MIT were also some of my choices
But I didn’t decide princeton until later
ive got time tho
i dont wanna go to college for education tbh
And MIT not worth relying on to get in
prof teaches like shit tho😔
po-shen loh?
I’m sure there will be difficulties
Rather not face the negatives now tho
Hope that’s understandable
Ayyy congrats see you there!
U in too?
u got into stat right?
Yup but I really want to do something bio related as well
Sent you a friend request, I’m trying to find as many people going there as I can!
I think Dietrich has a stat/neuroscience major
see in stats class
what school ?
The one that this thread is named for
like what department within CMU
nice, I thought about applying to that
Is that Mellon?
Oh yeah whoops lol
Do you guys know how hard it is to switch schools at cmu?
very very
Yeah it’s hard
I think Mellon has the same major as the one in Dietrich but a lot more opportunities
@light trout has told me it’s hard
well, it depends on what school you want to transfer to
Yeah I get it would be hard to switch to cs
other ones are doable
But Dietrich to Mellon for a somewhat related major seems doable
I have a friend who switched from Diet to MCS
just maintain good grades and complete requirements and depending on availability, it's doable
so much stress has been releived
lmao
What major
Yeah it’s possible transfer but it also depends on who you are and what ur transferring into
It’s also pretty posisble to double major same thing apoloed
Applied
Applies
I’m cs so like I can have a shit gpa but if you double in cs u need to have some gpa to maintain the secondary major
Are you Dietrich
yeah
Oh fire
How does doubling work? Same school? What about minoring
Okay here is how it will work for u
Basically
You have requirements you need to fulfil because you’re undeclared
So I’m pretty sure you need to take some sort of science
And math
Then at the end of the year you can declare your specific major
You can minor pretty easily
It’s also very feasible to double major
is material science/engineering and math double major possible at CMU
ik some u have to be in the same school
like cornell
I think math and cs have some overlap so a few people in math double in cs
You have to be in cit
whats cit?
But why math and math sci
sorry not familiar with this stuff yet
Yes
i wanna pursue career in material engineering but also do a lot of research in pure math like number theory-based concepts
So wt u wanna do is apply mat sci and then u can double major math
I see I see
And is that easily doable?
Nah wt I mean is u can’t do it the other way around
Yea
And can you handle it
APCSA and APBC
Ok so doubling in cs even tho I’m not in SCS isn’t a problem?
That’s nice damn
It isn’t a problem it’s just hard
Yeah
That’s like half the school lol
@twilit shell is a double in cs
What about minor in cs
Lmao
Not true ?
You have to sustain a good gpa to maintain a double
yeah ik
The only doubles I know are math and tepper
but what im saying is like in unis like cornel where u cant do outside the same college, then ill do just mat sci rather than just math
so ill apply through mat sci first
wish i was good at cs bro, woulda expanded my range a lot
Anyone can be good at cs
The thing is if you don’t actually like it, you’ll want to die at CMU if you chose to do cs
It’s extremely rigorous
I’m also biased I’m not nearly as good as my classmates at anything lmao
yeah
But also you should think about why you want a double
I don’t believe it’s a good idea in most cases tbh
It limits how much you get to explore
And you can be x major and still take classes that interest you
Literally if you want to be a SWE you basically need to take 3 courses in the cs curriculum at CMU
112 (if you don’t have Ap credit), 122 (c programming and data structures) and 213
Which is intro to systems
I’m pretty sure that’s all employers give a shit about too
does 4 on csa give credit?
No
112 is extremely difficult and rigourus it’s not a typical intro course
You learn backtracking, trees, recursion, OOP and other shit and it’s hella time consuming
Expect 20 hours per week or more (if you have limited programming experience)
Eh 213 isn't that needed (maybe not even 122 if you are frontend). 122 is good for intern interview Qs though
could write a whole guide on this
prob will someday — anyways, yeah it’s very possible
mostly dependent on your willingness to sacrifice evenings, weekends, friends, clubs in the service of work
‘my heart is in the work’
mmh I suppose the entire uni is that to a degree
but it is compounded for those trying for additional majors
I like 210 for the dp, ll and graph practice
213 is good if you are working with networks, assembly, processors
none of these require a cs major or minor to take btw! If you’re solely looking for the learning, you can just take them as long as you have the pre-recs
Ayo
lol this came from a cmu cs professor
Yo do you guys know if cmu released Ed stats
yep, everything is useful in certain cases. There are many instances though where a willingness to learn and like 112/122 is enough knowledge to get you through a job
which one lmao
lol I'll dm
I dont think test optional does screw anyone. From what i've heard from CMU AOs it isnt gonna make or break your app. Tho for programs like SCS or ECE that are very selective and in STEM having weak math stats (which is implied by being test optional) can def be a negative. Not as much of a negative as showing a low sat score though so it's still a wise decision to apply test optional if your sat just isn't where you'd want it to be.
also, I got in for ECE! :) very happy. Ill probably be seeing some of u guys around campus
congrats!
post in #✨-celebration-station for more exposure and bigger flex
I’m ece so lemme know if there’s anything u wanna know!
fosho, will let you know
Congrats!!!
Congrats!!!! and yea the 80k is rough
dyk if cmu gives a lot of aid?
heyo this isnt necessarily ed related but anyone double major applied math/stat and engineering? just still trying to decide on a major before rd deadline
leaning more toward applied math major but also just want to get a general sense of how it is to double major with eng
Engineering double majors are only available for engineering students
i see
thanks!
i misread minor as double major somehow, thats why 💀
anyone with experience applied math + minor in eng?
Did they not already tell you?
no i didnt realize i hadnt uploaded one of the files until now 😭
has anyone received the email to create an Andrew ID and password? or do we need to wait a couple days?
i havent yet
i got the receipt for the deposit and thats it
hi
not scs persoanlly but there are a lot in the ‘27 cmu server!
yeah is there a server for '27?
yes
@solid ether @sterile garden stats?
Yes
Anybody who got in and is from Bay Area pls lmk!
Invite please 🥺🥺🥺??
Never been asked for stats before o_0 um 3.99 unweighted gpa/4.36 weighted, 36 act, prob top 5% class rank out of 350 ish, abt twelve aps?
crazy
hm interesting
🫠🫠🫠
1590, 98 avg (no unweighted gpa), rank 4/580ish, 14 aps before senior year (12 5s)
competitive-ish houston public
Bruh
@sterile garden what awards/ecs
Wtf
We can only take 15 courses before senior LMAO
Rarely 18
We’re only allowed 6 major courses per year
i have 14 TOTAL bruh
You can start moving over to #1051701547907682344 if you were deferred or are applying RD!
this thread is still being used for ed ii right
Yes
CMU ED 1 + 2
it's cmu ed2 time
we shall both get in 😄
Good luck guys🙏🙏🙏
🙏
if I got a decent sat score in 7th grade, should I send that as well
since they say
Should students present tests taken two or more years in advance of their first-year experience, we'd take the timing of the test results into consideration.
I think I heard that cmu prefers if you submit all your scores, but that might have been before the whole test optional thing
Unless you’re circumstance doesn’t allow u to submit your test score you should submit it
yeah I'll definitely submit the sat score I got last year
I'm just wondering if I should remove my 7th grade score in the official score report
They’ve made it pretty clear
oh wait 🤡
ok
somehow I managed to only read the second half of that paragraph when I scrolled through there lol
thanks
huh when I deselect it, this pops up
I guess I'll just send them an email to ask then :blobpat
hm they say here that https://www.cmu.edu/admission/sites/default/files/pzh-nqzvffvba/2021-09/cmu-application-instructions.pdf
- If you choose to have your scores
considered, you’re required to submit all
official results of either the SAT or the
ACT.
seems like it based on this
but it's weird that they don't also say that here
they mean they take it into consideration meaning the longer ago it was, the less they care.
should I report a 1510 to CMU?
feb 1
on? or before?
iirc website said by feb 1
gonna hold out hope that it comes out on the 27th with all my other stuff heh
can you withdraw ed2 apps right before deadline?
like if i got into my EA school on january 27, i quickly withdraw before cmu results come out
is this umich 💀
anyway, they might remove that withdraw button a few days before decisions come out
usc lmao
oh rip
LOL
its okay tho manifesting cmu
issok they were intimidated by us
so true
amen
we deserve better anyway
frfr
when do results usually come out for ed2?
Says February 1st on the website
^
by feb 1st actually
and according to some reddit post
/ comment
it came out on a saturday last year
at 9am?
not sure how much i can trust that tho since cmu admissions social media has no information on ed2 💀
and thats the only info i have
but it could definitely come out late jan
just like dont stress over it it'll come out when it comes out
lol cmu released ed this year on a saturday at 9am est so that might just be the way they do it
no shot
they're ruining my plans
i was gonna open with friends and then get dinner afterwards
💀
wait hehe
see if you can withstand the temptation haha
