I got in for cs oos, and I'm class of 2026. My only cs related extracurricular was taking a cs class over the summer for a program. My school didn't have any cs courses, so I had little coding experience when applying. My other "main" extracurriculars were orchestra (i was last chair viola), captain of quizbowl (our team never qualified for regionals), and speech and debate (finished last place in nearly every competition). You definitely don't need crazy award winning extracurriculars to get in.

unlike pj42, most of my EC's were cs/math related and kinda the stereotypical app (club pres, internship, research, etc with some less important artsy and envi ECs towards the end), i got deferred in EA then accepted RD,,... i think the essay is very impt to gtech (like most schools) but also because its why major + why school and its the only essay gtech has, personally i think it was one of my worst essays since it was like the first one i did

so i feel like it can be kind of random yeah

grade deflation used to be a thing many many years back but I wouldn’t say that’s the case anymore. If anything grades are inflated now especially post covid. Overall school gpa every semester now hovers around 3.6, within the college of engineering it’s around 3.5, and college of computing closer to 3.6 as well.

Keep in mind that the comment is literally from 3 years ago. GT has made huge strides in quant recruiting since then. Look at the companies mentioned in the comment and the number of GT/UIUC alum back then vs today: Two Sigma: 28 GT (+14) vs 19 UIUC (-4), Optiver: 14 GT (+10) vs 39 UIUC (+15), Hudson River: 14 GT (+7) vs 22 UIUC (+8). Overall: 56 GT (+31) vs 80 UIUC (+19).

Overall, UIUC still has more alumni but GT has had a greater increase in alumni since then.

Full transparency I was accepted and “committed” but last-minute decided to shift to the finance program at UF because I think it will provide me with the best opportunities. Are you in-state and a senior/junior? If you’re not and still deciding your course load, I highly recommend you take Math HL and and maybe a science HL. Personally, I did Math HL + LIT HL + BUSINESS HL. That’s because I’m not a stem-oriented person, if you are, tech loves the HL sciences/maths. Put a lot of work into the HL math, you need to do well to show GT you’re committed.

Oh we had a rlly similar list but u applied to more ivies than me, I did more schools that were good for cs specifically
