No, deferral is much worse, as MIT defers nearly 2/3rds of the early applicants. It really sucks as I was hoping to get in and only have to apply to 1 school; now I have to apply to ~10.

It kind of sucks because there might be applicants interested in other things than just olympiads because not every applicant fits in that box (I.e: there are some applicants who are really interested in web development let’s say, and that doesn’t necessarily imply that they are going to take part in these olympiads per se)

I think as long as you showcase an interest just for the sake of what you do and not because it fits into their criteria’s you still have a chance. And more importantly you should highlight that you’ve done a good deal of things in that specific branch that you’re interested in.

I know someone from my country who got in last year and they didn’t participate in an olympiad (though they were involved a lot in research, and they got into RSI) because they were truly interested in science and highlighted a good sense of leadership. Just don’t limit yourself to what people do
