For me, I prefer to ignore the main story, go off and roleplay a unique character that fits within the world.

I think here is the best place to ask this question. I’ve been playing Fallout 4 for a few years, but not until recently have I had time to dive in and actually make progress. How do we know when the game is “complete” or progress is no longer possible?

Or am I wrong and you can just keep playing side quests?

Another settlement always needs your help, General. But uhh... you'll know when the main story is over. It's pretty unambiguous, in my opinion.

At a certain point the game warns you that you're about to pick a side with one of the factions and there's no going back. After that it's very clear when the main story is over, but you can keep playing forever including doing any of the DLC that you haven't done yet.

There are repeatable quests that never end.
If you do everything possible, you can easily put in about 200 hours on a single character.
This includes all dlc and building up settlements atleast with the basics.

They all are good. Story-wise New Vegas has the most depth. FO1-2 created the world, were amazing for their time, were well-written and are still fun if you can handle the graphics and slower turn-based gameplay. F03 did a great job of moving the world into 3D: leaving the vault for the first time and stepping out into the ruined world was so well done. FO4 gave us updated graphics, crafting, settlements, and carried forward the idea of faction choices from New Vegas. Even FO76 has fun single-player content after a few years of updates.

Yep, you can play the single-player FO76 content using just loot drops, container stuff, etc. -- also you need to grind for the crafting mats in FO4 too. I just did a bunch today hunting 50+ aluminum for the T-60 upgrades. Before that it was adhesive and screws for weapon upgrades.

The one main thing (there are others) about Fallout 76 that turned me off was that everything always broke, needed repairs. I spent more time on maintenance than on playing the game.

I think when you look at a game with a live service marketplace you can’t help but notice the ways in which it coaxes you into spending money. Sure you don’t have to. But a lot of people do. And the most insidious thing is that they coax you into making you think it was your choice. “Oh sure I could have scraped barrels for two hours but I decided to spend $4.99 instead. But I didn’t have to!”

When they added a paid skin that makes the handmade rifle look more like an AR-style rifle instead of just adding the R91 or service rifle I was done. I just don’t like feeling like a mark. And coming from FO4, with as much as you can say about it, at least it has that really great crafting system, to suddenly feeling nickel and dimed for everything just felt gross.

Some people might consider it cheating but something i do in fallout 4 is console command the armor/weapon and other gear I need for a particular build that I want to play and dump everything into the overseers office drawers in vault 111 and then pretend that it was my stuff from prewar that I hid so I can be set up for the wasteland

Let's say I want to play a detective build. I'll console in a 44 pistol and detective outfit etc and stash it away and then grab it

Because in that example my character was a detective prewar and he stashed his existing gear

Anyway what do you guys think about that?

I do that a lot. I roleplay a lot of different characters, with widely varying backstories. Most of them don't touch the main quests of Bethesda's games. Instead I use the game assets provided by Bethesda to tell stories that are unique to a particular character. This often means using the console or home-made mods to give them starter equipment that is appropriate to the backstories I am roleplaying.

For me it usually just goes as far as “Nate is former U.S. Army, I’m going to try to use US Army weapons and armor.” You can imagine given how inconsistent Bethesda has been about laser vs ballistics (FO3 vs FO4 pre war Army is a bit inconsistent) it’s sort of a guess.

Just gotta accept artistic license > lore, and the game designers didn’t think too hard about visual consistency between games. It’s the assault rifle. Is it supposed to be what the Army used pre war? Probably. Maybe the combat rifle though. Beyond that we just guess here haha.

If you take a look at the photo of the pre-war US Army infantry in FO76 you can see a couple with what look like combat rifles and a couple that are holding assault rifles. Except they’re way slimmer, more appropriately sized versions.

The thing that bugs me most about FO4 isn’t the assault rifle, it’s that there’s no R91 and all the pre-war cutscenes imply almost all the soldiers are using laser rifles (one has what looks to be a combat rifle, in the scene where they’re walking through the neighborhood). Whereas in FO3 the terminal entry says pre war energy weapons were limited prototypes.

If they gave us the more slimmer appropriately sized versions that would make more sense to me there's plenty of firearms in real world application that take inspiration from other weapons so who's to say that that gun isn't inspired by the other firearms in the world does that make sense

I have a problem with Survival HUD whenever the hunger/parched icons appear and then i eat or drink they dont go away instantly and i have to go to the pipboy for them to disappear its frustrating and i cant find a solution, maybe someone here can help.

I recently used immersive hud in survival and did not have this problem. Even with the mod pretty high up in the mod list. Could be a mod conflict then.

Also Check the mod survival settings first.

Bethesdas directions when it comes to firearms in their games is so bonkers that it actually detracts from the experience. They use fake gun types so they don't have to pay to use real ones.

Try everything, see what you like, you can easily switch playstyle and weapon types with the perk system. And you can max out your specials to 10 easily, so starting stats don't really matter.

Obsidian didn't have that problem in fact I'm a firm believer that either obsidian has a gun nut that works at the studio or hired outside help

As far as copywriting of guns that isn't a problem with the guns in fallout since the real life guns only go up to like 1990 and there's no copywriting on those guns

No worries, I had a blast up to level 289 on my first vanilla playthrough. Allied with everyone until I wasn't. Use all tools for high charisma for all speech checks with the characters, and always be maxing affinity with different companions. Have fun, and yeah I agree.

You can run into one of the Cats in the Commonwealth scavenging a wrecked car and he’ll say something like “just the part I was looking for.” So, I’d assume that there are at least some parts that both cars and power armor share.

The Nucleus. There's a merchant on the second floor that sells sets of zelot marine armor. Wetsuits too. Go there for all your marine armor needs.

My entire retirement for one character was becoming director of the institute, giving operators a majority of the parts of the park good for turning into civilian areas, pack get wild West and the zoo for military training. Institute slowly takes over and turns the park into an enclosed dome city where the surrounding area is flooded with water teleported in. The area around it is surrounded by artificially raised ground and dams to provide power and water purification so it becomes a hidden underwater technocratic city

like companions block a lot so maybe a melee weapon with one of the block triggers

The cryo armor effect that freezes melee attackers can be handy. I'm not sure if +AG +LUCK +PER do anything useful without VATS. Maybe +END so they take longer to fall down and sit out the battle? Reduce damage from mutants and humans could help too.

I can't take over any more supply settlements, I'm maxed out for later, but I manually farm my other settlements and send the Raider gangs hundreds of everything... and they're still unhappy lol So yeah, on weapons, my Sentinel carries the Aeternus neverending Gatling laser, while my current companion Danse has the Penetrating Gatling laser. I like to build up Ada to have a mini-gun and a Gatling laser. If I have the skill, I think Codsworth will have 5 separate weapons.

if your worried about happiness it might be other reasons it’s lower and their are other ways to buff it

supply lines cause a lot of issues and sometimes settlements attached to them don’t even register their supplies causing drops in the happiness

I think it's more for quest bugs, especially old ones that were fixed later by Bethesda. I played quite a bit with zero mods while getting my 100% Steam achievements and didn't feel like I needed it. One source of crashes on both PC and console is playing too long (more than about 2 hours). On PC exit to desktop, on console exit and do a full restart or true power down.

2 hours isn't even that long it shouldn't crash for only 2 hours but it is Bethesda

I think Morrowind and Oblivion have the same issue - run too long and the engine dies, often on a map change. New Vegas is really bad about this. Even Starfield will crash to desktop just walking across a planet, possibly on a hidden map change?

Nope. Bethesda hasn't fixed any of the quest bugs you may be referring to. So the UFO4P is definitely still relevant because of all of the ones it fixes, plus the numerous other issues it addresses as well.
As for crashing, it would depend greatly on what's causing the crash because most crashes can't be fixed this way, or they come from other mods we'd have no control over anyway.

Do you mean investing in stores (special perk helps you gain more caps from the shops), or the emporiums in build (shops take up least space, but emporiums display wares and take a lot of space) Hope that covers it.

If you have the warehouse building parts, you can build a decent multi level structure, and the manufacturing machinery has parts that go upwards, so you can connect the whole thing multiple stories.

You know the biggest issue with Creation Club and why it won’t catch on Bethesda? When we type in something like Power Armor in the search, it gives us a million results and like 2 power armor results. Navigating the menu system is tedious and an eye strain, and it isn’t quick and intuitive. Change those things and you might see a more positive influx towards its use vs other modding resources with regard to pc. Regardless, those are qol improvements that you should focus on for the Creation Club.

The BOS want to prevent any technology development that could potentially cause a catastrophic event like the nukes. They rather use force then confront be diplomatic. They are a threaten and interrogate first and ask questions later faction. But they are as close to an actual military force as you'll get for the wasteland. And cannonically they are still around. If the fallout series has anything to say about it with its prydwren.

The globe sits on a rotating base that moves in real time with your in-game character. As you explore, the globe turns to match your movement, and a small laser arm points to your exact in-game location. Fast travel? The laser shifts instantly. LEDs in the base create a radioactive glow, like a relic from a pre-war vault.
The base doubles as internal storage, connecting via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to store DLC, updates, and expansions. The globe starts with the full map of Fallout 4 already built in, and as new expansions or future games release, developers could unlock new cities, wastelands, or terrain as DLC—letting the world evolve without physically changing the globe. The concept extends to Skyrim too a globe of Tamriel with handcrafted mountains, forests, ruins, and glowing rune lights.
