afaik, mod author needs to reupload with a different name, and you'll need to remove all associated files to get back to a clean state

No quest, just a poi placed on a random planet with no indication. When you finally do find it, it's just 5 landing pads with random loot chests placed down in the CK. Then there's two 'mechs' protecting the place which are just 2 robots scaled to like 10 which are essential and can't die.

I put a lot of time and effort into my mods and spend months hand making my own assets, sure sometimes there are bugs, but there's bugs in everything, the game itself has bugs, I always aim to make my mods as best as they can be.

Man sometimes I doubt that there is anything in my brain after all. I am urrently editing a mesh and the back of the mesh was in the way of a scope. So I went into blender and removed parts of the mesh.
Went into the game, all good. Until I wondered why there are still parts in the way of the scope. Then I realised I removed parts of the mesh at the front, not the back.

Nah, definitely not. I talked with several modmakers about that. No physics on weapons
You can have them on clothes but not weapons
It's been done in Skyrim using tools that weren't put on fallout
FSMP/HDT did it in skyrim

Starfield's different because nobody's making animation tools but I reckon it can be done in fallout

I don't think starfield modding is ever going to hit that 'next level'. I think we're stuck with what we already have

eh, it took almost 10 years to get elden ring level hitbox accuracy and animation to skyrim, so I would say there is always a chance given enough time

yeah, also it's the same old song and dance that exists with skyrim - frequent updates to the codebase that require extensive reverse engineering are taxing, and people just have less enthusiasm when it comes to starfield, so updates are slower/delayed
I mean you see em in their discords right, Xedit folks still there doing stuff, the blender bridge folks still doing stuff, I assume, I'm sure some of them OGs are still around working these things out
ye shader injector guys said they would post their next update after starfields next big update, because they feel it would be wasted work rn

I looked into this, IIRC the dialogue itself calls a native CK condition function to check piracy and there is no actual numerical output

The scripts only check for a return value from the dialogue. I couldn't find a way to deduce what the actual math was for piracy success, the only thing I know is it is a function of the value of the cargo onboard the ship being pirated from

You can't directly call CK condition functions from scripts, you can just evaluate if they are true or false according to supplied parameters
it's not inherently a closed function that returns true or false, it should return an int or float at least

I'm not in the CK right now but I am over 99% certain that it returns a bool which the dialogue evaluates as a true or false on the speech challenge. Native condition functions available in the editor are not always accessible as native Papyrus functions via script, it just so happens that ~70%+ are (IsInSpace, HasKeyword, etc)

That I do not know. In all likelihood it would provide more insight. You may also be able to set up a script to evaluate the true/false return against an array of containers (with varyingly valuabel contents) while also looping through a larger array of player piracy strength values to get an idea of what's going on. That was my plan before I stopped working on it

Right. So if all you get is 0 or 1 when evaluating (assumed) PlayerPiracyStrengthMult * HiddenBethesdaFactor * TotalCargoValue you can guesstimate the middle value by varying the other two. Again, in theory 🫠

also because that would help verify if high level ship encounters could potentially become "non-piratable" because of some factor
even with rank 4 and a good ship
I mean, I used the rank 4 ravager from darkstar and that ship has 7.2k shields, and over 1.5k raw dmg per shot (not dps, dps is easy over 10k)
and I was like 100 levels above civilian ships
and they laughed in my face "have you seen our weapons" - bro, 1 click on my mouse for a single shot and you are space dust, straight through the shields wtf are you talking about <.<
and it wasn't like some rare outlier either, I tried about 40 different ships in different locations - the only ships that I found that worked were lvl 40 ish mining ships with NO weapons and NO cargo from the mining conglomerate mod
and those only worked about 80% of the time
In retrospect, I should just set up a custom scripted function for piracy in TSE and call it a day. I'd rather deal with some minor compatibility concerns for that line of dialogue than have a feature I'm not sure how to manage. I'll look into that for 1.1
If I can get it to work half decently I'll release it as a separate modder's resource in case anyone else wants to use it for their economy mods (or mods which alter piracy dialogue)

Yeah, having that limited to an internal condition function is kind of pants on head when it comes to trying to work around it or alter it. I don't know why I didn't think to do that in the first place.

Yeah, it's just more work and latency. Makes sense why they would do it on their end, just doesn't make sense to try to work around it as a modder.
As for Papyrus - I trust it about as much as Bethesda does. Which in fairness, probably still isn't very much 😆
anyhow, I'll crawl into bed and tomorrow I'm just going to cook a plugin that changes those two globals to 1 and 4 for low and high respectively and see what happens

it has 1 puny particle beam, I have 2 pbs, 4 lasers and 4 ballistic weapons - the lasers alone have a sheet damage rating of over 80
my power is a bit low, I'm at 35/40, but still okay
I have changed the piracy value to 6 (! that is triple the base amount) for the combat resistance check and the game still refuses to let me even enter the persuasion minigame
for reference, if you had the level 4 piracy perk your rating would be at 3.0
how is this even supposed to work?????
it's not like there is some chance for it to fail
it simply checks whether it will surrender immediately, enter the minigame or resist
based on the ships rating vs the threshhold
and even with double the maximum vanilla value some puny civilian ship is like "nah, we gonna fight you"

iirc that adds placable missionboard variants that are locked to max/min distances aka local and remote, if you were to use the local one you would get missions only inside the same system, so the chance for something like that would be way higher but still small

Yeah, the feature I'm adding is a va'ruun mission board request someone had. So it might be behaving different to vanilla due to the different location it was started from, I'm just hoping to get some confirmation someone's seen it in vanilla as you'll end up with up to two additional map markers on the planet, at least until the POI resets. If that's normal it's fine, if not I'll need to note it.

Oh, also are Va'ruun smuggling missions broken for everyone? I know that was true for me well before I started this so it's not mod related, but I'm curious if they work for anyone. For me, the captain only has generic dialogue so can't advance the quest. I'm talking specifically about the va'ruun mission board smuggling missions to return things to Dazra, not the generic one where you board a smuggling ship.

It's not a new mod yet, it'll either just get added to the va'ruun mini shrines or (of there are other consequences of having it installed) it'll be standalone. It's really nothing to get excited over lol, I was just trying to fix why Va'ruun mission boards placed on a ship don't refresh (it's true for Crimson Fleet ones as well).
It's because there's a location check for the player in the story manager branch. Which seems counterintuitive as there's a location override on the mission boards themselves, which isn't of any use in that situation.
wSkeever fixed the CF ones ages ago in their mission boards anywhere mod, that needed a bunch of location aliases altered too though. The Va'ruun one just needs the "player in Dazra" check removed.

I actually really like stuff that is hidden - I don't like searching for it per se, but it's always a great feeling when you eventually connect dots or come across something unexpected and get rewarded
If you enable the Scow and it's marker in NG+ when you've skipped the main quest it will actually auto start No Sudden Moves when you board, which will not be completable as there's no artefact there to add to the armillary when you get back to the lodge.

Hey guys does anyone know how to edit rough and normal maps, I have edited them the same as the textures but when I put them in game they don't show up properly. They get all reflective for some reason. It must be a import issue because if I extract the texture and put it back without changing it it has the same issue.
lol I just skipped all the stages and went straight to yearly payments because I couldn't be asked to repack a 60mb vid that I want to sent someone or get the lower quality voice encryption
not a texture guy, but that sounds either like something is missing or not loading correctly

I don't recall the name, but the description was basically starfield 2077, the artifact scrambled your brain and now you only got I think it was 21 days? to finish the main quest
not sure if you also had to unity in that time, or if simply finishing the mq would set you free
I worked briefly on a soft-permadeath prototype concept like that, where acquiring artifacts or defeating Starborn would create checkpoints. This was more for NG+ but it was a fun project. Unfortunately for it to work 'properly' and detect deaths you would need either time travel or SFSE.
Now that said, having a universal time limit on a playthrough that you can alter by completing tasks is actually a fun twist on that. Would work really well with some kind of roguelite NG+ modifiers.
Actually, what could be really fun is random playthrough restrictions (time limit, must collect X of Y to build armillary, must complete X of Y faction quests, etc) combined with those random modifiers (e.g. 0% gun damage, for melee/powers only, no powers, no Guardian ship, take damage slowly when in space or on land, etc) for each NG+. Has nobody done this yet?
I recall seeing creations that at least add modifiers or challenges to NG+
tbf until the temple/artifact part of the mq/unity runs gets completely reworked either by Bethesda themselves or some modder with more grit than brains, I don't really want it to take any longer
but I could see the appeal if that were the case
then again, I am currently using Darkstar on punish me difficulty and I have started to realize that actually knowing where free items are and what you can get where has become almost critical knowledge, because otherwise the game will just delete you in any combat encounter ^^

It definitely has some old-school design elements like the vendor artifact weapons that I didn't expect to see come back post-Skyrim
yeah and usually you aren't overly aware of where you can get each or which one is actually good (as they only ever scale once per universe and with no way to upgrade them in vanilla, most people would never bother with it naturally)

I enjoyed it for like 20 to 30 hours and then I just couldn't make myself play anymore. Even though a lot of separate gameplay features are cool it just doesn't come together in a game that would catch me for long.

If you fight those groups that are put down by ships you will notice them using powers regularly.
yeah, I love I don't have to do the grind thanks to Revelation but I am a bit sad the only solution to make it bearable in an easy manner was simply removing all the art
a couple, but you only fight him one other time (unless you side with him/have max persuasion+buffs)

That’s a dam shame. The only thing I’ve found intimidating and interesting about him was the whole “multiple selves” thing. I found that whole concept creepy since I was a kid playing TMNT II: The Arcade Game and we would swap the controllers on the NES among us if we died. The final boss Shredder would pull that multiple selves thing and I would freak out and hand the controller to one of my brothers. My eldest brother would be dying laughing. He always found that funny for some reason.

Also fun fact, using kah on them is really weird. Puts them in a forever down state and you still have to shoot them to get to the next phase of the fight.

you mean the shouts? yes, the player powers are spells and the npc ones are shouts - because that way they only have a cooldown and don't need ressource tracking

My favorite universe involves Desolation and Revelation mods, a missing Constellation, a quick run-through and doing away with Hunter/Emissary and then mods like Catalyst to spice up making the universe into the best possible place to be. Using all those levels and powers for good.
It works, but also it cuts out the Scow quests completely iirc. Or was that the other one? Not sure anymore. I tested them both and both had some drawbacks. Missing quests, missing voicelines, stuff like that. And also Constellation sometimes acted as if the character still died.

Catalyst is HUGE in making Radiant quests so much more immersive. You can spend hours tracking down a faction on a single planet, feeling like there's a goal and experiencing all kinds of new interactions.
No. I know the shouts were repurposed as SB powers. I mean like the dragon animations. I know in a FO4 deep dive, they claimed they had the Skyrim shouts still in the code. I was hopeful that some of the dragon animations were still left in the code for one willing modder to make that Great Serpent as the final boss dream come true. Lol

Well, that was part of my pitch. You have to fight The Great Serpent in space by a gas giant similar to Bannoc IV (without the lightning that causes damage) after the player character realizes that you can’t harm it because it flies around too much planet side. Then you do battle in space while epic (royalty free) choir music blasts in the background.

I hate when people be like "it's a different kind of game" because that is a stupid excuse there is no reason to not have those animations. RDR2 released 5 years before Starfield btw. And has at least 10 times more and better animations.
And don't get me wrong I am not asking for animations for everything like picking up stuff or using buttons etc. But generally more animations to make everything feel more natural.
I guess it takes a lot away from moments. Because sure, there is some mid writing here and there but also a lot of good stuff. That quest on the legacy proves it. Environmental storytelling is on point, the atmosphere is great, the voiceacting is superb.
Now imagine adding a typical Bethesda NPC into that scene with their monotonous dialogue movement lol
Also most of the animations that are in Starfield are actually pretty good, I enjoy to observe NPCs in combat for example. They have animations for combat rolls, vaulting over stuff, going into cover, blind fire and lots more.
I am on the NG 100 or so and noticed that outside of Bobby at New Atlantis space station there is no mention of Foster parent or Adoption in all of Starfield. I liked the kids in Skyrim and Fallout 4. Shame the player can’t have their own. And it’s weird that it isn’t even a background or trait. Also to all the authors who make mods, I love and appreciate you all so much, but please please put what is required in the listing of the mod, I am getting eye strain looking them up on my phone. 😉

the boy is called Bobby and the official greeting them treats him like he is coping about his parents being still alive and he is going to have to get foster parents
later, the boy hangs around the commercial district with his parents, who arrived later just like he said they would
His parents actually arrive? Never found that boy again after the initial scene

An adoption mechanic does sound like a good idea for a mod.
Currently you could use my Spawn NPCs and/or Recruit Any NPC mods to add children to your ship and have them sandbox around, but that's the extent of it.
I intentionally excluded child NPCs from NPC Clothing & Inventory Control, but a true adoption mod could perhaps let you choose from a list of outfits (hard coded and all child NPC compatible) and next time you see them they'd be wearing the new outfit.
Probably some other mechanics could be thought up.

Unfortunately the vast majority of mods are going to be PC only, and that's where 99% of all innovation is going to happen

There's a difference, in the previous Bethesda games you could still give children different faces, hence the various child overhauls that made them more varied and less potato-like. In Starfield we're stuck with the same 3 faces for kids; male, female, and Cora. If you try and give them a custom face even in xEdit, it just gets ignored by the game.
I did try a few experiments to make a child/adult hybrid to use adult facegen, but they were... less than ideal.
In Skyrim you could literally just paste an adult NPC's appearance data onto a child NPC and you'd get a child version of that face, it was pretty neat.

I would assume that program in Skyrim for NPC's appearance was done like 15 years ago, or more. That person or persons moved elsewhere or retired. It exists true. But someone would have to relearn or AI could learn it and move on with that method. You would think they could copy and paste the lines needed <shrug > oh well.
I mean it's hardly the only strange regression, something that was in Skyrim or Fallout already but for reasons unknown is missing in Starfield. Who knows 🤷

God, there’s a bunch of stuff I haven’t discovered yet
from what I remember the official explanation for regression between different creation engine versions was that they usually cut stuff out/deprecate the code completely that they don't need for the current project
they usually see what they need for the "current" project, then look for a way to adapt whatever code they have and toss out the rest
if there are parts left then it's purely coincidental and not because they actually planned to use it later on
tbh, when I first heard that a couple of years back I was pretty shocked - it's the most irresponsible way of "growing" your engine I could think of and they just keep doing it

that's also apparently why some parts of the magic system still remain, because they had adapted a part of it for fo4 but most of it got tossed and what is in starfield is just what they cobbled together with the rest that was still left - Bethesda has, by their own admission, zero mid- to long-term planning when it comes to their codebase

That's very strange if it's truly what they do. There are also vestiges of things you can see in the CK that have been redundant for literally decades now, like the "persist in the doomed world you have created" message you got in Morrowind when killing an essential character.

I can now officially not buy anymore mods containing archives unless I start culling my load order
this has to be some joke <.< skyrim can run with 4k mods and still be somewhat stable, but starfield dies if you load too many archives, give me a break xD

That skin is definitely doable
It would work, I have used the Gutter animation for a few different things, the Axe as well. I would suggest learning Blender or Plasticity first, then go check out Substance Modeler. There is a lot that Blender/Plasticity can do that Modeler can't. Plus you would be closer to industry standards working in those 2 versus Modeler.
Once you see the way in Blender, going to anything else is much easier.

Really wanting to get it, but my immersion loses the bap with crafting being the only method to get items, might make a short quest to take out powerful starborn with the armours being the rewards
Eh, I do that and magically every starborn won't spawn
It'll work for everyone but 3 random people who will tell me somehow every starborn in their game spawns as a mop
However, there is a terminal on the workbench that will inject these outfits into the game
There's also a boss arena with starborn wearing these armors
I think my next mod will include a quest tho!
