I watched this for the first time last night after putting it off for so long. The thing I think about Danny Boyle is that he's not interested in leaving his "mark" upon his work, like there wasn't any point during this where I was like "Oh that's such a Danny Boyle shot/thing to do", he's just simply very good at what he does which is making movies which is actually quite refreshing. Although admittedly I've seen very little of his work, just really this and Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and The Beach. I'll definitely be making more of a conscious effort to see more because this gripped me in a way Sci-Fi movies don't really.
One of the things I loved most about this is that the whole crew aren't some big "family", they're being sent on a mission and there's no witty back and forth or wise cracking at stupid shite (looking at you 'Life'). They simply "put up" with each other as much as they can which I feel is a more pragmatic approach. And another thing is that characters aren't in a rush to sacrifice themselves at the drop of a hat, they WANT to survive and will do as much as they can to achieve that.
One more thing, I read some Letterboxd reviews afterwards and there seems to be some mixed stuff about the 3rd act which I totally get. There being basically a Sun God Man Thing that suddenly becomes "the big bad" is certainly a WAY to end a movie like this but it's not like it ruined the whole thing for me. To me the whole movie earned its kind of climactic ending even if it is a bit daft.
One last shout-out to Michelle Yeoh and Hiroyuki Sanada, under utilized here but they're incredible regardless. Shogun is fantastic if you haven't seen it
I remember really liking this film, I potentially just liked the setting and atmosphere though. I can't remember too much about it.
I agree with most people that it gets mad towards the end when the guy gets all sun burned and then becomes magic and immortal.
i like the ending.
the film feels way more of an Alex Garland film than a Danny Boyle film.
hate that 'Adagio in D Minor' has been so overused in other films/TV shows/adverts
It's a movie I keep coming back to over the years. Generally when I recommend it to mates they end up enjoying it too.
I will say that over time I have come to appreciate the mad ending. I remember the first time I watched it I hated the third act but now it doesn't bother me as much. He had been doing push ups, naked, in the sun viewing room for months building up his resistance to solar radiation, probably you can dehydration and malnutrition on top of that, so it makes sense.
Yeah I never thought about that, even when the shields weere blocking most of it he was still getting his body used to it and maybe developing some sort of immunity. Still though, I did find the whole thing almost like the origin story of a Marvel villain, like outside the realms of physics
I was joking by the way, it is still wild to me
I think they have Capa come upon him in the middle of working out as this was the movie's way of telling you that despite the odds he's still in peak physical condition. Still a great movie though, Chris Evans does a good job I always find his character interesting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBoDT2y48dg This has gotta be one of the best "first song in credits" I've ever heard too
First song in the end credits of Sunshine(2007)
i like that its a bit silly. Like how he's always obscured and you can't quite see him cause....you cant look directly at the sun.
