Man, Tim Burton had a truly incredible run of films right from the jump: Pee-wee, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks! Even Sleepy Hollow is pretty fun
I still haven't seen his Apes remake, but Big Fish, too, was pretty good!
I know Apes is universally seen as awful.
Pretty much everything after Big Fish has felt like a hollow shell of a Tim Burton film. Not sure what happened to that guy!
Next week's episode is Amy and a Guest.
I presume Paul is officially observing strike as of that recording.
Also, maybe Devin Feraci is free
Well anyway, my opinion is that this movie is a perfect jewel of cinematic comedy and I'll hear nothing against it!
I agree. This movie is perfection. So silly and fun.
I didn't grow up with Pee-Wee (I was only vaguely aware of him), so this just doesn't connect with me the way it does with others.
The Soviets aren't first referenced in the film-within-a-film, but instead when Pee-Wee goes to the police, they deny his bike was stolen by the Soviets.
If we're going to include a Burton film it should be something like Beetlejuice rather than this.
100% taking Pee-Wee over Beetlejuice, but I would consider Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood as the choice.
Amy saying she’s hates swans because of their hissing but then on this episode said she mostly communicates with hissing wasn’t a reveal I was expecting
I rewatched it recently and had the same opinion as when it first came out. The apes 🦧 look amazing and I love their performances especially Tim Roth. The humans and story are boring.
Ed Wood, imo, takes the crown as the one Burton. Beetlejuice and Batman Returns are also up there for me. Pee Wee is really funny though, kind of underrated.
I recently went through all of Tim Burton’s library, (I’m going through the Blank Check backlog), and Ed Wood was head and shoulders my favorite. That said, I definitely have a soft spot for Pee Wee and many of the Big Adventure Jokes are imprinted on my brain.
I don’t think they mentioned this at all?
Pee-wee's Big Holiday is a 2016 American adventure comedy film directed by John Lee and written by Paul Reubens and Paul Rust. The film stars Reubens as Pee-wee Herman and Joe Manganiello as himself. The film was released on March 18, 2016, on Netflix. It is a stand-alone sequel to Big Top Pee-wee (1988), the third and final film in the Pee-wee ...
Paul briefly mentioned it. Directed by Paul Rust! A super fun movie. Correction- written by Rust, directed by John Lee. Thanks @pallid pivot
Written by Rust. Directed by John Lee.
I had never seen Pee-Wee's Big Adventure growing watching the show on it's original run. Watching it now, I suddenly realized that pretty much Kevin Smith lifted all of the plot points for 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Especially the whole third act. I feel dumbfounded for not knowing this. My kids always watched with us and the all the jokes still land for them.
What is the better gag?
Those are my two favorite moments in Big Adventure, but I have to vote Pee-Wee breaking character
I liked the parts of this movie that felt very Tim Burton and the parts that felt oddly David Lynch Twin Peaks.
I waited to listen to this episode because I had tickets to see Pee-Wee's Big Adventure on the big screen (and in 35mm) at a local theater that decided to show it as a tribute to Paul Reubens. I had such a good time seeing the movie again for the first time as an adult, especially with a huge 400-ish sold-out crowd that was laughing maniacally the whole time. The film really holds up, and Pee-Wee is such a bizarre and brilliant character creation.
I really enjoyed the Unspooled episode too, so much great context and commentary from Paul and Amy. Now I'm going to go back and listen to the Blank Check episode on this movie as well.
