Can you explain that please
explain why the y intercept is -1.5? it is because the line meets the y axis at -1.5
No the y=f(1/2x) transformation
ohh okayokat
so u have the coordinate let's say
(1, -4)
itll be hard to understand since u havent learnt it but I'll try my best
f(½x)
means that w every single x axis u would multiply by 2. so u just do the opposite of whatever is in the bracket. so the opposite of half is multiply by 2 or divide by a half right
so the coordinate (1, -4)
changes to (2,-4)
and u do that w every coordinate basically but once uno a coordinate u just copy the shape
Why aren’t we halfing the x coordinate?
because when doing fucntions u do the opposite for the x coordinates
So if it was y=f(2x) we’re halfing the x coordinate?
so if it was f(x+3) and u have coordiantes (5,2) u would minus 3 for the x oordinate so its (2,2)
yep
but it's different for the y coordinates
if it was
f(x)+3 that means ur changing the y oordiante
so if i had (2,2)
i was add 3 to the y
so it would be (2,5)
so for the x u do the opposite but for the y u dont
yeppp
yes
Let’s say that same quadratic was drawn as well as y=f(1/2x)
How would we describe that transformation?
we would say translation in the right by 1. or vector
(1
0)
and i know that because when i wrote the coordinates out the x oordinate went from 1 to 2
so the graph must've moved to the right by 1
But wouldn’t that be y=f(x-1)?
Gotchu
i believe thats correct
Tysm
nwsss
Can I ask one more?🙏
oh btw sorry u were correct here but w the f(½x) its not translation in the right by 1. sorry for that. im actually not sure hoe u describe the transformation.
yes sure
for f(x-1) it would be translation by 1 in the right but for f(½x) im not toally sure but i believe u can say its an enlargment
Yo 💀
because the graph stretches out. its not actually moving
Wait so I was correct?*
yes u were
it is -1.5
The original graph is y=x^2-2x-3 so how would you form an equation with y=f(1/2x). Is it just y=2x^2-4x-3?
Or is the opposite and I’m halving
goated choice
hmm okay so for these types of questions u replace the x with ½x to find out the new equation I believe
Thanks bruh
Um doing all of this Yh
Ym
I jus looked at the y intercept 💀
Am I meant to be doing allat
For tougher questions
but on desmos the y intercept is (0,-3) when doing y=f(1/2x)
Desmos is a liar
😭😭
so usually when ur working out equations like this. well for me. i work out what x is equal to and then i replace the x with ½x to find out the translated x oordinate
wdym
Yk the equation of the line
He used it to find out x
And then halved it
I think
what so factorise the eqn then halve the values of x?
What’s the eqn
so for x²-2x-3
the roots are
x=3 and x=-1
and to do f(½x)
i would change the x to ½x
so ½x = 3 and ½x = -1
then I solve for x so
x = 6 and x = -2
those are the new transformed roots
for what?
The question
im not sure what u mean
Hol on
so the new equation is x^2-4x-12?
okay
run bro
lemme see 1 sec
yess
thats correct
🥴🥴 im not the best at explaining
if u create a new ticket and ask a maths mentor to explain they fould probs explain it better
nah i'm just stupid for not understanding lmao
<@&791435371564892232> 🙏
i dont think they're gonna read the whole chat 😭🤣
pong
oh lollerz
Clarence the goat explain please
what was the question again?
firstly, is this correct
"so og eqn is x^2-2x-3
after y=f(1/2x)
the eqn becomes x^2-4x-12"
You're right I cba
HEN PLEASE
What 😭
IM SO CONFUSED
LMAO
Is this what you're asking
😭😭😭
and a few other qs...
love you
no it doesn't
substitute $\frac{x}{2}$ into the original function
^ in replace of "x"
clarence
my bad. i didnt think it did. i was going to substitute ½x into the x in the equation but i thought that was too long
so y=1/2x^2 - x - 3?
no, the 1/2 x has to all be squared
(x^2/4)?
0.25x²-1x-3 i believe
yeh
and how would we describe the transformation if both y=x^2-2x-3 and 0.25x²-1x-3 were drawn
the y intercept is still (0,-3)
f(x/2) is a horizontal stretch
factor 2
What is the f?
function
I aint been taught it yet
Oooh we got taught functions
But not on graphs
OOOOH I GER IT NOW
so u find the equation of the line
And then use the function
So in this case you’d half the whole equation of the line?
Yeah, the topic would be called graph transformations I'm guessing if you still wanted it
Yhh thank you
dont think u half the whole equation. u just subsitute the ½x into wherever the x is on the equation
So, is there a quicker way of drawing y=f(1/2x) other than multiplying each x coordinate by 2?
Makes a lot more sense they told us about it in the task
I see thank you brother
I get it now
No, that's what you do
Cah cl looking at all these equations in chats confuse me
Seeing equations typed out is a mind mess
You keep the y coordinates the same then multiply all the x coordinates by 2
got it, last q is so ONLY the x coords are multiplied by 2 whilst the y coords stay the exact same?
Gotchu gotchu
yep
Don’t u half it?
If the function is f(1/2x)?
You really only need to do it to x intercepts and the turning point
No you multiply it by 2 unfortunately
Which is annoying because ½f(x) would mean you'd have to half all the y coordinates
if y=x^2-2x-3 what's y=2f(x) as an equation?
Probably best
Thank you for the help tho
Times by 2
y = 2x² - 4x - 6
Aren’t we squaring (2x) though😭
waiiit nvm that's y=f(2x)
Thank you
Ooooh i get it now
Bruh my nephew is beefin me too much goin on
But I get it now
Thank you for the help ym
Np :D
worst topic by far
Nah circle theorems
Esp proofing
I get angry when I see them
185 messages for this😭
Bro 😹😹😹
This took a whole surgical team
Yk that clip of that kids trim got messed up
And the whole barber shop was tryna fix it
Reminds me of this
😭😭😭😭
@warped sigil LAST Q I PROMISE. How would we work out this equation of the line? I know we have (x+1)(x-3) but what about the scale factor thingy
Son the whole barbershop is trying to fix lil homie haircut 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Lmaoo
Sub in the turning point coordinates into a(x+1)(x-3)
y intercept is -4
i meant turning point
Into the X bit
?*
but y intercept is at -3, y = a(x+1)(x-3) where a * 1 * -3 = -1, so a is 1
What is a 💀
If you want to find the equation of a quadratic you need a constant like that because many quadratics go through x = -1 and x = 3
So you have a scale factor at the front to make sure you can find the correct one
Ooooh i get it now
what does the scale factor actually do?
Kinda
does that determine the stretch of the graph?
multiplies everything by the scale factor
Man my brains hurtin m my nephew keeps attacking me wit this toy dinosaur
The stretch in the y direction kinda yeah
Alrighty thank you for like the 4th time
Goated mentors Clarence and Hen
Facts 🦅🦅🦅
Here's an example if needed
Pringle a leg aswell but he ain't a mentor
But yeah
Cl hé should be
Thanks :D
so the scale factor is the y multiplier basically
Everything multiplier
Because also gradient
Unless I’m being a goober
And I’m wrong
Idk these key words bro
I jus know it by looking at it 😹
My math terminology is dead
My maths is dead
I love maths but hate is so much at the same time
Jus some topics u gotta work on
Same bro
Like
If I’m doing well I’m happy
If I don’t understand what’s happening
I become angry
And I start attacking stuff
It's so satisfying when you complete a big mark question
And get it correct the first time
what was part b to that questionn btw
yes please
Yes
Gotchu
Think u gotta take into account the gradient from the last question
wdym
@vernal nymph
It’s the opposite for the x coordinates
Similar to how f(1/2x) is doubling the x coordinate
That’s a mind mess bruh
Bro there’s a visitor in front of my door pray for me she don’t come in I beg
Inshallah
Bro no way that's year 10 work
It is mane 😹😹
They even said in the task
They ain’t taught us it bruh
But I’m him yk
So ik it
doing that shit in AS
Graph transformation is a Year 12 topic
Bwamba these teachers takin the piss then
Man can’t wait till I finish gcsee
Nah but do u do circle theorems
In a level
No
Alhamdullilah bro
Not in AS at least idk about year 2
Nah if they do that’s depressing
really? i did it at gcse
what exam board do u do
IGCSE edexcel
further maths
i do edexcel not the igcse one
I do igcse edexcel 💀💀
i remember one question that caem up in a past paper w graph transofmration and we had to write down the trasnformation
for gcse
I do not remember doing graph transformations at gcse at all
maybe we did
Does anyone have the last gcsee exam question for math
Apparently it was some optagon or sutti
Or like some hexagon n everyone was bugging out over it
Bro had early onset dementia
idk what last question ur talking about. for the gcse this year?
Idk if it was a last question
This year yh
oh i didnt do gcse this yr. im going into yr 13 in september
aha thanks man
Nah I’m joking
😭 lol
You did have to know it for IGCSE
Man’s evolved to year 13
Lol
someone said that to me when i did my chem exam when i asked to see the notes they were holding in their hands. then the next chem test they asked me a question and i was so aggressive and said im praying on YOUR downfall now
#traumatising
💀💀💀
Mandem really be some professional haters bruh
Hol on
My cat Locked herself in the toilet
oh 😄
