I got up to -1/2a as the gradient and y = -x/b + 12/b as the equation of the line
but i have no idea what to do next

make a pair of simultaneous equations
how would you do that
using y-y1 = m(x-x1) ?
you have 2 points where the equation passes through
substitute the y and x values in the equation of line l
and you have a pair of simultaneous equations with a and b
for example
7a + 5b - 12 = 0
