can someone help with this question?

#

Convert 8.87 x 10 to an ordinary number.

gray hinge
#

is it just 10, no 10 to the power of something?

#

if so, literally just do 10 times by 8.87

fringe bloom
#

dw all good but this quetion is confusing

thanks

#

nope

cosmic stream
#

blinks

#

I swear that’s right

gray hinge
#

you do 7 * 2 * 10^5 * 10^5
14 * 10^10
1.4 * 10^11

#

you have to add the powers

cosmic stream
#

ohhh

#

it’s multiply

#

wait no I multiplied them

#

idk what I did

gray hinge
#

when you multiply powers you add the indices

#

a^b * a^c = a^(b+c)

cosmic stream
#

yeah I think I just got confused with multiplying and adding

fringe bloom
#

thankssss

cosmic stream
#

because I was adding standard form numbers for homework the other day

fringe bloom
#

is this correct??

gray hinge
#

but 10^5 + 10^5 ≠ 10^6

fringe bloom
#

is my question correct?

gray hinge
#

you are dividing not multiplying

#

and even if it was multiplying, it would be 2.94 * 10^16

fringe bloom
#

soo what is it?

gray hinge
#

6 * 10^2

#

you do:
4.2 / 7 = 0.6
10^9 / 10^6 = 10^3

so it’s 0.6 * 10^3
we change this to make 0.6 into a number between 1 and 10:
6 * 10^2

fringe bloom
#

thx

gray hinge
#

we multiply the 0.6 by 10 and, to keep the value the same, we divide 10^3 by 10

fringe bloom
#

@gray hinge I’m stuck on q13

#

I keep getting 0.047

gray hinge
#

5 * 10^-2 = 5 * 1/10^2 = 5 * 1/100 = 1/20

#

3 * 10^-3 = 3 * 1/10^3 = 3 * 1/1000 = 3/1000

#

1/20 - 3/1000 = 50/1000 - 3/1000 = 47/1000 = 0.047

#

0.047 = 4.7 * 10^-2

fringe bloom
#

Oh-

#

Ops

#

Thanks

np

#

when you convert a decimal to standard form, count the total number of 0’s then do the number after it in standard form times by 10 to minus that number of zeroes

#

for example

#

0.00034

#

•there’s 4 zeroes

#

•the number after the zeroes in standard form is 3.4
