it depends on ur overall direction

if ur displacement is positive, when throwing (for example) a ball up

#

then gravity is negative

#

but if displacement u count as negative for throwing up, then gravity if positive

#

on the other hand, when throwing ball down, gravity is positive and displacement is positive
