Weird boot behavior, worked fine last night but didn’t wanna boot just now and was hanging on dram and cpu light. Power cycled, took 5 minutes to boot with memory context restore now SUPER slow extraction speeds

#

@hallow kestrel

#

Temps are good, no overheating, normal resource usage

#

I have no idea wtf is happening

hallow kestrel
#

out of my ballpark cus i have zero experience with am5 other than memory training taking forever

dire smelt
#

It’s usually a 10 second or less boot

hallow kestrel
#

you can try with one stick and that shpiel

dire smelt
#

I have mem context restore on

amber lava
#

first step, check windows update to see if you had an update overnight, heh

dire smelt
#

It definitely shouldn’t as I fully powered off the system

amber lava
#

even though that shouldnt affect the boot time

dire smelt
#

I don’t know if this could be related but

#

Before I turned it off last night, had a gpu drivsr timeout

#

Never booted after just went to bed, now this

#

But I don’t see how that could cause this

amber lava
#

next question, do you have more than 1 drive?

dire smelt
#

Yes

amber lava
#

do you see the same speed issue on all drives?

dire smelt
#

Os is on my 1tb, only games and mods on the 2tb

dire smelt
amber lava
#

would try that same extraction on both drives

dire smelt
#

I will

amber lava
#

also would do an sfc /scannow

dire smelt
#

that’s cmd right?

amber lava
#

ya, admin terminal

dire smelt
#

Bruh I am the admin

#

lemme do it

amber lava
#

ya, but regular cmd doesnt get admin rights

dire smelt
#

Ok

#

What am I looking for

amber lava
#

it will tell you if it had to fix anything

#

shouldnt take long to run

dire smelt
#

running

#

will do the extraction nextp

#

all good there

#

Yeah both drives doing it

#

I can usually extract cinebench in seconds flat

amber lava
#

ok, next would probably see if you are getting memory errors. have you ever used prime95?

dire smelt
#

No but I can check on samsung magician or crystal disk right?

#

I checked both on magician like a week ago

amber lava
#

crystal disk will show you drive speed itself. would be good to verify, but i meant actual memory errors

dire smelt
#

gotcha I’ll download prime

amber lava
#

its a tiny program, easy to use

dire smelt
#

but yeah this drive behavior is weird af

#

drive 1 and drive 2 respectively

#

It’s usually done in seconds

#

uh

#

which test chaos

amber lava
#

large fft

#

some people run this for a long time, but you should know within a couple minutes if you are getting errors

dire smelt
#

gotcha

amber lava
#

that will slow your system down a lot by the way while it is running

dire smelt
#

yeah I wasn’t planning on doing anything on it in the meantime

amber lava
#

i think it will ding at you if it gets an error. but it will also display it

#

when you want to stop the test, just hit escape and ok

dire smelt
#

gotch

#

Nothing yet after 3 passes

#

On each core

amber lava
#

ok, most likely fine there then

dire smelt
#

Then wtf happened…

amber lava
#

that test helps to see if you are getting cpu memory controller errors or actual memory errors, without having to run a full out memtest for hours

sharp nimbus
#

We’ve tried just restarting right?

dire smelt
#

even if mem context restore turned itself off it wouldnt have taken THIS long

dire smelt
#

restart and two power cycles were what were required

#

Just to get it to boot

#

And by restart I just mean shut down aftee a failed boot and light hangs

sharp nimbus
#

Do you have hwinfo or cpuz?

dire smelt
#

Hwinfo has been up

#

Nothing weird I can see

sharp nimbus
#

FCLK = memory speed/2?

dire smelt
#

where would I find that

#

besides bios

sharp nimbus
#

One of the items in HWINFO should be fabric clock

dire smelt
#

ah

#

2000

sharp nimbus
#

Is your memory 4000?

dire smelt
#

6000

#

Did expo shit itself and turn off mem context restore?

sharp nimbus
#

Pretty sure it should be 3000 (FCLK)

#

Your IO die voltage may need to be increased

amber lava
#

my fclk is 2000

dire smelt
#

Voltages are above my pay grade

sharp nimbus
#

Oh must be different between 4 and 5 then, scratch that

amber lava
#

you probably mean memory clock

sharp nimbus
#

Cause on Ryzen 5000, FCLK 2000 for DDR4 4000

dire smelt
#

I’m gonna go look in bios real quick

sharp nimbus
#

That’s a good idea too

#

This stuff is too complicated why can’t we all just go back to writing data on paper

dire smelt
#

Expo is on and mem context restore is on still

#

Anything else to look for?

#

It booted quick this time at least

amber lava
#

ifyou havent changed anything, no

dire smelt
#

I havent

sharp nimbus
#

Yeah should be good to give it a whirl lol

#

You can also see your voltage rails, if they’re lower than expected that could indicate a loose 24 pin

#

Like I had my 12v reporting 11.1, wiggled cable and it went back to 11.94

dire smelt
#

I have no idea what to do with voltages

sharp nimbus
#

Yeah that’s fine

#

It’ll always be a little off

dire smelt
#

Lol well im glad I went in anyways

#

fans were set to dc and not pwm

#

however

#

for some reason no rpm listed on pump…

#

ah that would be a wiring thing

#

But still confused about the boot and drive speeds

#

any other ideas?

dire smelt
#

@sharp nimbus is it normal for 12v voltage on the mobo to drop a little occasionally?

#

It was at 12 when gaming but I pulled a youtube video and it dropped

sharp nimbus
#

You can always wiggle the 24 pin

dire smelt
sharp nimbus
#

Also try reseating the drive, the CPU, and the RAM see if any of that helps

#

Such a weird problem I’m surprised chaos and Markus’ tips didn’t work

dire smelt
#

gotcha

#

it gasnt happened again but yet but i will do all that when my new drive comes in anyway

sharp nimbus
#

There’s also a chance that it literally just got stuck on that one file because the file was messed up

dire smelt
#

sfc was fine though

sharp nimbus
#

Happens sometimes to me, and I just reinstall the zip

dire smelt
#

yeah but the boot time issue and it doing twice on two different drives?

sharp nimbus
#

If there is no built in integrity check on the file, sfc can’t check integrity, so it’s not perfect for non os files

dire smelt
#

maybe but i redownloaded it so idk

#

it was just cinebech file lol

#

the boot issue still makes no sense

sharp nimbus
dire smelt
#

yea i gotcha

#

i did however figure out my fans were on dc and not pwm….

#

guess i forgot to switvh it when i swapped mobos lol

sharp nimbus
#

I’ll keep thinking about it and will drop a message if i think of anything, but so far other than what’s been said I got nothing

dire smelt
#

gotcha

#

my aio pump was permanently at 2500 rpm and never went higher

#

lol

dire smelt
#

@sharp nimbus with a game open. This bad?

#

Could this possibly lead to driver crashes if the 12V rail voltage drops just a bit too much?

#

it’s floating between the .6 and .9

#

ooo now 11.568…

sharp nimbus
#

I doubt it, looks fine to me

#

Bigger issue is if it’s consistently low like 11.3, fluctuations are to be expected

dire smelt
#

gotcha

dire smelt
#

Ok well I’m having stutters in no man’s sky and the voltage is 11.5-11.6

abstract bough
#

how old are your SSD drives. They maybe starting to fail. Use something like CrystalDiskInfo to check your read/write health

dire smelt
#

it’s not that

#

I’ve also tested that with samsung magician anyways

pure flame
#

Did you update your amd drivers like within the last few days?

dire smelt
#

Yeah
