Spec List:
Ryzen 7 5800x CPU
MSI B550 Gaming Plus
EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3
32GB 3600Mhz Ram
Corsair RM750 PSU

Issue: I've been experiencing a problem where my primary monitor (1 out of 2) would randomly turn black for 1-2 seconds and then return to normal long periods of time before happening again. It would range from 30-3 hours, it would be normal, and then do the blackout thingy. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this, it gets extremely frustrating especially when playing competitive games. I've already tried switching to new cables, using different ports on the GPU, and switching out the monitor with a different one. I just find it odd that its ONLY my primary monitor while my second monitor is chilling.

I also have another issue where on DX12 games specifically my game would crash with DX12 error related messages such as "DEVICE_ERROR_HUNG" or "D3D FATAL ERROR." This is something that I've had a temporary work around for (just capping my fps).

These two things seem like it could also be a power related thing as well but I am not sure.

I guess I have three questions:
Is my gpu faulty?
Should I get a new gpu or psu?
How do I fix the monitor problem?

Troubleshooting steps:

  • DDU (A few times)
  • Updating/reverting drivers
  • DISM check and SFC /SCANNOW
  • Undervolted
  • Turn off all OCS including XMP
  • Temps are normal (40c on idle 80c max on load)
  • Windows updates

the monitor problem might just be the cable

#

so you’ll want to replace that

i had the same issue and found it to be the cable, i swapped from an hdmi to a higher quality display port then didnt have the issue

Would that be in the monitors settings?

#

or in windows

#

No settings like that on my monitor

supple nacelle
#

some monitors say 144hz for example but are actullay 120hz until you hit the "overdrive"

olive sun
#

My monitor doeesnt have an overdrive mode

#

I have an LG 27GL850 if that helps

supple nacelle
#

have you tried re mounting your gpu, cpu, or ram? maybe all 3?

olive sun
#

Yeah I've reseated all of those before

#

gpu just some like normal pc cleaning so it gets reseated once in a while

#

I replaced my ram some time after getting my graphics card and the problem still persists

#

and cpu I did once just from replacing thermal paste

supple nacelle
#

how about you go try doing the ram and gpu right now

#

is your gpu new?

#

as in not bought used?

olive sun
#

I wouldnt think thats the problem as ive reseated them multiple times while the monitor thing has been happening

#

it was new but i got it off of ebay

#

thats why im suspecting it mightve been faulty

#

but when i got it box had the appearance of being sealed

#

and film was still on the gpu

#

and everything was in the box

supple nacelle
#

well it was someone probalby just reselling it then

olive sun
#

yeah thats what im guessing

supple nacelle
#

so zero issues with the 2nd monitor?

olive sun
#

nope

#

i could be playing a game

#

and my monitor just randomly blacks out

#

its not like a pattern

#

just random

supple nacelle
#

have you updated drivers recently?

#

or checked components temps?

olive sun
#

yea to both

#

gpu never goes beyond 80

#

c

#

and cpu same

#

idle at 40ish

#

for both

supple nacelle
olive sun
#

after i posted this forum i decided to ddu

#

and everytime I update my drivers

supple nacelle
#

okay

olive sun
#

still happens

supple nacelle
#

you said you have an undervolt?

olive sun
#

I did for a bit

#

but it never fixed anything

supple nacelle
#

it wouldnt

olive sun
#

so i just forgot ab it

#

i just thought it couldve been a power problem or somethin

supple nacelle
#

to eliminate the monitor as the problem you could make your 2nd one the main one and use it as such for a day and see if the issue keeps happening

olive sun
#

Yeah i could try that

#

i just havent yet because this happened when I had a diff monitor

#

when I had an MSI monitor as my primary it would do the same thing

supple nacelle
olive sun
#

and then i replaced the cable

#

and then ended up replacing the monitor

#

and it still happens

#

tbh i think its just a faulty gpu

#

especially w the DX12 related crashes

supple nacelle
#

not cable, not monitor, not ram, not drivers

#

do you have another system to put the gpu into

#

or can you try taking off the undervolt

olive sun
#

not rn

#

and yeah my gpu isnt undervolted rn

#

i think i uninstalled afterburner a while ago

#

which is where i did the undervolt
