CPU: Ryzen 7 7700x
RAM: G. Skill Flare X5 DDR5 6000 CL36
GPU: XFX 7900 XTX Merc Speedster 310
Storage/disk:
Boot - 980 Pro, 500gb
Storage - WD Black SN850X, 2tb
Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus 650 Pro, bios v. F3
Power Supply: Corsair HX 1000
OS: Windows 10 Home

I built my pc in late January. Since then, I've had 23 crashes that result in a critical error in event viewer. Problem is the error isn't very telling, and the computer just shuts off at random regardless of what I'm doing at the time. There's never a BSOD, the keyboard/mouse lights all turn off, monitors just go black suddenly, but the pc is still receiving power (motherboard power button light is still on). Unsure if this is helpful, but when the crash happens, the indicator lights for caps lock, num lock, etc don't turn on, and I have to hold the power button for a second and then try turning it back on, otherwise it just stays black. After talking to several different people, the general consensus was that I should start with replacing the PSU. I contacted Corsair and finally got the replacement PSU yesterday and installed it. I got another crash tonight that was the same as all of the previous... I'm pretty frustrated at this point and unsure of what to do. There doesn't seem to be anything obvious I can do to cause the crash intentionally.

If anyone has any idea what component or steps I should take next, please share

Things I've tried and they haven't made a difference (hopefully didn't forget anything):
Replaced PSU, downgrading or updating BIOS, XMP/EXPO being on or off, my old GPU (1070) and my new GPU (7900xtx), updating various drivers, monitored temps of every component I could for multiple weeks and saw nothing out of the ordinary.

Those critical errors you're seeing are from you shutting the system down because it didn't shut down properly when holding the power button down to shut it off.

I want to say it might be the CPU needing to be reseated, but that should be a last option check.

Do you have the computer sitting on carpet? Static discharge can cause the PSU to trip to protect the system if you zap the case, but it's not truly grounded through the ground plug power cord.

It is on the carpet, yeah @fervent socket . I had that thought as well because my house is really dry in the winter, but others that I talked to said it's pretty unlikely. What would I need to set it on to negate this? Anything hard?

#

Unfortunately the pc doesn't fit on my current desk, otherwise I'd have it there, but I'm moving in about a month so I didn't invest in anything to keep it off the carpet

if you have some cardboard box or piece of wood you can put under it to test if that is the issue, it may work fine

#

normally the system would shut off if it was zapped but static discharge can also freeze the system if it wasnt quiet enough to trip the psu

if cardboard is enough, I'll set that up right now!

#

a few times the crash has happened when I've gotten up out of my chair, or when one of my cats touched my pc, but I thought it was just coincidence honestly

#

Alright. I put it onto a piece of cardboard. As a test, I left my pc on while I did it, and it crashed... 👀 @fervent socket

#

had a perfectly sized piece lol

Ah, just realized I should keep any loose cables that are plugged in off the floor now, too... time to put cardboard under the power cable??

dry rooms with carpet are bad for computers to sit on

#

also take the side panel off

#

you havent removed the plastic on the glass

#

that will cause static build up

last cipher

gotcha, yeah I can try a thin box as well (sturdy enough to hold the whole thing)

#

ohh

fervent socket
#

dont put the case on a box so it doesnt tip over

#

dont remove the plastic yet jsut take the panel off

last cipher
#

Yeah was gonna remove that once I moved just to keep it clean but I can remove it anyway

#

not sure if I should take the side panel off though, I have some... very curious pets

fervent socket
#

just try to move the cables off the carpet as much as you can

#

1 or 2 layers of cardboard should be enough but you might need wider and longer pieces

#

also if you can try discharging yourself on something metal in your room, it will help

#

before you sit and touch the mouse

@main forum thoughts?

#

anything to add?

One moment, can reivew in a sec

I'd start with general troubleshooting like usual. In this particular case may try DDU after windows updates/corruption checks

#

But this is odd

This sounds like unsecure power connections from instinct tbh

I don't think I had actually moved it yet when it crashed, I just touched it

Probably going to try swapping out my cablemod cables for the original psu cables

Is that something you can repeat? You mentioned it turned off a couple other times when something touches it...? That just sounds so odd

I can try yeah

i used to have this problem all the time when i was using an ungrounded wall socket. old house with old wiring and dry winters made life really crap for trying not to zap everything and it was made worse when i had my desk on carpeting with no choice in that matter. i put wood under my computer and hung the wires off from the desk to avoid more issues. i still have to discharge myself on my fridge or stove before going back to my computer in the living room. not an issue when it's humid
