Her identity absolutely doesn't. In story her goals and ambitions definitely revolve around him. Essentially the story places her in the position where her chief goal is helping him win. Who she is as a person is definitely more than that, but it is the aim she devotes herself to.

Her character either evolves into her rejecting that notion over time or reinforcing it. Both can work, and both could be cool. Era is cool.

Julie + Kai dynamic proves to be yet another of those, along with Era, magic worldbuilding, Kai's father and old Corestrike worldbuilding, everything to do with Clarion Corp, Dubu's relationship with Clarion Corp and Rasmus, how Asher managed to be allowed to play Corestrike to pay back her fines as a convicted criminal (there's a million better ways she could earn that money, what's the story behind her being able to use this one), Datablade as a dynamic, the list goes on and on and on and on.

I think Era is a victim of early game lore writing. Like, don't get me wrong I think early on they weren't intending to depend on the character's lore as much as they were depending on the gameplay to sell the game
And as a result early characters get very simplified, shortened lore blurbs as compared to a lot of the later characters (case and point: Nao)

She's one of the more dire victims of it but you can see it in the other early characters, too I think

So much of all of it is left to interpretation. I'm sure there was a lot of lore from the pre beta version of OS that they sorta had to scrap when they turned insect alien lady into goth witch girl when they shifted the tone they were going for (and barely any media exists publicly for that version of Era) but I think that's why a lot of it feels gutted

It may also be why the designs sometimes feel like they don't fit the character as well as one might, cuz of stuff like how liyart describes Era's character prompt. It says "sleepy goth witch" if memory serves. There's naught about shyness, even tho that's the first word you think of when you see her animated and in game and you can't help but think "this girl would not wear that..."

Maybe I'm thinking too meta but this kinda stuff I feel is like. The result of so many factors outside of the lore and the game itself and the inner machinations of game development that we simply don't know about

I always envisioned a critical payoff for any relationship between these two being X getting seriously injured and Juliette stepping up to bat for EM just to prevent them from getting disqualified from an important match.

No good payoff comes without setup. One of the things I like about this pairing is how ambitious it is. That goes for the “enemies to lovers” trope in general, but you have to cross both the bridge of Juliette’s preconceptions about Kai, and of Kai’s general lack of attention to romance in this one. It’s more than the couple getting over a mutual grudge, as frankly the grudge isn’t even mutual.

It’s a unique little dynamic, and a fun one too!
