no actually this is so true

like in canon voicelines he just seems like he has an inflated ego (which shows signs of being his 'mask' of sorts and a crutch; when you play him and get KO'ed, in one line he gets worried about whether or not the cameras were on him) and is a bit snide towards everyone but I don't see him actively being super hostile either outside of Estelle? He just generally is like "I'm better than you all lol :)"

the only person he seems to be annoyed/hostile towards is Estelle, his sworn rival and enemy, and then it's exasperation (X), playfully snide ribbing (Jules), disinterest (nearly everyone else). The only one that's fairly ambiguous to me is Era because the sentences he says with her are that of a friend's but the way he (by extension his VA Robbie) delivers it is fairly sarcastic so it's hard for me to tell if he means it but is keeping up his persona since they're in public or he's just like that (I could be misinterpreting it though? His lines with Era are the only ones to me that feel vaguely ambiguous as to where the character himself stands)

maybe I'm holding out hope because I was blindsided by Estelle's characterisation in the visual novel that was at odds with her voiced lines where in the voiced lines she seems pretty mature if a little snobbish while in the visual novel she was super frustrating and rude so I'm hoping that Kai is just kind of full of himself in the canon voice lines but is pretty nice to his fans off the field. He's all about his image and reputation. Balance it out a bit 😂

The trick is Kai is so trained for the spotlight that he can't stop sounding like that whether he's being genuine or not.

Then once it clicks that people can't tell he's being nice when he's actually trying to be nice it hits him like a truck. Bro just wants to express his feelings, but everyone's so used to the persona that they can't tell when he's not faking it.

That's another one of the little things that I think about with him. I write Era unlike other characters as actually seeing through it because she's known him forever (it's why she has such a high view of him even when others don't) and X's inability to properly interpret Kai's meaning is part of the schism in their relationship.
