This is incredibly funny however when you think of all the other strikers like KaiKai. After being made to join rasmus’s team she’s just exposed to a whole new world outside of the whole revenge and doom and it’s just silly strikers hitting the core. Also before I was going to bed I was thinking about the familiar stuff, and what if all witches that have familiars can choose how connected they are to their familiars. (Like a literal percentage). And basically what this does it make your more in sync with your familiar but in exchange you experience more and more feelings and emotions together as well as injury.

So most magicians would never sync with their familiars all the way— who would want to feel the pain of a familiar anyway when they were doing all the fighting? Except Kai. In an effort to push himself to the max he links himself to his familiar 100% Of course this leads to a tremendous amount of firepower and coordination with his familiar, but if it it gets hurt, so does he. And if it dies, he dies.

NOW! Because of this link he’s tied with his familiar. All of his feelings and emotions are felt and also expressed by the familiar (of course its a lizard so it cant really show them more detailed ones) but anything it expresses is 100% Kai

X and Kai arguing and having a heated argument-storming out on one another and the lil guy following X and sulking the entire time. Kai willing himself to completely ignore the fact that his familiars exposing him but again, X who does not know this simply thinks even the lizard is on his side and takes it with him.

And a friendly reminder—Kai feels what the lizard feels 1 : 1

So if Kai knows what if feels to be held up close against X and hugged and have big hands gently holding him while X talks in the softest voice while he’s all alone? That’s for him to know and X to never find out.

And Kai is just happy that his familiar can wrap around X and he can feel it too

I like to think it’s not really obvious how much a witch synchronizes with their familiar (because it if was people would just kill the familiar) but it’s why dealing with witches is so hard

Their familiars enhance their abilities and defend the witches who normally can’t feel the pain of their familiars (so they don’t care/worry about the familiars getting hurt).

But of course Kai and Era who care a bit too much (the standards here) about their familiars so they feel more connected and treat them more than just tools

I also think Kai would’ve done it in a desperate attempt to significantly bolster his magic power. The greater risk = greater power. And it works with the whole pushing himself to be the best

On the topic of magic and staves in general I got super into the idea of most people casting magic in the OS universe needing to use some sort of object or implement to channel it properly, and only the most hardcore, dedicated, or gifted individuals being able to cast it raw.

Then I remembered there’s more characters who can cast magic straight from their fingertips than actually channel it in OS.

It’s more of a born with it quirk than anything

like atlas is a really good example of someone whose all tech

Atlas and Luna would be like artificers who make tools to channel magic through

Kai, Estelle, Era, Rune, and Ai.Mi all cast innately.

Everyone else either uses tech or doesn’t have any.

Ngl I think Kai would be one of those “I’m too old (old translates to cool in Kai speak here) for Halloween” types, but he knows Era gets into it every year and he doesn’t want to take her out of it so he forces himself into it.

Then of course X starts talking up his costume game and Kai naturally gets competitive, and as a result gets a good time out of it anyways.

TLDR Halloween to Kai is one of those things where you kinda bemoan the fact that you have to do it, even though once you’re in the thick of it you’re having a good time and always end thinking highly of it by the end.
