I was thinking about like. The contrast of how
Both Kai and Mako feel the pressure of "living up to the legacy" but they go about it in different ways like
For Kai, it is what he wants. Living up to the legacy is his greatest desire, dad or no dad. Corestrike is his calling, period
But Mako is a lot more... Conflicted. There's. A sense of doubt and loss about her when she says "it's what I have to do" whenever she mentions her temple and being a shrine maiden and what not; like she's giving up a part of herself to accommodate this, even if it is a part of her. The sacrifice is there

I think there's potential for a very poignant conversation between them over this.
Smth smth Kai going "you have to go after what you want most, not what other people expect of you. You owe it, not just to yourself but to everyone who believes in you." And Mako going all "but don't you play Corestrike for your family's sake, too? How is what I'm doing any different?" And like... Kai tells her "I play for myself and only myself, and you better get that thru your thick skull. And when you play your drums, I better hear you do the same, too."

Only real comment I'd have on it is that I would contest Kai plays solely for himself. Mostly in part because the last page of his own comic strip comes close to (though arguably doesn't quite) explicitly stating otherwise, through its mention that upholding family honor is a motive of his.

Granted that's a piece of motivation that can always change with time, which is where it gets interesting.

Because this conversation can go numerous different ways depending on what these characters have gone through.

We always assume Vyce and Octavia eventually make up in some capacity thanks to Mako, but what if she only exaggerates the wedge between them? How eager would she be to change her fate if she can't even get her friends back together?

If Kai's rejected his familial calling and wants to win for himself he'd absolutely encourage her to do the same for whatever her ambition is, but what if something happened that moved his character in the other direction?

Now you get a conversation where Kai is trying to convince Mako that what her family wants of her is important, and that if she can't find a common ground between the two lives she wants to live, she should pick that obligation.

Idea here is that if Mako can't help Vyce and Octavia make up, the consequences potentially involve losing one or both of them as friends. How eager would she be to follow her dreams of travelling the world as a musician if she can't do that with her two closest friends? Octavia and Vyce are likely the two that inspired her to have that dream to begin with. It would hold a lot less weight for her without them.

She got grounded for a decade because she put others before herself, and without her friends to be a part of her dream I bet she'd value serving her family before her own ambitions.
