I find him more compelling than some of the other characters because he's a good mix of a basic character type deconstruction and also more relatable than some of the more outlandish characters in the roster bc he has more "realistic" problems than let's say, Juno
Like yeah he seems p basic on the surface but he acts as a foil to Juliette, who is by all accounts the "main" character in-story. Like they both have the ambition and drive but she is an up and coming athlete while he's a seasoned pro. She may be more humble and energetic but it's insinuated that Kai's love for the game is real but he lost his passion after being top of the game for so long that there's no challenge any more and its making him sort of languish. There's a level of truth to his egotistical persona but it comes out of an inherent need to be liked because he isn't getting that care from his home life, while Jules is not as accomplished but has the loving family in her grandparent(s?)
he also more obviously acts as a foil to Estelle, who is the "talented" player in corestrike. He wasn't the og champ in the roster. She was. He was overly cocky during his debut and he lost, which shattered his worldview. But instead of going into the "this is unacceptable/woe is me" mentality he re-adjusted and got a new team better equipped to take her down and ultimately succeeded. Meanwhile Estelle completely broke apart after her apparent singular loss (which is another compelling character point tbh but not Kai-specific) and she quit corestrike right after which kind of suggests she has the more natural talent but not as intense determination and while Kai is undoubtedly privileged (rich, famous family whose careers are in the same sport) he is also incredibly hardworking at what he does and I think that aspect of his character is usually ignored or reversed. He is not riding on his talent, he does his best to work with it to achieve his dreams and that's very admirable
he's also very messy emotionally and doesn't have everything together and for fictional characters sometimes it's really fun to watch LOL like he doesn't know how to meaningfully connect with others and is fairly harsh towards his teammates when they don't do what he wants on the field but it comes from a place of his own high standards on himself and a fear of letting his family down and ultimately being worthless, which sometimes contrasts against his growing need to be challenged and I find it compelling

On the contrary, Kai's abilities literally are "Go fast and shoot balls". The fact that he's able to stay at the top/near it means he isn't depending on his abilities to carry his skill, but rather is depending on his skill to carry his lackluster abilities
