I just thought of something. Aimi has no prior experience with human needs, which has already been established. Even if Ai.Mi explained thoroughly, I don't think he'd truly understand the ramifications of such a past. The only thing he would really care about is the person he's spending time with now and who's actually physically standing in front of him, not someone who she said she was or others might say she was. :3

I think Zentaro's awkwardness sources from having no real idea how things work in the city. For example, if it was a date where they went out to eat somewhere, I think his awkwardness would come from not understanding how exactly ordering food goes and stuff. Not because it's a date with Ai.Mi. He'd probably already be comfortable with her and not have much of a problem with talking to her.

Ai.Mi would probably fit this context and be the answer you're looking for. Because she's probably seen from the internet how a date should be, probably even partially experienced one through the cameras and speakers of a phone on the table of some date. And with this knowledge, she tries to make it as date-like as possible. So she feels awkward because she's trying to fit herself to this date scenario, not just being herself and having fun with Zentaro during a date.

Lot of cool questions and discussions in my absence! I’ll tap in on one extremely belatedly because I actually have a contradictory opinion, and that’s always fun.

Way back on the shopping date question, I think Ai.Mi would actually be more into it. I’d bet for Ai.Mi the concept of owning something that’s actually “hers” is a big deal. For so long she was a computer program designed to help others, and showed up in the real world with no possessions bar the clothes on her back and the knowledge in her head. To be able to point to something and say “this is mine.” is yet another new thing for her, and I think it’s one of those things she would quickly get very attached to.

As contrast I think Zentaro would develop a very money-conscious lifestyle from living on the road before he reached Ahten. Even if he ever wound up with a lot of money I’d bet he’d be cautious about spending it. Both because if it’s not his he’d be thinking about who it really belongs to, and because he’s just accustomed to spending so little. If you’ve talked with someone who lived through The Great Depression you’ll know what I mean when saying that the “poverty breeds frugality” idea sticks with you for a lifetime.

A big arcade methinks. I bet Finii would take em along to show all the games she’s really good at only for Zentaro to get super into Skee-Ball or something, because it’s a physical game he understands and quickly gets good at.

Subsequently Ai.Mi would jump in on the action wanting to beat him at it, because she’s competitive like that, and Finii mourns the fact that they happened to like one of the few games she’s genuinely bad at.

(I have no logic to back up why I think Finii is bad at Skee-Ball other than plot convenience and noodle arms)

Them giving gifts based off what they like makes a lot of sense, and is really cute! What makes me personally shy away from that is early on in their time together do they even know what the other likes all that well? I’d expect at the start they’d have to wing it a bit.

Though that’s all subject to the question of “How long since they met was it before they started giving gifts to each other?”

And then when he gives it to her she's flustered and surprised that he got her something so thoughtfully, as it required noticing things about her that no one ever did. Of course, Zen having spoken to a grand total of two people for the vast majority of his life, would completely miss her reaction, and the significance of the gift as a whole, leaving the interaction not realizing a thing about either of their feelings.

I'd agree on that one as a whole. I do think there's aspects to both that I like regardless though.

Like the appeal of Ai.Mi being taller to an extent is that she's the one trying for the spotlight, it makes her look like the character with a physically greater presence, which falls in line with their respective identities. On the other hand Zentaro being taller is fun precisely because it inverts that.

It's definitely more an appearances thing than a narrative thing though, and I think Ai.Mi being the taller one is neat in this case.

With that being said my thoughts always jumped to "what would the characters think about the height dynamic?" Which I would ask, except I'm pretty sure I already have at least once before.

Idk if a random scenario that I had while laying in bed and being bored counts as a headcanon, but:

situation: Zen and Finii: chilling, waiting for aimi to watch a movie because she said, that she‘d bring some snacks.

After a while, when they were already worried that something had happened, Nao comes in and tells them that Aimi got kidnapped by her developers in order to experiment on her. As soon as she said that, Zen has already grabbed his sword and Mask and has left the room. He arrives at the location where they hold aimi captive, which is kinda like a backyard behind the HQ with one prison celll for Aimi. Then Zentaro makes his way past the handful of guards with sekiro style stealth and makes his way to Aimis cell. He breaks her out and they run outta there. Nao is waiting for them outside and Aimi has an immediate sense of distrust for Nao but she explains that she just wanted to help her because she‘s trying to view her more as a human than a program.
I think that‘d make a neat anime episode.

It‘s either that or the headcanon, that they bought an apartment together which was initally so that they could share the rent but now they snuggle up together in the late evening and watch movies

Ai.Mi's is probably Rune, he's the striker I'd say she's most positive towards in general with her interactions bar Zentaro. I'm not super great at writing Rune, so I haven't thought on what I'd consider their dynamic to be like, but I imagine they have a good time.

For Zentaro I think I'll run a bit of an oddball pick here and go with Drek'ar. Zentaro's been taught to fight since he was a kid, and Drek'ar has been trained to be nothing more than a solider. I imagine Zentaro would admire Drek'ar's dedication and martial prowess whilst Drek would act as a welcome mentor figure for our favorite half-Oni.

Zen's parents taught him how to fight, but Drek'ar has seen battlefields set across the stars. There's no doubt countless lessons to be taught by that experience.

I think some of it is bravado on her part. I think half of it is Zentaro wearing his emotions on his sleeve a little with her once they get to know eachother, but he’s also got a bit of stoicism in him.

They both do really. They’re both the “I’m fine.” (Definitely not fine) type for different reasons. Ai.Mi for not wanting to be perceived as weak, and Zentaro for not wanting to be a burden on others when he wants to use his skills to help and protect people.
