uhm. lemme doctor all over it from my fledgling knowledge of genetics

so things like skin colour are dependent on the quantity of skin pigment you have (obviously) but what determines how much pigment you got?

there's a lot of genes in there but the segment I'm aware of from premed days is a combination of 3 loci (which house 6 alleles) and that basically means you can have a total of 6 indiividual units controlling the degree of melanin produced

uhhh so what happens is that if you have 6 alleles promoting melanin production, you'll have darker skin naturally

and if it's the other way around, pale skin

and the number and balance of that determines the final degree of melanin production and thus, your skin colour

all this plus how much sun you're exposed to cuz htat also promotes melanin produciton and stuff but that's besides the point here

anyways the conclusion i'd come up with would be smth like the following:

if there's 3 alleles promoting Red skin, and 3 promoting Blue skin, there's a chance it would produce both red and blue pigments and that should give us Purple skin

but if it's any other way around, the skin colour will go further towards that direction (say, 5 genes blue and 1 gene red would give us much closer to red than blue)

and all of this is assuming that these genes do not show dominance at all

(i.e. are co dominant)

there's another possibility but that would only be possible either in a genetic disorder where some cells are either unable to produce pigment and thus appear as patches of either human skin color or albino oni skin, whichever that colour is

and the other is the mechanism behind tortoiseshell cats but veritassium took 40 minutes to explain that and i'm getting tired lmao
