for context, i did japanese at the start of high school for 2 years and learnt a lot, but stopped learning for a few years and then started this MIA method for like few months before i stopped. at that time i think i did around 500 cards of kaishi 1.5k, half of which were words i already knew pretty well. i had to increase daily card review way above my limit because i knew so many of the words but would in turn have a lot of cards to review the next day

now that i am coming back to learn japanese again, should i slog through the first 500 cards again or should i go through the list of cards and delete the ones that i am pretty confident in. i wanna do 10 cards a day and dont wanna increase it so am worried itll be a really slow start.

Definitely delete/suspend words you are confident in. Reviewing stuff you already know is an easy loop to get stuck in when you come back to Japanese from a break. So you have the right idea to go ahead and delete those cards TUp

In terms of how to actually do this, what I find easiest is just set your X new words per day that you want to do, and repeat Anki like normal, but whenever you come across a word you know immediately, just suspend it (it won’t take up one of your daily new cards “slots” if you suspend it without grading it).

This saves you the effort of having to look over the whole list to decide what gets suspended or not

Also since it sounds like you haven’t been doing Anki in a while, a few other notes.

  1. make sure you have fsrs turned on. We suggest a target retention of 85% as a baseline.

  2. keep in mind that Anki can take up to 2 weeks for your review load to stabilize. So don’t rush to do “extra” cards in the b beginning when things feel too quick, you’ll end up with a huge pile of reviews
