There's this new feature on YouTube that gives a summary of a video do you think its a good idea to read this before starting the video.

Second question, does anyone know any good caption app to use. Currently using asb player but I'm often times not finding captions for Japanese and the auto generated ones seem to be mistiming the captions.

Using japanese subtitles is perfectly fine, but do be aware that they are often wrong, and as a stage 1 it may be difficult to follow or notice the errors

I haven't looked in depth into what kind of videos these channels have, but here's some more to try

Miku has less input and more grammar teaching videos with dual language subs, but she also does conversations and has a podcast

If you haven't checked out #1023440478475141180 You can try checking that thread too. Mostly people post shows and dramas that are easier, but sometimes they also post learning channels

one of my favourite channels as a beginner was Daily Japanese with Naoko (you might’ve already watched her vids as she’s listed at that wiki link). she speaks slowly and either has physical objects or images pop up in her videos to make them more comprehensible

I mainly do vlogs because I watched the beginner content that does things slow like comprehensible Japanese

you should definitely check out ‘Japanese with Shun’ then. he has HEAPS of vlog videos and is another personal favourite of mine. he speaks clearly, but at a faster pace than channels targeted for absolute beginners. he also adds the approximate N_ level in the video titles, to give an idea of the level of vocab and grammar used

honestly it's just part of the process to not understand everything. as long as you're:

  • engaged with the content
  • noticing words you've learnt or heard before

then imo that's all you need to make great progress TUPNeko

as for the original question, I don't see why not

#

I use video summaries extensively and the feature has gone a long way

not sure how much it'd help with ja specifically but I guess you could use it to decide if things are worth watching
