Probably best for late beginner but MKs videos are basically audio description. He describes everything to the point where you could just listen to it and know almost exactly what's going on. If you like Nintendo, Pokemon or Minecraft videos this is your guy.

Toradora! and the above-mentioned Teasing Master Takagi-san have been great to get me in the habit of daily immersion. Toradora! doesn't have any convenient japanese subs for 3-channel from what I've found, but it does have a lot of visual context, and the plot is basic enough that the synopsis can usually be enough to point me in the right direction, even with only a few words
Since a lot of the juicier plot points are lost on me, they should in theory be relatively engaging to rewatch later once I have bigger vocabulary too, which makes me think they're well suited for a completely beginner

I've been watching hajime no ippo with Migaku player and playing fable anniversary with game2text because I like the mining setup and I remember a lot of the dialogue from both

Yeah. Fable anniversity half the words are just English written in Katakana anyway (which I need to practice because I hate Katakana). Hajime no ippo I think the language is quite straight forward for most of it, and I think Ippo speaks quite normal for a main character so it's close to actual speech (he speaks quite polite)
But it could just seem subjectively easier to me because I know the show very well

pretty cure is a great franchise to jump start comprehension. 20 years and over 900 (and counting) episodes, a good mix of SOL content with action/plot, and a new series each year, letting you pick whichever ones look interesting to you. being a longrunning kids show, the language is very accessible while covering a solid amount of breadth. my personal favorites are go princess and heartcatch:

I personally have english subtitles on because it's not fun to watch something if you don't understand a lot of what is being said; besides, to me, immersion is just about acclimatizing my ears to the language so that I'm able to pick out words in a sentence easier instead of everything sounding like complete & utter gibberish.
anyway, my recommendations for beginner things to watch would be anything in the slice of life genre; especially the iyashikei genre, but be mindful that anime set in rural places might use dialect variations for the regions they are set in.

well, there's a lot more I'd recommend, but I think these ones are a nice start. aside, from anime, I would also recommend watching interviews with japanese people on youtube - there's lots of different channels to choose from. or maybe even consider listening to music or podcasts, etc.

I'm about halfway through the 1k Deck and can already follow the overall plot of this with some lookups here and there. Its also great if you are bored of standard Slice of Life shows. It still has mostly standard SoL vocabulary but has some elements in the direction of mystery/horror.

For what it's worth, I tried watching Teasing Master Takagi-san and felt like I understood practically nothing (a lot of it is exasperated internal monologue). I watched Polar Bear Cafe simultaneously and understood it without issue. Takagi-san ranks a 1/10 difficulty on jpdb, the latter a 5/10...
My recommendation: ignore ease rankings and watch what you want!

Agreed, what’s most important is your enjoyment which equates, at the end of the line, to your level of concentration on the narrative being passed on.
Again, the key is in trying to understand the message, and the focus needed to do that, inevitably comes down to your enjoyment

Yeah I find takagi san to be pretty difficult as well. Maybe it ranks low because the vocabulary is simple but I feel like the grammar is not that basic
So far the easiest show for me to understand has been my clueless first friend

I found something really useful
this is actually the first show that I've watched fully in japanese with japanese subtitles, but I highly recommend it because it uses simple langauge, talks slowly, and a great mix of casual and polite speech.
It's a japanese romance drama that follows a woman and a deaf man that get into a relationship.
its perfect, because the langauge barrier with her having to use sign language or talk with him without a phone means that she learns the basic words in japanese
I see kanji all the time that I've learned very recently and I'd suggest you check it out (totally free btw)

JPDB was linked at the beginning of the thread for checking difficulty level, but Learn Natively is now the recommended source for checking relative difficulty. Make sure you make an account and rate the shows you watch, and add shows that aren't listed yet. The more people who make ratings, the more accurate they will be. Here's shows/movies with a rating at or under L22, which should be great for beginners. Also, don't be afraid to watch something harder if you find it interesting. 😊

If you like the Comprehensible Japanese YouTube channel linked above, there are many more channels like it linked here. While it's not a show to watch, I highly recommend the podcast Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners that's linked here as well, for after you've gotten partially though a beginner vocab deck. IMO it's one of the best sources of audio/passive input for beginners other than the audio of shows you've already watched.

Honestly this movie is about as comprehensible/easy as it gets besides being in Kansai/Hiroshima dialect. Very sad movie about a elementary school girl with a developmental disorder so might be a tough watch for some. Also it is quite slow paced so avoid if you don't have the attention span for it.
