Here, does the tea kettle sound only happen when you play games
coil-whine
@terse stirrup respond here
I’ve not had enough time to test it but when it was happening in my first vid, the screen was asleep but a game was running in the back
Sorry didn’t notice the thread
its ok
Okay, so.
When you first boot your computer, what kind of sounds does it make
That second video noise (not the whining) stopped when I just closed my game
The fans just ramp up then quiet down when booted
ok that's normal
all computers ramp the fans cuz the CPU gets hella hot in the beginning loading everything at once
Ah okay
How do I check this?
like
Nothing's starting up anymore
all your apps in startup are open
but ur doing nothing
is it making any sound
Nope, they ramp up when I do little things like open chrome but idk if that’s normal
But everything sounds normal, nothing Out of the ordinary just regular fan noise
coil whine can't go away but you can reduce it
by limiting your FPS, undervolting, etc.
Ok thanks
There’s no whining or anything happening right now
no clicking sounds either?
Nope
Just case fan noise
mk
Can send a vid if that’s any help
That’s just idle doing nothing
Quite quiet
Think the popping sounds were just my hands aha
ok
now
boot up a game
preferably something thats pretty intense
ideally a GPU-intensive game
I have Forza horizon 5 and ark survival evolved downloaded rn
Just the fans ramping up during load up
no other sounds?
dats coil whine
100%
coil whine
no other thing to it
sounds exactly like GPU whine lol
So coil whine can be silent if not under stress
it only makes the sound when its stressed
tbh it could maybe be the PSU as well
does it sound louder near the GPU or the PSU?
like put your ear next to gpu, then ear next to the PSU exhaust
Just figured out, it my game stutters when the whine stutters
heres an example of gpu whine
That's 3 MSI cards and 2 Asus, and all with the same coil whine.
One last thing to try is yet more PSUs. I did try others, but they had Seasonic parts in them or were made by them, so I am wondering if that is a connection.
Tomorrow I will try two others that are made by other OEMs just to see if Seasonic parts are to blame.
what retailer did you order the 6950XT from
amazon?
Scan UK
how many days do you have for a replacement
Presuming I have 30 days, probably 15-18 days
and also what PSU do you have
you have afew options you can try if u dont want to get a replacement
try changing your PSU or undervolt your GPU
coil whine is a very common issue
it doesnt affect your GPU at all, its just annoying
But it does seem to be effecting it though because when the whine stutters, so did my game
And I have an 850w Nzxt psu not sure on the actual model name
Anyways, here's your options since it's GPU coil whine.
- Get a replacement and hope for the best.
- Change your PSU, it could be the PSU.
- Undervolt your GPU, and limit your frames more in game.
Since it’s stuttering, could this point towards the PSU? As you said the whine doesn’t effect the card but seems strange to me that when the whine stops for the split second, so does my game
it's either your GPU or PSU.
No other options
more likely the GPU, but the PSU gives it the juice which causes the whine
so a different PSU could eliminate the sound
I guess I could try PSU first? Would you suggest I send for replacement from Scan or order a PSU off Amazon since they have easier returns if it’s not the problem
Okay I’ll try that first. Is it usual for the whine to affect the game when it stutters? That’s what’s baffling me atm
stuttering could just be happen at same time as whine problem
But like when you listen to the video, how you can hear the whine stopping and starting (stutters in the whine), when it stops, that’s when the game stuttering happens. Like it’s a direct correlation to the game stuttering and whine stuttering
Sorry if I’m being a pain
the PSU is giving the GPU power
the GPU gives video to the game
coil whine isnt a constant sound
it can be stuttery as well
when youre playing in game without any loading screens, does it still make the sound
Yeah it does. Also what I’m trying to say with the stuttering is it directly correlates to the game stuttering. They happen at the exact same time. I’m not sure if I’m explaining that well enough
thats just how it is
coil whine goes in conjunction with game performance
its not uncommon
Ah right it’s just because earlier you said it doesn’t affect anything so just confused.
Are both of the different sounds both GPU whine because if you can remember from my videos, one what like a kettle and the other one isn’t as loud and more clicky
It was the “other one” that I was hearing in the game and that was stuttering the game in sync with the whine. I didn’t hear the kettle type one when in the game
Oh :/
Oh that last video I was on about the strange display, was meant to post it in the main build help bit
Also, tried undervolting like suggested earlier and it’s just causing crashes in games
You have to find the sweet spot of stability and speed. Can take some time but did a lot for my card since heat was an issue
Lock the curve at a voltage, play a bit, if it doesn't have issues, you can lower it some etc.
I RMA'd it and they said there is no fault at all. They said they stress tested it over 10 hours and no sign of unusual noise. So now I am even more confused lmao
Could be caused by the PSU then
