Atzur and June were having a chat about encoding video files in AV1 format with NVENC. Atzur shared some Python scripts for calculating the bitrate of encoded data, but the quality metrics for AV1 encoded files were perplexing. It seemed that the quality of AV1-encoded files was lower than that of h.264 files, even when the bitrate for the AV1 files was higher.

June tested the preset p7 with qp value of 9, and the output had a mean quality of around 89.46, which was much lower than the corresponding quality of h.264. Atzur speculated that the faster presets for AV1 might not incorporate all of its features. They discussed running the tests again with lower presets to see if they would obtain different results. Atzur agreed to consult with the AV1 community on Discord to verify their findings.

It seems that the issue might be specific to NVENC's implementation of AV1. Atzur advised June to run further tests to determine how the outputs of other QPs would compare.
