Need some input from the Hierarchy Boffins. I understand the basic principles but as I grow my small rural town into more of a densely populated large town/small city, I have been upgrading or changing some road uses. The main arterial I have running into my city from the highways has been upgraded to a 4 lane two way highway… is this the wrong type if road for a main arterial or is it acceptable?

For a small town a highway running through it is fine but on a bigger city there might be a highway bypass
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I am really enjoying the slow gradual evolution of the city… I am still on my first build from launch with only 11k pop 🙈😁
So the road I am referring to was a two lane highway national road type vibe…. But as I was upgrading some infrastructure I went for a 4 lane two way highway instead of 4 lane medium road as I wanted to limit pedestrian access and increase speed…. Was just wondering how common that is in North America ( 4 lane two way highway) cutting though small/medium towns with at grade crossings?
This is quite common in my state
Really, cool, whereabouts and I will have a fly about google earth for some inspo?
The Paciic coast highway (1) has a lot of examples of going through cities
I have actually drove a lot of that road on vacation 😄🙈 (I am from UK)
Will never forgot the roads in LA. Jesus! 😁
Our drivers are terrible
Ok I am going to add some photos see if I can tempt more people in to comment and give my their views.....
Road I am wanting advice on is highlighted in red...
So its a road that intersects from the trumpet and T interchanges from the maps main interstate highway...
It started out as a simple 2 lane highway national road and was the first road I built my starter town from......
As the small town has grown... this road started to break down with traffic.... So I started to mess about with upgrades.... And I am trying to use the principles of road Hierarchy that guys like CCP talk about as prior to CS2 I had never even heard or thought of any this real life planning in city builders... back in the Sim city days I just draw roads everywhere and anywhere lol
First question I have for people.... Am I correct in considering this road as an arterial?
I first tried to upgrade it to a 4 lane 2 way medium road but it performed terribly with traffic, just as bad as the 2 lane 2 way highway....
But since changing it to a 4 lane two way highway... and replacing the main intersection in the middle with a roundabout.... it actually works pretty good with minimal jams....
Although its some laugh watching the sims play chicken trying to cross the highway hahaha (I will build them some elevated walk ways dont worry)
Anyone have any advice or suggestions?...... As stated above my play style is to let it grow slow and natural so I expect it to be quite a while more before I have elevated highways or interchanges in the middle of the city.....
But in the mean time how can I improve the network and hierarchy, should I start using some slip lanes etc?
The area grided out with dirt roads use to be agricultural land which is now being redeveloped and will be my next area to build if that helps
I upgraded my 4 lane 2 way highway to a 2 lane 1 way highway and it solved most of the traffic
On most of the intersections there wasn’t much traffic
On the more busy intersections having a light would work
Slip lanes do hell but make sure you block certain turns or else chaos insues
Interesting, can I ask did you do at grade intersections on the 1 way and what did they look like?
It is looking fine right now. Do you have some pictures of it being crowded?
Ideally when the area is more populated like in this picture, I would upgrade the road to a regular medium road instead of a 4-way highway to allow for crossings.
Thanks for the reply… yeah so I tried the 4 way medium and it just crumbled during rush hour with all the pedestrian traffic…. The highway road defo minimises that as they end up having to play chicken and try a mad dash across the road 😁
I like the highway roads due to the speed as it reminds me of like dual carriageway roads we have here in the Uk used everywhere… I think I would probably just look for tips to optimise the 4 lane highways ability to deposit and collect traffic on to those main collectors as once I build out that old farm top right its really gonna cut through the heart of two big halves
Ah gotcha. Maybe pedestrian bridges are a solution? Do you have some pictures from above?
Yeah defo gonna build some pedestrian walk ways…. Just booting up now… what angle pics exactly, do you mean the whole build?
Top-down/2D, so that it is easier to see the layout.
Lol dunno
I am starting to think that Its wrong to keep forcing the traffic into the centre, maybe I need to divert the main arterial to the top of that pic and use a service interchange
Think cos I am funneling right into the heart its causing me grief
Bump on this…. I know Teun has been kind enough to say he is coming back with a detailed response but anyone please feel free to chime in. I am really struggling on what direction to take this build next…. Am starting to think that maybe the little organic town I have grown to this size is maybe just reached its right size and maybe I should just establish a new town elsewhere on the map…. That central arterial in the middle of the town is really bugging me though regardless 😁 does not feel right
Sorry for replying this late; my Uni day turned out to be longer than expected. I think the problem is indeed very clear on the picture. To fix this I think there is one 'best' solution, being making some 'real' interchanges. Some options could be the Trumpet, three leg directional or diverging diamond interchanges like in the image below (Picture 1). They do take some space in the town though. Therefore, I would first try to get more flow through the current interchanges. Maybe you can try to remove the roundabout and have slip lanes like I have in my example (Pictures 2 & 3). Make sure to have the restricted left and right turns set-up properly.
Evening mate, thanks for your time. Yeah I had been thinking about using an intersection with slips instead of the roundabout because something just felt off with it….. do you think I need to better define the collectors running from the arterial into the town?
Right now there is only really one collector (4 lane 2 way) shown in red running from the arterial
And I feel like it has too many local roads connected to it
Should I minimise the amount of local road connections to it?
And then maybe add a loop of collectors….
Like that
I feel because I grew it organically from a small town there is not great road hierarchy
Yeah, I would take this approach
And remove this intersection (so no red connection to that arterial).
Great…. Will report back with results when done cheers
@worn sequoia Just wanted to thank you so much for your input.... It looks sooo much better with intersection with slips......
I am really happy with the way it turned out and feels realistic as a small American town
Ah that explains the resolution
Great choice
Thanks, yeah the game looks so good on the ultrawide, really immersive.... Apart from when potato mode kicks in
Hahahaha right
