I'm working on a Detroit map where Judge Augustus Woodward's plan was adopted and the city has a triangular grid of 120-foot roads, connected by 60-foot roads, all overlaid with a rectangular grid of 200-foot Grand Avenues that run E-W and N-S.

For the 60-foot roads, I'm using two-lane roads with parking and sidewalks. For the 120-foot roads, I'm using six-lane roads with a median, parking and sidewalks.

But what in the world is a 200-foot road? I've read everything I can find about his plan, and it just says "200-foot Grand Avenues". An eight-lane road with street parking, wide sidewalks and two-way tram tracks in the median is still only about 160 feet.

Anything bigger than that is a freeway, and no one wants freeways running in a grid through your city.

So I'm open to suggestions as to how to simulate this, keeping in mind this was a plan developed in 1807.

Why not just go ahead and substitute the 200ft street with the 160ft one?

Did I mention the 1,000-foot radius roundabouts with 12 roads coming into them? 😂

"Stroad" is a term created by Strong Towns to describe a street that functions as not a street *or* a road, but both.

Strong Towns describes a street as "a place where people interact with businesses and residences, and where wealth is produced" while a road as "a high-speed route between productive places." A stroad is a mixture of the two and are "dangerous, expensive, and ineffective."
Strong Towns has a graphic (see below) on how to turn a stroad into either a street or a road. This is further discussed in this article about removing a stroad.

For further information you can visit the Strong Towns website, and find the specific stroad article, here.
‘Not Just Bikes’ has produced a number of great videos on various urban planning topics, including a particularly good video on Stroads, discussing not just problems but also their solutions in a variety of different places.
