The ancient city.
What if the ancient builders found it easier to get diamonds and iron the farther down, so they build the ancient city, where miners would mine?

After the end and nether portals, what if the portal statue in the middle of thr city was to a new dimension, the skulk dimension? A great source of xp and to get enchantments quickly. Altho, a very tough dimension.

However, one day, skulk came from the portal to the ancient city, with maybe a shrieker. One ancient builder killed a mob near the portal in the skulk dimension?

In thr over world, the builders were stunned at this. Upon close look, a mob spawned. The warden, killing everyone and breaking the portal in the process. However, some ancient builders were minding and came home with a nasty surprise, waiting for them. And that's when the deep dark began to grow and expand.

Near the portal in base game is sand soil on fire. We know that heat and a hard substance is required for a portal.

Now, my theory does have its downfalls. For example, how can skulk go from one dimension to another without the portal or how he builders get reinforced deep slate?
I not sure. But this is something to think about. The conditions for a portal are right.

How could the sculk come to the Overworld with a shrieker if there are no shriekers in the Overworld?

sculk is found naturally in the overworld under mountains

the city was made inside the skulk

Sure thing! Why don't you give us every possible point of evidence that sculk isn't from the Overworld without mentioning possible leaks or making assumptions about sculk's nature or origin.
The only information you can use about sculk to fully certify its otherworldly (or overworldly) nature is that sculk is some form of living moss or fungus-like thing that grows using soul power and can grow more complex forms of itself (sensors and shriekers) along with a construct to defend itself from intruders (the Warden) that simultaneously acts as its primary method of reproduction by dropping a sculk catalyst on death. It generates deep under mountains and may include an ancient city, which appears to have been built specifically with the sculk in mind due to the wool built into the structures, integration of sculk sensors into the central structure, the presence of the Swift Sneak enchantment (very useful for sculk-related shenanigans), and the presence of many sculk-related items, including sculk itself, echo shards, and the ward and silence armour trims, which are either just the warden or have sculk on them.

@unborn wagon

  1. Sculk does not resemble any of the life in the overworld. Plants, animals, and fungus share major differences with sculk. Now this is not fully unexpected given how life in caves adapt to its environment, but sculk seems to share no descendant lineage to any overworld genera, either implying abiogenesis occured independently underground or sculk is otherworldly.

  2. Sculks adaptation and behavior is odd for the environment it inhabits. Sculk grows through the ingestion of soul energy and experience from living things that encountered it and were subsequently killed by it. This sort of adaptation would be of a massive benefit to areas that are rich in passive life, allowing rapid expansion and domination in environments it would take root. Those soul and experience-rich environments are found exclusively on the surface of the world. Why would a fungus that adapted to feed off of soul energy inhabit one of the most devoid areas for life?

Leaks only further provide evidence for this argument.

yeah
you're right
it's from the void

I came to that conclusion upon further reflection

my theory is that souls cant pass threw bedrock so when they sent to the bottom of the world they got stuck, condensed and made the skulk. this explains why they are only found under mountains. its because there is so much stone they get lost and cant leave. the nether supports this because souls cant leave because of the roof and floor, so they condense into the soul sand valleys.

the city was made IN the skulk for research and to power there portal
