The ghast are nether creatures, native to the soul sand valleys, and with a life-cycle than can be summarized in three stages.

The first one are the babys, after being born, ghasts are small, incredibly fragile creatures, that can't fly very high and on top of that, they have to fend for themselves in a hostile environment, to achieve this, ghasts are born with the ability of become completely invisible, something incredibly useful, however, after some time, their own bodies betray them, and as the system that will allow them to shoot powerful fireballs starts developing, baby ghasts will sometimes shoot by accident small fireballs, making them visible again for a few moments, and giving away their position to hostile creatures, only 60% of baby ghasts survive due to this.

The second one are the juveniles, once ghasts reach a certain size, they lost their ability to become invisible, but now they can shoot more powerful fireballs, and can shoot them at will, juvenile ghasts aren't big enough yet to not be a target for predators, and will use their fireballs to defend themselves, they can now fly to higher altitudes, but can't reach the top of the nether yet, juveniles are more aggresive that babys and adults, and will sometimes shoot other creatures just for being too close, they don't like each other very much. This is the shortest stage of a ghast's life

Finally, there are the adults, too big and powerful to have any predators, before humans and lagers reached the nether, the only danger they have to face was debris ocasionally falling from the ceiling, they aren't naturally aggresive towards other creatures, but can become aggresive if they see these creatures harming others ghasts, being that the reason for the hostily that most ghasts un their adulthood have towards humans.

I can remember there being smaller ghasts in MCD

Bigger then a baby ghast, but smaller then an adult one

They are probably adult ghasts that look like that because gameplay

#

Ghast are mini-bosses, they can't be as big as they are in Vanilla

There’s the achievement, “Uneasy Alliance,” where you have to, “Rescue a Ghast from the Nether, bring it safely home to the Overworld... and then kill it."

Notice the key word: Home

What does that mean? Are Ghasts native to the overworld?

I decided to ask a different question: What are the limits of the overworld? I immediately looked to the stars, and it hit me. Space.

It makes perfect sense! Ghasts are aliens!

So why do they sound like babies? It’s simple. Sound doesn’t exist in space, so they have had no capability to communicate vocally. However, they have clearly been in the diegetic world for long enough to develop basic vocal sounds such as whines, moans, and screams.

Somehow, Ghasts have been trapped in the Nether for hundreds of years. How they got there is a mere mystery, but it is clear that they desire to return “Home”, which is the overworld. Their longing for their return explains why they cry all the time and why they drop tears. The idea that the ghast is a machine does not explain the Ghast Tear unless of course the tear is actually some form of oil or fuel that works extraordinarily well in brewery.

We simply don’t know enough about the Ghast to draw a certain conclusion, but I theorize they’re from an unreachable region of the overworld, perhaps a region in the sky that exists between the overworld and the End; Space.

Wow... That is good...
Massive stretch but that's a good theory
